M57 was up and about, there are some pretty raucous supporters there, made it a pretty exciting afternoon. Pity there were big gaps in the gold members section on the outer half forward section: you’re gold members and don’t turn up for the biggest game of the year?

1. A word for Jono Ceglar: he’s a typical awkward Hawthorn ruckman, doesn’t win any points for style, but just puts in 100% in every contest, in the air or on the ground. He just never gives up.

2. Great to see the kids do well in such a big game, and a close finish like that is so good for their development. Miles looks very cool in the backline, and Worpel and Morrison did well, but they are just kids really, not fair to judge them under 50 games. Except Blake Hardwick, he’s already a champ!

3. Those criticising Roughie should just shut up. Okay, he’s not as good as he was, but he’s still a great presence out there, both as captain and as a big body, and he’s so important to our structure.

4. It’s always so good to beat those cheating bastards. After the game my daughter says “Now I don’t care if we don’t win another game for the year”. Have I brought her up right?

Go Hawks!

The bit I remember during yesterday was punkys excellent something out of nothing play when we were in a bit of trouble in the 3rd, took a contested mark than dodged around and delivered a beautiful ball to I think gunner. He is much more than a goal sneak and his goal assists yesterday were crucial. Could have kicked 4 or 5 again yesterday. Absolute star.

What a win, just about my favourite non-final win. Incredible game.

Miles has been terrific since coming into the team, a month ago I thought he was likely to be delisted but now he looks like a 200 game player. Composed and neat with the ball.

Morrison had his best game for the club, such a great sign in a finals like game. He is super composed and has a very high footy IQ. He also seems to have elite endurance.

Worpel. Just a monster last term. Not the same, but impact wise it had a bit of Silk about it. The kid's a bull.

It's official. O'Meara is elite again. He is just building each week. He is every chance to make AA next season.

Then the usuals, Gunston, Stratton and Mitchell were fantastic.

Two, I won't say negatives (shout out to wahawk), but concerns:

1. Roughy is a shocking kick for goal when the pressure is on. It's a bit annoying I seem to shout out 'Rough' at least once or twice a game this year. However, he is still very valuable to us and plays his role well as a 30 plus year old key forward. He still has some good footy ahead of him, if not at the levels from his prime. He needs a hand, and hopefully that's Lynch.

2. Brand. I am just heart in mouth when the ball is in his area. At times I felt he just looked lost or really clumsy. However, until Sicily is back our structure has shown we are better with two key-talls. Stratton has played the Sicily role the past few weeks, at an unbelievable standard.

Bring on the cats, can't wait to get to another cracker at the G at the best time slot in footy!

Go Hawks!
Good list management by us to have ready made ruckman on the list in case big boy goes down. Holds his own every week and allows us to compete in the clearances and what not. Thought he won the duel yesterday against an in form bellchambers.

Can you blame them? I thought without BB and Sicily a win was unlikely. Glad to be proven wrong. Epic effort.
And we should’ve won by 4 goals too. That’s the best bit.

Can’t wait to get The Prince and BigBoy back into the side.

Davo, you should be proud of her (not sure how old she is) !
But all I would have said is ‘just need to put the icing on the cake next week’

Mission accomplished ;)

He is a lock for AA.

Go Hawks!

I'm a gold member but I stand with other mates of whom are not all gold members, so that explains my seat vacancy on a weekly basis.

Still shocked on The Rioli retirement. My favourite player is gone. It is not the player but the style of play, the freedom and certainty that what he was doing would end in a positive result. It did not matter whether Rioli was against a ruckman or a small, he would edge his way to run away. :-(
Cyril’s loss to the afl is huge...
but Breust is marking the ball above his head, that’s new, Sicerly is out and Strats is doing the intercept roll brilliantly... great step ups.
He is a lock for AA.
I'd argue he is top 3 in importance at the club. Without his brilliance we would be far less dangerous. Pray to god he doesn't get injured the next few weeks.

Just watched the game again (why not)

Really was a finals like game and a pretty high standard too . Our issue has been consistency so let’s see how we can back that up next week.

With Shoey he is never going to kick us a bag but what he does really well for the most part is compete and create space for Breust, Gunston and Co to work in . They would love having him in the side .

He knows our system well and while he isn’t the end game solution for us he is clearly the best option now.
He isn’t a bad one either.

Did anyone read these posts on the Bombers board?
I think 1 in about 10 Hawk fans are actually decent human beings, some have contributed fairly well on Essendon threads over the last week and this is genuinely appreciated. The other 9? You wouldn’t piss on them if they were on fire. Obnoxious levels currently through the roof.

They deserved to win today but that will essentially be their Grand Final this year. Yes they will play finals (yes, we won’t... which most ‘realistic’ supporters already knew before the result of this game) but that will be about it. Clarkson is a great coach with plenty of well drilled seasoned experienced players who got them over the line today. Will they be there for their next flag tilt? No.

They are a strange supporter group indeed - on big footy, and to a lesser extent in real life. It may be that they have come to football late or that they have seen a lot of success, but in stark contrast to other supporter groups most of them seem incapable of acknowledging anything outside Hawthorn. They seem to spend a lot of their time doing their best to denigrate great players from other clubs (Ablett Selwood ect.). From what I read on their board it seems that the majority of them don't actually like or appreciate the game of football. Strange bunch.

You are forgetting the golden rule.

Any stats that favours Mitchell over any other player is a useless stat that doesn't reflect impact on the game. Other useless stats Mitchell beat Merrett in were clearances, contested to uncontested ratio, disposal efficiency, and inside 50s. Merrett did edge out Mitchell in clangers (by 1), but I'm sure there is a reason why its good to have more of those than less that I'll be told about in the main board Tom Mitchell thread.

Good post to read first thing Sunday morning.

They stand and applaud returned drug cheats and make all sorts of naive excuses for them hiding their injections from ASADA....but Hawks fans are the odd ones. Worth remembering.

Me too.. But was sitting with my friends in general admission in L4.
Yep. I never sit in my reserve seat on level 1.

Would much rather watch from a higher perspective to see the flow of the game better.

I really thought he would just be one of those guys too good for VFL but not good enough for AFL

Showing some really nice signs

Love his composure with the footy, seems to have lots of time, and his disposal is very good. I can see now why we kept him, and let Stewart go. Someone said Miles reminded them of a young Kade Simpson, if that's on the mark then we have a future champion. Time will tell.

Miles is more Heater Shaw, just an energetic pest around the club and runs all day on the field, that was my assessment of him before we drafted him and i stick by it...

Frawley was terrific.
Except when he was channeling his inner Duryea and taking on the opposition in the middle of the ground :p

But in his defense he absolutely amazed me when he took a mark in the first quarter rather than going the double fist!

A great win and good game to watch as well.

The senior guys are stepping up and being well supported by cameos by worp, Morrison miles etc - bringing a few young guys in has added some energy.

We still have some super elite talent - Gunston, breust and Stratton were huge, with JOM Burgoyne Mitchell and smith also good. When these guys fire we are still hard to beat. Stratton was ridiculously good - won or halved so many contests. If Sicily and Stratton can work out how to both play like that then look out.

Almost everyone played their part although rough is still struggling, Frawley is okay defensively but a liability with ball in hand and brand loses the ball in flight far too often.

Still it was only Essendon - a lot more work to do if we are serious about finals. We still have a tough run to make it and could still miss but we’ve shown a lot in the past few weeks that our rebuild is on track.
