I'm hoping this selection is a horses for courses decision. Obvious one of Carltons greatest strengths is its run off half back from Saad and its other is its contested work with Cripps. I'm guessing Mansell is in to nullify Saad and Graham is in to tag Cripps. If this is the case, then I can see the logic.

It might also prove a great motivator for Cumberland to up his pressure game at VFL level and come back into the team an even more rounded player.

Fingers crossed 🤞

Mansell deserves spot he turned the game for us in the vfl game against casey he was moved to the forward line at 3rd quarter

His pressure was elite he chased and harrased was in everything we were 25 points down ....has to start forward

Was walking home from the G today after work and saw Cumbo walking alone at around 6.30pm, i said good luck tomorrow Cumbo not knowing the team news...gave me absolute donuts, later saw he wasn't named haha...he did look a little sore and sorry i thought

I miss the 70s.
Back then Cumbo would have spat it at missing selection, walked out and been lining up for the Blues or South Melbourne next week, allowing us top open up a spot for some half forward from Oakleigh or Geelong West to play in the Twos.

Is there a logical explanation for Cumberland not being in the team? Day before the opening game of the season and we're already doing baffling s**t.
Not really

He needs to improve what he does when he doesnt have the ball and apply more pressure
His last game apart from missing the goals he really added no pressure and had a sh!t game

I think emphasis in our forward line including Dusty, Bolton and Cotch must be for Jack and Lynch to simply get the ball to the ground. The groundball get talent of those 3 alone should be the difference between the sides. I don't think Jack in his twilight and Lynch recovering from injury are going to be dominating contested marks inside forward 50 so we need to work to our strengths. Having said this we also don't want to continually bomb it in there as we did vs the Dee's.

It's essentially smart footy and if one thing stood out last season compared to the better sides it was our lack of footy smarts, literally way too many WTF moments, hopefully they worked on this during the off season.

Graham is actually a decent half forward because he works hard defensively and can not only hit the scoreboard but also lower the eyes and hit a lead. It also important to remember that this bloke helped our club advance to the grand final in 2019 with his shoulder hanging from its socket. Oh and there’s that near norm smith medal grand final performance to end a 37 year drought whilst tagging one of the form midfielders of the competition. He also gave me a thumbs driving to that game in his black pick-up truck, we locked eyes and it was magical and then I won 10k.

The fact that Cumbo isn't even an emergency is alarm bells.
Probably more an attitude/fitness thing I'd imagine.

I suspect he was given the Melbourne praccy to see if he could perform well enough in a more pressure oriented role and following that, it was felt Mansell could do better in that specific role - as he has in the VFL.

and youngster Jesse Motlop (calf) have also been selected

Mark him down for a lazy dozen goals and get on early for the Coleman/Brownlow/Norm, he'll be odds-on for the trifecta by Friday morning.

As history has demonstrated ad infinitum, the Carlton pundits are the shrewdest talent spotters of all and THEY HAVE SPOKEN.

When was the last time Short was played in his optimum position?
When was the last time Short had a good game that you can remember off the top of your head?

On Clarke, you say practice matches and training don't matter... That's ridiculous. We had no other barometer to go by over the pre-season.
This isn't even a matter of a Short vs Clarke type of scenario.
I just want players to be rewarded for their efforts over the pre-season.
The worst thing a club can do is default to "the old trusty players" because that's the best way to start behind the eight ball.
Clarke will probably play 10-12 games this year. This just isn't going to be one of them.

He's progressing nicely and looks to have a good future. I've likened him, as others have here to a young Craig McCrae. He's best 25 - 28 already. He looks hungry. He just needs to keep working hard, especially in the gym and on his defensive side. I think he will be the sub in this game.

All of that makes the melts that he's not selected in the 22 in this game seem a bit silly to me. Right now tho, Short is a far better player.

Cumberland melts are quite shocking. He was never gonna be a walk up start with Dusty back in, and the new midfield meaning Cotch and Shai are mostly forward. Pre season showed that. He'll get a chance soon enough and he'll be ready to go when he does.

Mansell is being picked to carry out a vital role, just as Castagna was, and many others over the journey.

It's not "picked your 22 most talented players regardless of team make up."

Would've thought after all our success that people would have understood that by now.
Nice post.
