There’s this stupid thinking around the rule that’s process based rather than outcome. The purpose is to stop players going in and impeding. So why not just pay 50s post facto if players actually impede

Spot on. What makes it more annoying is that players frequently go well over the mark deliberately after a mark is taken for the sole purpose of delaying the play on yet the umpires never impose 50 until they've given about 3 warnings to come back. The rule about the protected area is workable if they exercised common sense in applying when a player is clearly interfering but of course they don't At least not when we are the defending team , cant recall when we've been the beneficiaries. And we don't have all of the dumb players in the comp.
