St the ground it really is evident how behind Rayner’s fitness is compared to everyone else on that field and that includes Hodge who also struggles. Rayner just blows up so quickly and then struggles doing any repeat work and back it up. Evidently, this is acceptable to the coaches and match committee.

Bastinac should also have been an in this week given who went out.
Rayner lack of a big tank for second efforts, it was shown more when he was up the ground.
Not saying the kid should be a mid. Although he really struggles second efforts. Which probably does not help his confidence getting run off on.
You compare him to Linc or Charlie and you can see what the extra pre seasons will bring.
In 2 minds re NEAFL I understand he is below par although it is slower pace back there. Sometimes you can get confidence playing a grade below and sometimes it is not the push you need.

I haven’t been a fan of his this year, but thought he was much better today.

He was. But he cost at at crucial moments and they ran it away.

It's almost getting too hard to work out his value. If it were anyone else would people be so forgiving of not being able to clutch a grab or lock it in.

I just don't know any more . But I'd like to give someone else a crack just to see..

Zorko and McCluggae do and so to Robbo. Although our small forwards get drawn to the pack mark like a moth to a flame
Absolutely. Rayner has no business trying to take mark of the year every time the ball gets bombed forward. That is 100% a coaching issue, because he should be getting direct instructions not to do that. Charlie as well. He gave away a stupid free kick trying to launch himself into orbit. Get out of Hipwood and McStay’s way. All they do is drag their men into the contest or leave them on the deck to mop up and clear.

Disagree. For most of the game after clearances Fyfe just played behind the ball with nobody tagging him. That was part of the reason for our slow ball movement
That’s fine. I’ll leave it to others who saw the broadcast to comment. Would have been an exciting game to be at. Shame we couldn’t win it for you / us.

This is one thing I just don't understand . They have hardly taken a contested grab all year between the two of them .

So just give it up for a while or if you have to launch from behind to contest just knock it out.

It's driving me insane tbh.

We do love kicking to the pack.. Be it the wing or in front of goal.
Not at the games so is it lack of any other options wider again coaching or just way to easy kick to a 50-50 instead of looking for something else.
If the ball spills they run off us as we have 4-5 bodies on the ground.

Our forward entries in the second quarter and the start of the last quarter killed us.

We had 85% of the ball in our forward line in the first half of the 2nd quarter and did not kick a goal.

We also need the big guys making more marking contests to bring the ball to ground and stop Cameron and Rayner flying for impossible marks. They gave away free kicks which relieved the pressure for Freo. That is where Hipwood is a disappointment for mine - he gets out-marked way too often.

If this happened at the gabba and I'd had half a dozen beers in me I'd probably be absolutely ropable and do or say something id regret, but I am surprisingly stoic about this result. 3 very winnable games coming up, worry is we don't run out of steam before bye.
I like him too, but he made some really bad mistakes - can play and I’d select him again

Wow a tad harsh
Hinge has got the goods you can see that from a mile away
That tackle he laid was superb which already surpasses Cutler who is nothing more than a non defensive kick
Very nice kick too that goal was superb
Drop Martin and bring in Archie I definitely advocate and Rayner needs to back a level and stop flying for marks with Charlie that impedes Mcstay and Oscar

I say again it is a coaching issue. Given that Charlie is just about the best in the league below his knees, he needs to be crumbing. Same with Rayner. As I said, they are dragging additional players into the contest and making it harder for our forwards. The fact that after a half of football Rayner has no capacity to run and apply defensive pressure just makes it look worse.

Rayner was our 7th highest possession winner tonight. If he has a poor tank then what’s everybody else’s excuse.

I think Cameron had 4 touches after quarter time. Clearly he doesn’t have the tank either.
Rayner is a talented kid hence i still play him. Finds the right place where the ball is going.
If he does not get it seems the second effort his tank is gone. Not sure confidence as well some of the early games he ran guys down.
Cameron yep. We get one qtr maybe 1 and half normally from him or Rayner. McCarthy become the most consistant of the three for a whole game.
Once they held the ball launches out of our back half.

Raynor is so out of form. He tried to get involved but is fumbling everytime he gets near it in the air and on the ground. This cost us tonight, as dod Cameron's very poor set shots.

Well he started on the wing did he not and started really well.

I was wondering whether the boss wanted to get his possession count up.

Maybe we expect too much for the guy to be taking a couple of contested marks and running down the opposition.

They were both right out of gas in the last quarter. Of the small forwards McCarthy contested really well last 15 minutes.

We can't be too critical ,they gave their all , one more goal would've done it.

Mitch Robinson - 3 contested disposals. What’s going on there?

Mitch has been in superb form us this season but had a relatively quiet game this time.

It happens to the best of them.

Rolled his ankle early in the Adelaide game so maybe he was carrying it into this game.

On a positive note. How good was McStay’s effort to run and pressure a Freo defender before wrapping him up and getting a free for holding the ball? Damn fine work Dan!

Then as expected, he went back and missed the easiest of set shots from well inside 50. 😩

A chance for him to lock down a spot in the midfield went begging.

We’ll have to settle on him improving 90% of his game.

Getting to the stage though where he’s more reliable than Hipwood or Cameron but that’s probably more a reflection on them.

Don't get the Rayner hate.

He's been presenting really well but just can't catch a break the last few weeks. There were 2 or 3 opportunities in this game where better delivery would have seen him swallow an uncontested mark.

The kid will come good.
