Might get a thread questioning his intensity and care factor like Gibbs has.....:(

No Way. He's already got one thread going. He's form is a little bit down for sure, but let's not start questioning his intensity or care factor. He still did some good extracting tonight, it was just his disposal that let him down. He'll come good. I would rather see him play a less physical role in the coming weeks even though we still need him in the clinches. Might free him up a bit, and give the body a break. C J is still J C.

our shots to goal killed us in the end. 2.9 last qtr not acceptable

blues need a tall strong marking forward. time to bring in luke mitchell

I know people are excited about Mitchell, but he's a very long term prospect. He needs years not months in my opinion. 2 shoulder surgeries already. Missed most of his final year in TAC Cup with injuries. Played barely any VFL footy these last 2 years. We can all hope, but I'm not confident that he's the answer to our forward issues just yet. Maybe by 2014-2015 if we're lucky. (Hope I'm wrong).

Kick 1/3 rd better and who is going to beat us really? Geelong had their BEST team on paddock - ex Pods.

come on man, every team is suffering injuries this year not just Carlton but we are missing arguably 4 of our more important players as proved the case in the 2nd half of last year.
Varcoe, Menzel, Christensen, Podsiadly are no slouches and Bundy has been terrific this year for us so he was going to be a big out especially against a team that likes to run in Carlton.

I know the media don't like to mention anything Geelong-related (it's mostly the big 4 Melbourne-based clubs) but suggesting injuries cost you the game is a bit rich.

I'll raise you Murphy, Scotland, Carrazzo, Waite, Laidler, Thornton, Russell, Mitchell and Davies.

There are two B&F winners and a runner up in that lot.

It was nice to have Kruezer, Henderson and Duigan back from injury though.

Injuries didnt cost us the game; not taking our opportunities when they were there cost us the game. In the last quarter we had more F50 entries and wound up kicking 2.9 (and one OOB on the full), compared to your 4.3.

Geelong took their opportunities when they had them; we didnt. We lost as a result.

Injuries, and a few mystifying free kicks at crucial times didnt help of course. But im not blaming the result on them.

A few people have mentioned Mitchell as the possible answer to our forward-line trouble. I think it will take him some time after his horrid run of injuries, and given his age. It might be worth putting him in the 1sts for a few games at the pointy end, for development purposes. He definitely needs more games in the VFL, but then, the Northern Blues are getting hammered regularly.

Dirty - you have surprised the hell at out of me. Well done.

Boots - Well played. Great composure. Amazed at the signs he is showing already.

Watson - Some good work. Massive unit. Must be given regularly time in 1sts now.

Have to say, I don't recall a worse run of injuries at Carlton over the last 20 years. Is it coincidence? Or, do we start to ask serious questions of our conditioning coach(es) and conditioning strategies?

Think the season is over, but, I'm looking forward to seeing the young guys develop.

that's all good and all mate but I am not questioning how many B&F's you are missing or how many runner ups they have had, I'm talking about important players who make up the structure of a successful side and the ability to carry out the game plan against different opposition from week to week.
Varcoe was terrific last year and he capped it off with a brilliant finals series. His zip and ability to break the lines as well as kick goals is as valuable to us as Murphy is to you.
I'm not going to debate how good your out's are to ours because I know that we are lacking class/polish and we likely find that quality once those blokes (apart from Menzel) all return.
We also have our no.1 ruckman currently gaining fitness in the VFL and he will likely come in later in the year so you won't see us get beaten as often as we did tonight due to his size.

You mention 2.9 but I can clearly recall at least 3 that were rushed and another 3 that were just players throwing the footy quickly onto the boot and missed.
So you actually only had 3 legitimate shots that should have gone through just like our missed chances down the other end.

All in all you guys will get back to where you were early in the year and I'm confident Geelong will find the form we showed in last years finals.

I actually thought tonight's game was one of the worst I have ever seen in years. No highlights apart from a couple of terrific high marks but it was just a scrappy, tough and very boring encounter by both teams.
The type of game Brett Ratten and Chris Scott would have enjoyed.

Wow, some people didn't watch the game at all.

Warnock was bog until subbed. I presume he was hurt.

Collins got touches finally ad after a bad start did some ok thigs. Still think he had a bad game, but I'm interested enough to give him a few more.

Gibbs was excellent on sj

Jam= good.

Aj terrie again. GOt better though.

Brock great again. Deserves a new 100k a year contract. Je owes us for trolling us for 400k all this time.

Hammer was v avg.

MK a little better.

Ellard is a goer. Want him around for a while.
Jeff? He is a weird one.

Get ready for a plethora of " mystifying " free kicks next week against Weagles when the serial duckers ( Selwoods, Shuey, Hams etc ) get to work....

Got the two umpire's favorites back-to-back. Thanks AFL scheduling.

Geelong won after Carlton kicked away their chances. Bad kicking is bad football. I guess they will blame Ratten for the players not taking their chances.

Sick of seeing players running off half back and inside 50 with no one goal side. Mids aren't and forwards aren't pushing up.

The Cats wouldn't take much out of that win. They're not the side they once were. Similar to Carlton being pushed by Melbourne before we put the foot down in the last quarter.
Why are people saying Watson did well!!! Where the hell was his intensity! NONE at all! Always lumbering to the ball, no fierce attack, just letting his player get the easy ball! Horrible IMO
Harsh.

not had a chance to watch the game but the first thing that pops out is 19 behinds. this has been terrible all year for us, so not totally surprising that it probably contributed to the loss. almost to the point where we should expect poor kicking for goal.

