Richmond: The Tigers were comfortably better than Hawthorne after quarter time to round out 23 point winners with 5 goals in the last. Dion Prestia was the leading disposal getter on the ground with 28 whilst key forward Tom Lynch was the dominant force up front with 4 goals, Jack Riewoldt and Dustin also kicking 3 goals apiece.

Essendon: It was an embarrassing defeat for the Dons, only laying 30 tackles against a dominant Sydney side to godown by 58 points. Darcy Parish had 31 disposals that were largely ineffective whilst key forward Peter Wright was the only multiple goal scorer with 2, the Dons not up to the fight in their first interstate trip of the year.

Richmond defence vs Essendon forward line

So far Essendon have kicked a goal 21.97% of the time it enters their forward 50, 1th in the AFL. Richmond's defence has conceded a goal 22.34% of the time, which is currently 7th in the AFL so far. Richmond will be missing Noah Balta to take in form Peter Wright, most likely leaving the task to second gamer Bigoa Nyuon, a big challenge for the young Sudanese born player, as Wright is currently tied for 4th in the Coleman medal and is the most accurate kick of the top 20. Nathan Broad is likely to get the match up on young forward Kaine Baldwin, the tall hasn't really found his feet at AFL level yet but this is a big opportunity for him to do so.

Midfield/rucks battle

Both Essendon and Richmond are bottom 6 for clearance and contested possession difference this year, an area both have struggled in for a long time. Essendon will be looking to Darcy Parish to get the ball moving forward from the middle here, as his support crew of Zach Merrett, Dylan Shiel and Andrew McGrath simply haven't been getting much done, but the injury to Jye Caldwell presents an opportunity for Archie Perkins to come into the midfield rotation. Dion Prestia has been the man for Richmond in the middle, but when you add the star power of Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin it is a little surprising that they don't win a lot of contested ball. On the outside, Essendon will be hoping former Richmond VFL player Sam Durham can unlock something for the Dons whilst Kamdyn McIntosh's gut running will make it tough for the Dons. Rucks wise, Toby Nankervis and Ivan Soldo are a strong ruck combination that young pairing Sam Draper and Nick Bryan will have to try to quell somewhat.

Richmond forward line vs Essendon defence

Richmond are kicking a goal 27.29% of the time it enters their forward 50, 2nd in the AFL currently. Essendon's defence has been very leaky, conceding a goal 26.82% of the time it enters defensive 50, which is dead last in the AFL currently. Tom Lynch, the coleman leader, will be Essendon's biggest worry but impressive young tall Zach Reid will probably get the chance to combat one of the best key forwards in the game this week, whilst the returning James Stewart could play on Jack Riewoldt, who has had a return to form the past few weeks for the Tigers. Look for Jayden Laverde to try to negate Dustin Martin's influence when he's forward as well.

X-Factor Player

Maurice Rioli junior has been electric for the Tigers inside 50, expect him to rise to the occassion of his first Dreamtime game.

Key stat

Richmond: Forward half turnovers. Richmond's game is built around it, if they can lock the ball inside 50 they'll kick a winning score.

Essendon: Goals/inside 50 conceded. This has been a huge issue for the dons, their defence is leaky and the Richmond have killed it forward of centre

Tip

**** Richmond. Essendon by 17

Out: Shiel, Draper, Waterman, Heppell, Merrett (it won't happen but)

In: Phillips, Baldwin, Wanganeen, Cox, Smith (sub)

We need one indigenous player for this round. Tigers have a few!

Club needs to make a statement. Merrett & Shiel are the senior players Rutten is talking about. 1 Mark from Draper is not enough.

Caldwell is likely out with concussion protocols.
Merrett should be fit.

The question is, who comes in ?
Cox got injured, is Phillips ready ? Tex? Jones?

Or are we looking forward to Smith , BZT and Ham coming back in ?

It won't matter but just couldn't help but wonder.

Caldwell isn’t out with concussion? I thought he hurt his shoulder

Stewart, Phillips, Cox and Jones were listed as 'test' last week. Although there are some extended absences and no VFL game this week.

In- Hird, Baldwin
Out- Caldwell, Francis

Backs: Jayden Laverde, Jordan Ridley, Jake Kelly
Half-backs: Dyson Heppell, Nick Hind, Mason Redman
Centreline: Andrew McGrath, Zach Merrett, Tom Cutler
Half-forwards: Nic Martin, Kaine Baldwin, Ben Hobbs
Forwards: Matt Guelfi, Peter Wright, Tom Hird
Followers: Sam Draper, Darcy Parish, Dylan Shiel

Interchange: Zach Reid, Sam Durham, Archie Perkins, Nick Bryan

I think Guelfi needs another tackling pressure forward to help. Hird is it.
Hobbs to get Caldwell's midfield minutes.
Francis is never going to learn the game plan in time. Let's get games into Baldwin.

This exercise feels like rearranging deckchairs.

Out: Caldwell (concussion/shoulder), Shiel (omitted).
