You'd have to imagine that Trew's papers are stamped. IIRC, he's out of contract at the end of the year. He's had a good run of form in the WAFL, and still can't crack the team. I think it's safe to say, for whatever reason, match committee just don't rate him

Trew is an inside midfielder who doesn’t appear to be able to play anywhere else. So he is competing against Kelly, yeo and Reid. Gaff and sheed play outside.

Like Brodie at dockers, if you can’t play multiple positions, you can’t get a game as the club can only carry one one-dimensional player (eg brayshaw at dockers). You have to be then an exceptional at that one thing which brayshaw is.

Club isn’t going to push Kelly out, who has been excellent, to give trew a game.

More of a threat to gaff and sheed are hall and Johnston. If they produce a 30 poss game, you can guarantee one of these is out.

It also strikes me that people call for gaff not to be picked over Williams. That simply does not work from team balance point of view.

Kelly may be an inside midfielder but doesn't play like an inside midfielder.
Rarely gets his hands dirty and I watched him numerous times avoid the ball and avoid tackling while waiting for someone else to get the ball.

Sheed and gaff...calling them outside midfielders is an insult to all midfielders.
They are just plain seagulls and the game has gone so far beyond how they used to play that now when they get the ball they are beset upon quickly and just dump the ball.

Simpson said you can't teach an old dog new tricks on the radio last night and gaff is playing what he has for 13 years....seagull footy.

Why do you hate Kelly so much? Statistically his contested ball numbers, pressure acts and tackles are very good. It’s his disposal that lets him down.

Kelly isnt Yeo/Reid, but hes still in there doing tough work. You cant just load up on 3 bulls at CBAs, you need at least one slightly more outside leaning player for balance, which is Kelly.

A clear case of seeing what you want to see in regards to Kelly.

Tbh the only actually bad selection that doesnt make sense is Sheed. Maybe the plan is for him to tag somebody which we dont think Culley can do which is probably fair but he has not been good.
Sheed hasnt been playing that much midfield lately anyway, hes been 5th or 6th in line for midfield time, with his focus seeming to be NOT on getting the footy but his man instead, so quoting disposal stats from a flogging isnt entirely fair.

Petch in for Dewar makes sense, Gaff our best performing winger in the WAFL to replace Hunt, Flynn for JW, HEdwards for Rotham. All decent seemingly logical swaps, all good.

Disappointing the list is so old again but it is what it is when some of the kids are not ready or not performing well right now in the WAFL

One of few balanced replies in here.

Gaff will probably get a couple of games while Hunt is on the sideline with his toe.

I don’t love the inclusion but it does make sense when you think of role needed to be filled and players available.

Looking at the team wouldn’t be surprised if Sheed is the sub.

Yeah Sheed has to be the favourite for the sub, might be Maric sub too depending on weather, but id prefer they didnt. Just late change a tall for a small if its going to be awful weather.

Gaffy will be gone soon enough, hes got pressure for his spot now with Chesser and hunt doing the role well enough. This isnt the last 2 years when we had literally nobody else to play wing. Some melts on here are forgetting the circumstances of the last 2 years when Gaff got games for free each week, he was one of only a handful of consistently healthy players lol

My gut tell me a few a terrified of Gaff having a good game and breaking back into the side for the rest of the year and potentially playing his way into a contract extension lol.

Sub should be sheed, but we’ve played Maric in sub role a couple of times so could be him too.

There will be a lot of chipping around the back half, just because that’s how you play against a Lyon coached team, will be melts in the game day thread for real.

There's not a decent midfielder on the interchange; and if Sheed is the busted-nose sub that leaves Gaff and Petch, not exactly impactful mids (Petch has his moments but comes in rusty)
After last weeks performance and lack of pressure (couldn't get hold of the ball), there was talk about focussing on pressure this week, so you'd expect to see that from the first bounce...

They’ve also named Ginbey on a wing, which I expect Gaff to predominately play.

Mids: Yeo, Kelly, Reid, Ginbey with cameos from Pettrucelle Duggan, Chesser

It’s enough midfield cover to think Sheed as sub is possible, if not likely.

Gaff comes onto the wing and Ginbey goes into the guts. We have consistently been running with Yeo/Kelly/Reid/Ginbey as our 4 main mids, with guys like Petch/LEdwards/Sheed pinch hitting occasionally. Sheed to sub with Petch as the 5th guy, when Sheed comes on in the last qtr he can chop out a bit too.
We have enough mids in the team tbh

True enough. I guess subconsciously was thinking of Trew, Hall, Culley -mids with a harder edge. But apart from Culley, they're limited in how/where they play.

I can only think he called them out on their selection bullshit at some point and they marked his card as an agitator. You would have to think Scofield and Brayshaw are champing at the bit to get Trew in for a tell all when they axe him at years end. Should be juicy.

If that was the case he wouldn’t be an emergency

Trew IMO would likely be better than either Gaff or Sheed playing on a wing.

Or as a defensive mid.

And can provide a legitimate inside rotation.

Skills not up to it?

Everyone wants Gaff to kill it, the issue is he's coming in at the expense of developing a young player who could play his role.

It amuses me how some people just think everyone's meant to go get the ball like Kerr would. I mean, yes in a contest when it's your turn, but in congestion some players are meant to hold shape.

Some of our best plays against the Demons were from long handballs/soccers out of congestion to players in space rather than pointless 500mm handballs to people under pressure.

I think on TV the compression can also make it seem like players are 1m away from a ball carrier when they're actually about 3 or 4m way.

Imagine if Kelly actually got the ball being an inside mid, he wouldn't have to tackle so much...

He’s also our equal leader in contested possessions.

I remember someone else getting plenty of the ball and plenty of tackles, but the possessions were junk possessions and the tackles were turtle tackles so none of it counted. It’s amazing how the narrative always twists to suit whatever view someone holds.
