I think we might be OK with our talls. In the ruck, we will have rookie David Fanning, who will share time with Cameron Cloke, Anthony Rocca and maybe Tristen Walker. It's hardly an intimidating line-up, but I think if we can get a good contest out of them, then it gives our midfield a chance.

Interesting to see Rawlings down back. Has he been playing there in the pre-season. I would've thought in the first game of the year, you would have him playing in the forward line.

Should be a good game.

I think the Pies will start as slight favorites but I really do like our chances providing we can get the forward line functioning.
We really need Darcy and Minson to dominate so our midfield has a better than even chance of coming out on top.

B: Gilbee Grant Bowden
HB: McMahon Harris Hahn
C: Giansiracusa West Eagleton
HF: R.Murphy Rawlings Koops
F: Smith Street Faulkner
R: Darcy Boyd Cooney
I: Minson Cross Ray Power
E: Birss Griffin Williams

Grants best game last year was on Barry Hall at FB. Given his poor return in the Wizard at FF, I'd try something else. This frees up Harris to play CHB. Bowden in the back line to take the third tall and plug gaps in the mould of Chad Cornes. Bowden is smart enough and big enough to do it. Just wasn't doing enough up forward. Gilbee, McMahon and Hahn pick themselves based on Wizard form.

Centre line is stock standard.

Rawlings slots in at CHF for a decent marking target. Street's game last week was enough to get a gig in front of Bandy who has done nothing all pre-season. Koops up forward to keep the opposition defenders honest. Smith and Faulkner pick themselves based on Wizard form. Murphy up forward because no one beats him one on one.

On the bench, tossing up between Williams and Power but Power just gets it. Wouldn't hurt for Williams to learn a bit and impose himself at the Bee's first.

 you think grant is quick enough to go with chris tarrant in round one?

Yes, we may begin as slight favourites.

I think your midfield will trouble ours as they are quicker. However, I've always thought it wasn't the quickness of your players, but how quick they can move the ball.

Grant will play him from in front. Grant will block his run, cut the angles, watch the ball coming in. Don't underestimate footy smarts.
Before the Hall game last year, most would've said Grant isn't strong enough to play Hall

Mick Martyn made a career out of full-back with no speed. So has Dustin Fletcher. Chad Cornes is under-sized but a premiership CHB. Jeff White was All Australian ruckman at 192cm.

Thornton at 192cm gave Bandy at 200cm a towelling. In theory, Bandy just needs to stick his arms up and outreach Thornton but Bandy did not take a single overhead.

I tend to agree. Unless there is a specific match-up that they think he really can contribute to then he is better playing full games for the Bee's.

I will have a rough crack at it.This is what I think the team should be with a bit of consideration given to where Eade has said he is likely to play guys.

FB: Gilbee Harris Hargrave

HB: Mcmahon Grant Boyd

C: Murphy West Birss

HF: Guido Bandy Bowden

FF:Robbins Rawlings Smith

RR: Darcy Cooney Cross

I/C:Eagleton,Minson,Ray,Hahn

What Eade will do with the talls is the most interesting question.I have Rawlings up forward because that is IMO his best position but I have a strong feeling that he will play down back on the third tall.Ideally you would have Jade at CHF and Grant at FF but Eade seems awfully keen on having one of them down back.

gilbee only played a few average games last year, and becasue he has played a couple of good practise matches this year, all of you guys have cracked a fat over him. against carlton only about 50% of his kicks hit his targets, and the ones that didn't hit the target, resulted in carlton goals more often than not.

matches played by him. Cross has the same, if not more of an impact as gilbee, by tagging the oppositions best midfielder week in week out.
Yeah you guys - stop cracking a fat over him

So far Dog Town is the closest with his round one team. But this is the team that will play in round one, or it will be very close at least.

Gilbee Harris Hargrave
McMahon Rawlings Murphy
Boyd West Giansiracusa
Smith Bandy Hahn
Robbins Grant Bowden
Darcy Cooney Cross
RAY MINSON EAGLETON GRIFFIN
Power Faulkner Koops Williams Birss

Queries on Robbins and Hargrave, could be replaced by Faulkner and Koops.

Its pretty close to what I would have put down, but I really believe that Cam Faulkner is a certainty for Round 1.

Be serious, Brad Murphy isn't up for selection in round 1 and Daniel Cross should be in the team. He thrashed Buckley last year and with his outstanding fitness levels will be able to close him down whilst gaining plenty of hard ball gets as he usually does. Cross can get the hard ball or do a hard tagging role which is very effective and could become his assignment for the whole year eg tagging Robert Harvey, N.Buckley, Kouta then if somebody else can definately handle the role free up Crossy to take the hard ball at will.

g'day people, ive noticed only afew of you have shane birss in your side.

i have him in my dream team and was wondering if in fact he will play much AFL this year? it sounds like he might be in and out of the side?

Due to an injury he is a little down with match fitness. When fit he is in the best 22 and if he can string together games like he did at the end of last season then he should be a good selection for you.

I am going to look at some possible match ups.

Tarrant = Harris or Hargrave
Rocca = Grant or Rawlings
Buckley = Cross
Licuria = Eagleton
Burns = Hahn (this would be a beauty)

I think most people have the team fairly close although I would be suprised if Robbins or Birss got a game and this is only due to a lack of match fitness re pre season injuries. Hargrave may have a question mark as well. Anyone know how he is progressing?

I have Birss as a certain starter in the best 22 despite a slightly interrupted pre-season.

Are the teams announced Wednesday or Thursday night this week? (Re Easter)

I think they allow us to name a squad of players rather than just a 22 on Thursday night however, I think we still have to finalise the team by Saturday.

Martyn being slow is a myth. He was a junior sprint champion. Jeff White is 195cm.

This is my team, not the team i think Eade will play.

B: Hargrave, Harris, McMahon
HB: Gilbee, Rawlings, Birss
C: Boyd, West, Giaan
HF: Eagleton, N/A, Smith
F: Faulkner, Grant, Bowden
R: Darcy, Hahn, Cooney
I: Minson, Cross, Griffen, Williams or Robbins (inj???)

* Koops or Bandy  i don't want to put either of them in but we need another tall.

My side:

FB: Gilbee Harris Hargrave

HB: Mcmahon Rawlings Murphy

C: Eagleton West Giansiracusa

HF: Cooney Bandy Bowden

FF: Faulkner Grant Smith

RR: Darcy Hahn Cross

I/C:Minson, Ray, Boyd, Griffen

Koops, Williams, Johnson to round out the 25 to be selected.

I would give Walsh a chance to show whether he is up to league footy. It is no sense bagging the guy without him ever getting a chance, and by all reports he presented well in the last intra-club.

FB: Gilbee Harris Hargrave

HB: Mcmahon Rawlings Murphy

C: Ray West Giansiracusa

HF: Walsh Bandy Faulkner

FF: Bowden Grant Smith

RR: Darcy Hahn Cooney

I/C:Minson, Eagleton, Boyd, Griffen

Thank god someone else has some idea. This is the same 22 that I picked with one very debatable selection, that of Robbins/Faulkner I just think Robbins will get over the line due to his experience.

This would be our first problem. You cant pick a guy on a few kicks in an intra club. Other clubs only pick players who kick the door down first, he has had 2 years at werribee and couldnt get a kick. This is a make or break season. If he gets a few 4 goal hauls early on i am all for him getting a game, but there is no point rewarding mediocrity.
