I’m not dismissing it at all. Just because I valued Logan’s goals more than Cals it doesn’t mean one is good and one is bad.

Both were great, but for this game I valued Logan’s finishing ability on those two really tough goals more. Especially in the context of the game.

Cal had the more complete game and in a different match I’d give him the votes.

Sorry, wasn't implying you were dismissive. Just commenting on Cal.

Logans first goal was brilliant , I was looking to see if there was someone presenting in a better position. Thought it would be a massive knock for the team if he missed it. But if course he didn't. He is a genuine superstar in the making.

Was disappointed when Day passed off the ball. Great that will got his goal, but the pass was shoddy and that shot should have been within the wheelhouse of an experienced forward.

Don't mind Elixuh, he's obsessed with Morris and Rayner.

I went for Cal because he worked very hard from when we were 5 ? goals down to basically get us back in the game with 3 footy smarts goals and a couple of assists from memory.

He was a strong presence until Logan kneed him in the back of the head taking a screamer. Logan's goals were great , he could've easily missed the last 2 . 2 different players in what they bring , glad we have both of them

I have to disagree a bit on the bolded.
Yes, he is a KPF/ruck and he had a shot from a reasonable angle (not the pocket) so could have taken that set shot and no one would have said much if he missed.

At this stage we had not scored a goal but had players being very unteam oriented by having a ping instead of looking for a teammate. This actually continued until after halftime. Not much lowering of the eyes or holding up a bit till an option opened up from our players.

His kick to McLachlan was not great.
I think he intended it to be low but not that low. Ended up a team goal, our first for the game and McLachlan's first AFL goal.
He also got the handball away from the ruck contest for the Lions second.
He is new to the side and doing the team things are important at this early stage.

I was more disappointed with his other much easier shot that he missed.
However, his overall career goal kicking record of 117 goals 73 behinds indicates he is a reasonably good shot.

I get all that but the first shot was pretty much a soda. I guess playing his first game for the club ,given his role , he was probably a bit nervous and just wanted to do the right thing.

There is no way a fit Lester goes out for Tom Doedee. His run down double tackle where he beat two opponents today was sensational. He might not be in the “Leadership Group” but he is one of the greatest examples of a player who leads by example in the game. His intercept marking is almost as good as Harris Andrews and there is not a player in our defence who inspires more confidence when the ball is on the deck and has to be won or cleared to advantage.

Andrews and Lester are the DYNAMIC DUO in defence and there is no way you break that partnership up.
Lester is playing well, much better than I thought, and that is a credit to him. But Andrews and Payne are the Dynamic Duo, as Lester cannot mark the oppositions best KPF (R.1 ((2024))against Freo). He also struggles against mobile forwards (see Heeney' late goal last week). When Starc is playing, Ryan is often matched up on the 4th or 5th most dangerous forward and that allows him some freedom and his intercepting and offensive play has improved, and he is playing his role really well.

After 3 ACL's, Lions will be cautious with Doedee, and currently Lester is playing well, and deserves to keep his spot.

Whats everyones thoughts on the ref's during the game?

Awful. But not their fault. The AFL are changing the interpretation of a lot of the rules which require a, in relative terms, high degree of discretion. As a result you’re going to get these wildly inconsistent results - especially on HTB.

But some of the calls were hopeless. Blatant push in the backs that were called play-ons. Even that debacle where Big O bumped Harley Reid and another player got a 50 because the lions thought the free was back there. Just felt as if Umps were keeping WC in the game.

At best Will's kick to Eric went 14.5m. Yet they are focusing on 20m kicks inside D50.

Not to turn into a Richmond nuffie but does feel like a rule interpretation implemented because the previous year's premier optimised something.

Can add it to the Pies finally having late game decisions go against them last year (Umps are back on their bullshit now and ignoring them/not blowing the whistle) and the stand rule to stop the player on the mark cutting off angles.

I am not a crackpot.

Some of these "refs" are numbskulls.
Not just for us but the whole comp.......When chipping the ball across the backline...the ball clearly goes 20 to 25 metres sometimes...and some umps think they're clever by calling " no 15".
Zorko the victim of a few of these when under pressure.
Collingwood rarely a victim of this.
Zorko already adjusting by planning to play on at a microseconds notice.

Well Collingwood are the AFL's club, most protected species on the planet.

It’s the CFL brother, they’re trying to keep us down. I can send you some reading materials if you’d like to join our cause.

It looked like their plan has evolved to trying to waste time using the boundary lol

If Day is the answer, we're asking the wrong question. The game has clearly passed him by. Had minimal impact on and off the ball. Might be wrong but I don't think so.

McInerney was off the pace too, but he had good cause, and improved as the game went on.

We badly missed Starcevic's steady influence. Where the hell is Doodee? He told us several weeks ago he was "close".

5 score involvements, 3 hit outs to advantage. Stats don't back up those who said he had little influence

He would want this game to be one of his worst but it was a solid start

I'll give you 1 instance .
Levi in my view went off his mark or looked to play on.
Crowd went nuts that he had stood his mark and got unrightfully pinged.
Umpiring was a bit meh at times , seemed to be what old mate said about swings and roundabouts.
A couple of times I thought the ump didn't blow when we might of got pinged 50/50 call.
So wasn't that bad, was more so not feeling into it cause of the heat sitting in the sun , even had to pay $5.70 for a cold water.
It was better than the beer I gotto say.

A great example of why I don't comment on gameday. Lost my mind at how bad we were playing and was convinced we would not run it out given our lack of pre-season. Still think we got lucky in the third quarter they missed a few golden chances, they kicked some hard ones early though

THE GOOD

Lester: Superb actually. It would be patently absurd to drop him for Doedee on current form. It doesn't matter what Doedee is on, Lester is blending attack and defence incredibly well and holding the backline together.

Will Ashcroft - did some subline things in tight

Neale - last week we saw if you tag him we can adjust. This week showed if you don't he can dominate

Berry - has been excellent this year so far. Looks so confident. Great marking under pressure

Ah Chee - looks great as a deep forward. Might be his best position with no Joe?

Hipwood lifting - i will judge him by the bye has he had such a short pre season. Willed himself in to the contest though in the second half

Getting the W - last two premiers have gone 0-5 and 0-3. Could easily have been 0-2. If we can win at least one of the next 2 then 3-1 is a good launch point, at that stage our short pre season excuse is no longer

THE NOT YET BAD

Day - I can see he looks quite slow. I also think he looks solid enough in the ruck and has a good selfless style. Not convinced he is the answer but not saying he can't be for now. Forward line will look very different with Lohman and Cameron

THE BAD

No starce - thought we really missed his composure. Who was on Ryan? He was killing us. We should absolutely give him a long time off. But funnily enough we actually miss him more than Kiddy, because Zorko was such a good replacement

Ball-handling - never seen us fumble so much as a good side. Maybe the humidity? Other mob wasn't doing it...

12.10 start - no thanks. Would not surprise me if we are gassed next week. Wouldn't want to be a goal up at 3/4 time v the cats

Rayner - not getting carried away but after a ripping first quarter v swans he has disappeared!

THE UGLY

Our starts - has to be a watch. I was bracing us to have a very dodgy start to the year given a short pre season and players underdone. But slumping out of the blocks is not a habit you want to get in to.
