Review Round 16 = Gold Coast 101-90 Collingwood

A Collingwood game is a big game for most opposition sides. For us though it’s 2 weeks running where we’ve been flat against a low drawing side. The crowd atmosphere for most of the north game was similar to when fans were locked out during dictator Dan’s covid craze. From the tv broadcast it seemed similar today.

I'm as disappointed tonight as I've been in any game all season, we had them on toast and didn't finish the job.

It is what it is at this point though, we keep flirting with playing rubbish football for extended periods in games and it has bitten us on the arse now 4 or 5 times at least this season, so you'd think we'd pull our fingers out some time before the last quarter but apparently that still hasn't sunk in.

Starting from a likely position of 6th after the end of this round one game clear of 12th with no percentage to speak of, this is our run home:

Essendon - 50/50 (could go either way)
Cats - 50/50 (possible win based on current form)
Hawks - 50/50 (possible loss on current form)
Richmond - W (should win on current form)
Carlton - L (loss on current form)
Sydney - L (loss on current form)
Brisbane - 50/50 (could go either way)
Melbourne - 50/50 (could go either way)

This loss is really going to sting especially given how the suns capitulated last week, now we need to find 4 wins in those last 8 games in which we could easily go anything between 1-7 and 6-2.

One thing that is for certain is we can't keep playing shithouse football for so long in games because most of the teams in the list above will happily jump us, need to work hard on our consistency and work rate across the 4 quarters and not keep letting the opposition get a lead on us with minimal resistance the way we have been week in and week out.

TL;DR - Just can't keep putting in rubbish efforts like this for 60-90+ minutes in a game and expect to go anywhere this season.

Dan didn’t make covid you flat earther wanna be.

Feels like we had our system, midfield and defensive structure in an okay place 4-5 weeks ago, we just needed some cattle to return to go to another level.

Unfortunately now our midfield has dropped off (barring you know who), and the defense has started to let a few more cheap goals in, probably as a result of a lack of control.

As such we are having to play catch up against teams out of the 8 and giving starts.
I do hope a few blokes just needed the run, but again we seem to have lost a few to injury meaning more shuffling.

Crisp must be our most important player because when he struggles we really look ordinary.

Also think we look best when we have Bobby, McCreery, Schultz and HH swarming and trapping the ball forward. Seemed to be none of that lately and more Bobby and co playing as full forwards

Defence is our biggest issue at the moment. We let the bottom side kick 19 goals two weeks ago,and today the Suns kicked 14 goals 17.They could easily have kicked more if they had kicked straight. We’re just playing way too loose, not manning up enough ,and Darcy Moore,I have to say,is hopelessly out of form.

He had one goal kicked on him today by his opponent. The second Lukosius goal he wasn’t even on the ground and was due to an IQ turnover.

Do you know every goal kicked against us doesn’t get automatically recorded against Darcy?

You need to do better research.
No I don’t. He has way more ability than what his output is in 2024. Like I said, I’m struggling to understand what his role is or what it is we want from him. He should have been playing on King. Is he or is he not our premier defender? If we are keeping him away from the best forwards so we get intercept marks or drive off the backline then it’s failed time & time again. We don’t get anywhere near enough from him in 2024.

Pies’ tackling tonight;

Really disappointing loss. I love that we’ve got that ability to chase down a deficit, but I hate that we let it get to that position as often as we do.

Naicos - Does what he does, couldn’t have done much more.

JDG - Electric in bursts, will be better for the run

Howe - Gives us something nearly every time he goes forward these days.

Jaicos - Thought he was rushing early, found his feet and contributed.

DC - Stats are deceiving imo, thought he was well beaten.

Lipinski - in the top handful for score involvements, played his role.

Noble - Average

Quaynor - Growing increasingly disappointed with his year to date.

Pendles - Went missing, had some moments. Hopefully just a matter of needing to find some touch

WHE - See first half of Pendles

Crisp - Did his best to over complicate everything he went near

Krueger - a non-factor for most of the game. Again, had moments but not enough of them.

Sidebottom - Just a Steele Sidebottom type of game when everything else is falling apart around him

Mihocek - See Pendles

Maynard - Thought he was okay without being great

Hill - Looked like he could’ve been the difference, but like always, would prefer to be Mr.Hollywood than Mr.Do The Basics. Live and die by it I guess.

Moore - Really disappointed in Darcy. Lacked leadership when it was needed. Poor decision making (leaving his man to impact another contest), poor skills. Ironically, his best quarter was the last quarter when he actually went to King.

Frampton - Wouldn’t be a Pies game if Frampton didn’t go at a 1:1 ratio for good things and horrendous things.

Markov - the fairytale is over. Only room for he or Noble when we’ve got a full list to choose from.

Harrison - dirty night for a player we all have high hopes for.

Richards - Should start and play every game for the rest of the year, until he gives the selection committee a reason not to.

McCreery - Obviously injured but still left a lot to be desired when he wasn’t.

Sullivan - May as well have not played if I’m being brutally honest. Probably has a spell next week, might get lucky with a few injuries happening.

The common theme? Too many passengers, too many names with not enough contribution and too many losing their direct match ups.

Onto the next one.

Yep

For all the bad umpiring, for all the missed shots and even for all the garbage goals we let through, our effort for 3 quarters was the main driver behind this loss

As I said earlier, such a lack of effort in such a crucial game coming off the bye is just inexcusable

Darcy Moore was on the grassy knoll. Didn’t he run onto the field during a world cup qualifier at the MCG? I think he shot Mr Burns too. Also wasn’t he in China at the end of 2019 and he came back with a slight cold.

I knew Daicos bros got in last year, but genuinely surprised he got there for 2023. Particularly after his first 6 weeks, then injured late. But we finished first .
You sound like a very solid supporter from our premiership year no less.

Is this the first year you have started paying any attention?

I don’t think Moore was the worst of our defenders but it was pretty telling that Hoskin-Elliott was probably our best back there when he went back there lol

Really really poor game from us defensively tonight

Probably the worst I’ve seen from us for the season

Terrible defending transtiion
Terrible in one on ones
Terrible in pressuring turnovers

Just terrible defensively all night

Funnily enough, the worst efforts were at the end when we let them kick two incredibly easy goals

Daicos x 2 very good. DeGoey very good.

Frampton putrid.

Moore woeful.

Crisp ordinary

Sidebottom needs to retire

Sullivan needs a rest

Cameron got slaughtered and panicked at a crucial stage

Hill missed so many opportunities

Lipinski solid bug missed tackles

The rest ok to poor .

And got within 11 points

On to next week.

Absolutely disgraceful performance.

Framptons worst game of the year.

Did not deserve to win that at all.

Unfortunately Frampton is probably not the crack key defender that we like to imagine him to be. He was well beaten by both King and Lukosius tonight. Moore seemed to trail his opponent all night. Our smaller defenders were also underwhelming. Although I am sure there is much more to the loss than our defence being beaten by better opposition.

Now we reset.
We have no more byes and our travelling is all but over.
Of our eight games remaining, seven are at the MCG.
We’ve only played at the G twice in past eight weeks. It feels like we’ve been playing all over the place, copping injuries and generally just hanging onto our form.
Now the run to finish begins and we can get some continuity going.
Seven of the eight left are at the G. That gives me some positive vibes.
