Answerth’s kicking has been much improved but he’s also not biting off more than he can chew which has been terrific for his game.

It works when he plays the lockdown role but I don’t think it would work if he plays and is being expected to be dangerous with his disposal which McKenna definitely is being asked to do.

I think answerths disposal definitely looked better in 2024. Maybe I was grading on a curve though.

If we can just maintain our composure and play to our ability, we will be be 10-6-1 after the next two rounds and that would surely have us well and truly cemented in the top 5 or 6 with a huge home game against the Swans to follow.

Or we can suffer a horrible upset loss to either the Crows or the Eagles and kiss our season goodbye.

He helped turn the tide in the second half with 19 of his 28 disposals, using the ball superbly to help set up numerous scoring chains. Then, with 75 seconds remaining and scores level, the 26-year-old delivered four premiership points for the Lions with an exquisite set shot from the boundary line. In his draft year, Hugh was known a classy goal kicking midfielder.

he was almost universally considered to be the #! Draft pick

The class has always been there but the goal kicking has until recently, been a disappointment.

He appears to have turned the corner. He's kicked some absolute beauties this season, including that gem the other night

Irrespective, he was a steal at Pick 3 and would anyone here seriously have preferred Andy McGrath ( who Essendon took at Pick 1) or Taranto (who GWS fell over themselves to get at Pick 2 and in the process gave us 3 which was Hugh and 17 which ended up being Berry)?

I think we laughed all the way to the bank with those Pick swaps

Hugh ranks elite for goals kicked as a midfielder this season. Has well and truly found his groove in that regard.

GWS did prefer Taranto (eh) but they also got a bunch of points out of the swap that gave us Berry which let them grab a heap of academy talent.

Pretty impressive draft nonetheless, with all the top three (actually, four) about to hit 150 games which is unusual in itself. Usually there's at least one bust up there (Boyd, Schache, Dow, Pickett, etc).

Bruce has had some nice moments to start his career, but personally I wasn't sold on him being best 22 atm. He was wonderful in the fourth quarter on Friday night.

9 disposals @ 89% with 6 score involvements and 2 intercepts. Only Dunkley had more touches in the last quarter.

Incredible how many on here were willing to let he and Berry walk for academy points. One of the best goal kicking mids in the comp and IMO compliments Dunkley particularly well who is a premier two way mid in the comp but more defensively minded.

They were great but to be honest I love the defensive efforts more. The spoil of the kick-in was more special.

Similarly I loved Charlies sprint with and after the ball at the end of the game more than his goals.

When those two are putting in the desperate hard yards we are such a better team

Just watched the last two minutes again- Charlie busting a gut down back was crucial to the scoring chain that ended with Hugh's goal. As was Will "smooth mover" Ashcroft.

In a close match, votes invariably favour the winners.

If Hugh kicks that last tough shot at goal OOB and Melbourne go down the other end and score the winning goal/behind, Viney almost certainly gets 2 or 3 more votes and Hugh gets 2 or 3 less.

The reality is that Hugh basically won the match with a clutch goal for the ages.

He deserved those votes

Not downgrading the effort of Hugh to kick that goal under pressure but don't think I ever saw Browny or Bradshaw miss from that pocket.

It's the easiest hard shot in the AFL. Even Lynchy laughs about how much he loved getting hold of it on that angle. Something to do with how the posts are positioned and the wind . You just aim left of the near goalpost and it drifts straight through the middle

Of course you still have to execute and not shank it.