Yet another game that was lost at the selection table. Aaron Joseph was terrible yet again last night. He gave away the first goal of the game and then played like a spud as Motlop smoked us. It's disappointing to see the team have a crack and one hack selection make the difference in the result.

Much better effort from the players, had their chances in the last but let themselves down in front of goal. Geelong stepped up during the game when they needed to.

Good to see a bit more running, contested ball.

Walker can be frustrating at times but did provide a lot of run from the wing.

Warnock was magnificent, but can't see us playing 3 ruck - just don't get enough out of Hammer & Kruz with one of them playing key forward. Don't see much difference between Kruz & Hammer at the moment, both a little disappointing. If Kruz is injured, rest him, way out of sorts.

Hendo was ok up forward - does play a lot better down back, but until we can find a genuine key position forward think we have to play him there for 3 or 4 games to see how he goes. Otherwise our key forward player is just the small Betts. Probably why Betts feels he has to wear the pants size of a 7 foot key forward

Watson did ok, certainly deserves another go. Especially if we play Hendo forward. Bootsma deserves another go. Better game from AJ, but think his direct opponent was Motlop who had 3 goals at half time. Collins deserves another go. Actually puts his body on the line

Not sure what the go is with Yazza - is he injured? we're started him on the bench.

We let that one get away, but, so much more positive coming out of it.
With a little luck would have won against quality opposition. Everyone had a go.
Not happy with the heavy criticism of Hampson, Joseph and a couple of others. We
are undermanned, putting more pressure on certain players in "key" roles. I will continue
to say Hammer is our best long term ruck prospect, unfortunately he has to be the one asked to play forward atm. While he offers great drive from the stoppages, Warnock is fragile. Kreuzer is clearly not right, but long term needs another role, is a pinch hitter forward, not KPF.
Like a few other Joseph made some mistakes, his unfortunately were magnified given his role. He was not our worst. My biggest concern of those on the park is Garlett, he is way down on confidence and sometimes effort. A trip to the West on the wide open spaces is perhaps what he needs. Very close to a "Northern" holiday.
I am so pleased to see Watson and particularly McLean earning their stripes, the opportunity was long overdue. Also loving Tuohy released from the last line of defence. Such a tough role in our team given or "structures" and/or down hill skiing lapses. Detractors of our deep defenders need to consider the regular lack of assistance from upfield.
We probably will suffer a couple more losses before we right the ship. The positive is the exposure our "lesser lights" have had. Gotta love Bootsma, but likely to need to go back soon while his body develops. Except Murphy, most of our soldiers will return soon, depending on fitness levels, there is no reason we cannot return to early season form.
I have been critical of Ratten, while I feel that there are better coaches around, if he has learned his lesson from recent weeks he may still be the right option going forward. Our balance and development has been stifled through Ratts' efforts to find spots for a few favourites, and his blind reliance for our guns to carry the burden rather than spreading the load (particularly midfield). Barring injuries, I believe we are heading in the right direction. We can still make the eight, and if we do the others will not want to play us with a full complement on the park.

  1. Andy Collins & Josh Bootsma are going to be future guns for this club. They both played very well last night, Bootsma took a couple of good 'saving marks' in defence & Collins finally came of age in the AFL.
  2. WE ARE CHOKERS! - have to get rid of the mindset of going into our shells when a team starts tightening up on us.
  3. Bryce Gibbs MUST go forward. I have preferred him playing out Defence until more recently as he has demonstrated that he makes good use of his footskills, but we certainly need his poise in kicking in front of goals more. No one else is as reliable (except Eddie) and his ability to kick from outside 50 with a set shot is a tool we sadly miss atm. I think Watson did enough to stay in defence and together with Duigan & Laidler when he returns, I think Bryce is no longer required down back.

We looked better last night. Obviously came to play and it showed. Inaccuracy and Warnock being subbed cost us in the end.

But driving home and listening to Ratts in the post-game presser upset me the most. Last night was a must-win for us. I wanted to hear some disappointment and anger in his voice. Instead all I heard was Ratts "happy with our effort", thought it was a "step in the right direction", "plenty to be positive about".... No mention of how disappointed he was at letting this one slip.

Just thought I'd get more from Ratts. He sounded like Kevin Sheedy or Guy McKenna happy with a GWS or Suns "good effort". We need more than that!!

How can that desperation and hard nose approach be embraced by the players when the coach is content with a 2 goal loss.

FWD line down. Hampson not working at the minute... Garlett missing the ones he should be getting and fumbly...my god, fumbly. Walker - whats the story with him, seems to be on the ball a bit more.

This year is shot. Need to play Watson and Bootsma for the remainder of the year. Joseph either left as a tagger in the middle or out he goes for Lucas. Joseph makes stupid decisions, doesn't think like a backman, never uses the boundary, goes to ground too easily but I won't question his attack and endeavour.

Maybe Walker back into attack and Lucas taking on the job of Scotland for the next couple?

So glad Duigan had a decent game.

Far more "mystifying free kicks" against us. The umpires pretty much changed the HTB rule for our players.

It went both ways mate. Brocks HTB in the first QTR was definitely a push in the back, and how Selwood got a head high free after holding the ball underneath him in the 3rd or 4th (Pretty sure it was the 4th) was a complete screw up by the umpires.

I'm not using that as an excuse, i'm just saying the shit calls went both ways.

Was happy with our effort last night especially from our younger players. If we had've taken our chances when we had the momentum i have no doubt that we would've won. Oh well thats Footy.

This isn't our year, obviously. I hope we keep getting games into our newer players coming through in preperation for 2013.

would have liked Hendo to get the pill a bit more but was always going to be tuff
