Its all good and well to debate who deserves to be in the team and who fits into what position on paper but the selection panel also have to take all the match ups into account too. Without considering who is playing on who it's pretty tough to figure out how the team will look.

Thanks as i live in Sydney and our news report was filled with Rugby League.
We got a pretty informative mag. in the Daily Telegraph, though. If you haven't seen it its worth a buy, not too long, but just a little summary on each team and a larger section on the Swans.

The newish guys that will get a run look like being Jack, Grundy, Moore, Barlow, Bird, and perhaps Brennan or even White. We'll have to wait and see.

Won't be White. I suspect the sixth "newish" guy he's referring to is Mattner judging by the latest fluff piece on the official website. Though Brennan might get a run too if Richards isn't fit enough (which I suspect he won't be).

roos has specified that mattner will be one of those new faces
i'd love to see white in
i think bird and jack are certainties, and if there's a doubt on richards grundy will probly play that other tall defender's role
barlow surely has to play
the bigger mystery is who'll miss
we know fosdike, crouch, everitt, schneider and dempster will be missing from the 22 that played last year's last game (although barlow played that game)
and if jack is in, bevan must be doubtful
moore comes in for schneider
bird would come in as mid (maybe for mcveigh or mathews)

is Mattner likely to fill Malceski's role as the quarterback or is he going to become a tagger and fill Dempster's role?

Mattner is a little small to be a quaterback. Seriously though, I do think Mattner will replace Malceski to some extent, which is unfortunate because the idea was to give Eski a run in the middle this year and still have his position covered. So we're back where we started!

The long-term injury means we have to use Mattner as a fill-in for Eski, instead of having two running HBs (Kennelly and Mattner) plus Malceski in the midfield.

I hope I got that right:eek:

if richards is unfit, surely grundy will get the role as another tall defender
much as i'd like to see grundy up forward, he seems to have continued to be played in defence, and i'd have him well ahead of brennan

Obviously Mattner will be one of the new faces. In terms of "newish" I meant youngsters. Mattner has played 98 games and has been around for a while. I'm looking forward to seeing how he fits into the team.

I would imagine he will. For Round 19 last year Barry played on Riewoldt and Richards played on Gehrig and both Saints forwards kicked a combined total of 3 goals so i hope Roos does the same thing come Saturday.

and koschitzke? :D

One less w*nker on the field.

I hope this fills it in a little. From Realfooty, dated march 11th;

Fraser Gehrig strained his calf but is likely to be back for the start of the season.

Nothing too serious I think.

Moore should take a walk up start into Schneiders place. His pre season form has warranted the opportunity.

Spot on.
Jack and Bird have also more than likely secured a spot for rd. 1 due to their pre season form making them along with Moore almost impossible to be overlooked.

In regards to the game I feel that with Maguire out and Hudghton underdone and likely to also miss we must get it in quickly to our key forwards. Otherwise players such as Gram and the Clarke brothers will be able to drop back into space and provide damaging rebound from our F50.

I've just seen on Fox Footy teams, Bird and Moore named as emergencies. McVeigh listed in team (Roosy you haven't let us down - unbelievable). What do those two have to do to get a start - maybe change your name to McVeigh.

That was only the people on Fox Sports Teams guessing the team. It has no basis in fact as they had Peter Everitt in the team even though Paul Roos has said on several occassions that Spida is not avaliable for Round 1 due to injury.
