New level of lazy?
Carlton just don't seem sold on the indigenous round concept, do they? Not much effort compared to many other clubs.

Personally I like the heritage of most AFL jumpers, and don't think they're a good platform for artwork. Carlton have just gone back to their heritage design and nice, clean navy blue look, so maybe somebody at the club agrees.

Many of these designs would be ripped to shreds if they were suggested for any other week, and rightly so. If we have to have the round a low-key approach like Carlton's or Freo's is a better way than some of the 60's wallpaper efforts we've seen served up.

I've been waiting for this very argument to come for a while.

There's a natural moral dilemma at work here, a dichotomy between critiquing design work and respecting the art form.

We all criticise and complain about designs here, the nasty taste left in our mouths currently concerns the inability to reconcile the fact that these designs carry significant culture and often spiritual weight.

My two cents; as with any design, criticise based on how it looks not on a canvas or by the character of the artist, but how effective it is as a footy jumper.

This. Football jumpers are not a blank canvas for the artist's intentions to shine out from. They're a functional object that needs to achieve that function. Art must be subordinate to that... and if that compromises or demeans the art, then don't put the art on there.

Art and design are different things. Quote a post that's being disrespectful towards the indigenous artworks. There are none (ok perhaps the the comments on the Collingwood one for not feeling 'indigenous enough', but otherwise no). Criticisms are purely about asthetical appeal as a football jumper - kind of the point of the forum. I've heard Lindsay Thomas and Sarita King (who designed North's three jumpers), talk about the storylines of the artworks, the idea of the Kangaroo icon, the footprint in the dust, the kangaroos symbols traveling home to Arden Street. Disrespecting the spiritual side that's so important to many indigenous players would be not on. But that is on another planet to saying something like the 'clean' white stripes look better, or it looks too cluttered with the flags on there, or this year's is a bit too subtle or whatever. That's the point of the forum.

i've read a couple questionable comments, but i've put it down to more of an ignorance of indigenous art than anything else.

also, are we all looking at the same carlton jumper? would have thought it was the better one they have produced

Most of the complaints on the Carlton jumper aren't about the design, it's about the offical pictures being of an unfinished jumper without collar or cuffs or even front and back sewn together.

Loved (and bought) our one. First one I think has looked really good.
It probably does in person, but I remember the issue being the fact that it was invisible far away and on TV making it look like a normal jumper.
I saw a replay of last year V Sydney on TV a few weeks back and didn't know it was Indigenous round (thought Sydney wore it as a one off again) until I saw the close up of Carlton.

Of last years one? Yeah that was very subtle. This years seems far more obvious.

Jillong? Is this where Geelong comes from?

I like it when the indigenous designs work into the essential elements of the club's jumper (in this case the hoops) as opposed to a completely new design.
I'm happy with either as long as it's done well. The worst thing is when they try to force the design elements in where they don't really fit or just lazily draw over/around them. The new Bulldogs design or the old Geelong design being an example.

Why do so many of these jumpers insist on cramming as much artwork as possible into every little space?

I think the best ones are where the design conforms to the jumper, rather than just being haphazardly thrown in. Crows 2015 is the best one I've ever seen. From this year I think the Pies have a good one and Melbourne's is pretty nice too.
