I agree last night you want the game to be called off. What if someone is a point or 2 in front and fading . It would seem wrong to award them the game. Or what about if it's the first or second quarter .

Aside the various scenarios thrown up I think more than 30 minutes off after the players have been out there for more than 3 quarters is a big ask to come back and get your enthusiasm going again.

Players association need to get involved here. Speaking of getting involved.

I saw Died Pretty last time they were gigging and they were amazing. They are doing a show in Brisbane and one in Melbourne. Worth seeing.

Oof good shout.

Absolute star - we've got a real one here

But according to Bristoon his game was merely good and his biggest takeaway was he needs to fix his kicking :p

Melbourne were up by 33 points when lightning caused a 35 minute delay.

West Coast kicked a goal within 2 mins of the restart. They would go on to kick 4 unanswered. They also had 13/14 of the last inside 50s of the game and the ball was camped inside their forward half 82% of the time.

Sound familiar?
Greater Western Sydney Giants vs Sydney Swans - AFL Round 1, 2014 too. GWS were holding on and stopping a blow out at half time thanks to accurate goal kicking. Extended break thanks to lightning hitting the stadium, and they run over Sydney in the second half with a massive momentum switch.

Watching the game again, I don’t think McCarthy played as badly as we all think. Didn’t really have much of an impact sure, but he always seemed to be well positioned and doing what he should’ve been doing, just got a lot of unfortunate bounces or fumbled marks - and hard to hold that against him when the only people on the field that weren’t fumbling tonight were the two blokes at quarter time

What I'm hearing from these examples is we need to hire a specialist to take out the lights in games where we're getting smashed.

Daughter was on shift at the Mater last night.

They had a brown out and their generators kicked in at the same time.

Elec engineer mate reckons (my interpretation and words that are probably not perfect) that the lights being all on when the generator kicked caused too high a current draw for them and they failed.

Said if they had each pole delayed so one at a time free on the generator the generators would be able to handle it.

The AFL has no integrity when it comes to decisions they make. How can it be that the rule book describes what happens in the event of a game interruption but then on the night they just overrule and do whatever they like. The book says max 30 mins, but they apply 60 mins when it counts. Can we take the AFL to the tribunal?
They had the person responsible from the afl on the radio and she bacally said that the rules diidnt apply, you needed to look at the regulations. Eyes rolling

I mean one of the journas then asked, so the rules dont apply, she answered no, the regs do, but when pressed further, she says its up to the afl's discretion then as to what happens - she answers yes. Seriously what a joke.

She then also says it was fair for both sides - ok one could make that argument, but then refuses to acknowldge that it doesnt benefit the team leading by a substantial margin - even Fages said in his interview it was ridiculous as its blatantly obvious only one team can benefit. Fages also said that when the lights went out that he thougt Dees were stuffed with heat and we had them on the ropes - his words - then the break with only them with something to play for could benefit. Lastly, the AFL person so couldnt explain why Melbourne had an extra 5 minutes warm up before Lions were told the could come out.

Typical farcical AFL made up BS. Even Lethal said on radio that the game should be called off after 30 minutes as medicos would agree that its to risky to cool downed players health.

On first para, but isnt that exactly what they do with circket with Duckworth / Lewis - which i get this isnt cricket but a team gets awarded a win w/o opportunity to know how long is left?

No. The rules were applied as written. 30 minutes is the rule for amateur games but the AFL regs override these for AFL matches and they clearly state 60 minutes. The AFL has some discretion about that but that's for particularly extraordinary circumstances, which weren't in play.

You could argue that that rule should be amended, that's fair enough, but it was applied as written.

I'm not sure it is a bad thing that Melbourne went on a roll after the lights out fiasco. The Lions aren't a team that you want to rest easy after a successful response as last night.

Nobes was correct, this is a team that plays on emotion and they need to show us that the last 12 minutes weren't an anomaly by putting the Bulldogs to the sword for the four quarters next week.

Playing on emotion makes for an exhausting rollercoaster of a season but it keeps these discussions lively and last weeks discussions about this team were amongst the best I've seen on Bigfooty.

“You’d be a brave man to suggest Will Ashcroft won’t end up captaining this side,” five-time All-Australian Garry Lyon told Fox Footy.

“He’s played two games of footy, the raps were enormous – and (on Friday night) he was extraordinary. He looked as calm and composed and polished as anyone else on the ground.”

Logged in this morning to have a read and I couldn't believe the reactions.
Absolutely ridiculous isn’t it! Once again, like others have stated. The players are human! Look at where we have come from. Our fan base is one of the toughest to please in the AFL at the moment. Some people around here really need to understand you can’t be 100% on for every minute of every game for the year. It’s just not even remotely possible

Our young Lion cub’s flowing mane was bobbing up everywhere…he is very, very special
I was a big fan of Marcus but I think Will is going to be better than him .

We look so much better with Berry in the middle. He should be in there as often as possible if his shoulder is up to it. He wasn't game-changing in his impact like he was in the SF last year but he was more than solid. Daniher was brilliant - more of that, please.

I don't think Rayner will ever be the bull in the middle of the ground I thought he would be. He's a classy user of the ball so half-back will probably be his home for the foreseeable future. If he can clear up the rushed kicks to nowhere he'll be exactly what we need across half-back alongside Coleman. Joyce deserves to keep his spot as well.

All I wanted from us was effort and work rate. In that regard, the game was a resounding success. Punishing a team like Melbourne in the way we did was electrifying. That Zorko goal off the back of Mckenna's run was one of the best goals I've seen in a while from us.

Admittedly, I paid far too much attention to the last portion of that match when the game was basically over. The players wouldn't be too pleased with it, but we got the chocolates and that's all that matters.

Composure will come.
Considering the opponent last night and them being the best midfield in the comp and Premiership favourites with most, that’s a hell of a start to a career.

Still stupid. Surely if it exceeds 30 mins and the game is over both coaches just call it and not risk injury.
Yes it was so wrong allowing that game to continue .

Hopefully the rules change and it doesn’t happen again .
