Autopsy Round 23, 2023: St.Kilda v Geelong *HIGGINS 100TH*

Yep. I’m praying for a Melb final to take my boys - 12 and 10.

My two (16 & 13) have never had the chance to experience their Saints play a final live in Melbourne.

Both are absolute diehards… it will be a bloody emotional moment if they get that chance in a few weeks.

I'm gonna be away that weekend ://///

What's the odds we play the Thursday night?
Pretty high I would think given the Thursday night is usually one of the elimination finals.

I'll personally be pissed if it's Thursday, since then I won't be able to make it either down to Melbourne or up to Sydney from Canberra.

What chance we get this final at the dome?
Does it depend on who we play? Sydney and GWS you’d think might be.
If we play the Blues it’s probably at the G.

Just surmising though.

Wow Speedway was part of my growing up in Gippsland.

Morwell Airport speedway. Moe Speedway. Wattle Park Speedway near Warragal. All gone now.
Rosedale speedway is still going i think.

A good whiff of Castrol R ( with Castor oil ) , and i'd be right back there.
Only Rosedale and Nyora going now I believe.

One of my mates dad was the Marshall at Rodedale. Andrew Parsons

Maybe the stars are aligning for us:

Getting the Hill that we thought we were getting (I think Hell needs his team mates to be doing what they need to do for us to see the best of him).

Having the way of the pace huffing and puffing Cordy that many of us witnessed at training, and when used up forward apart from one game was ineffectual, become a reliable Key Defender just when we needed one, and who has proven to be very good with his use of the ball. (Though be fair to Cordy, defense is where he has played most of his AFL career).

Max back and firing, PLUS kicking accurately. Membrey getting into the swing of things. Cooper "Delist" Sharman blending in perfectly giving us a good mix of three marking forward targets all with different strengths. Adding these to our small now gives us a very well balance forward line.

Wood over the knock he got earlier this season, and is back in town.

Roma looking to be moving more freely.

Nasiah, just get better and better.

And has Sincs somehow managed to go up yet another notch? Right now I think there is a case to say that he is THE best player in the competition.

Just need to get Steele back to being Steele again now.
From the stat's Steele did well.

Caminiti is more Membrey's competition IMO. Sharman has carved out a niche as a defensive forward who takes out the interceptor but hurts the other way. Taken some big scalps recently. Sicily, Vlastuin and now Stewart.

Did anyone else watching the telecast see Stewart after Sharman got that mark and goal say “nice grab mate”? Made me smile

I like the agro Caminiti brings but am happy with Sharman. No drama with making Caminiti bust a gut for his spot in the team.
And now he has a 3 year contract. Get him a pre season or two and he will overtake Membrey.

Like I've said before that was the highlight of the night for me, that was a great grab from Sharman, he came from a few deep to clunk that.

Not many forwards outmark Stewart either, he is one of the best intercept mark defenders in the business so for him to doff his cap says something.

Has Cairnsman admitted he was wrong yet?

I think even he has admitted defeat and started to get on the Sharman bandwagon.

I have been on it from Day 1 and RTB is on it now as he keeps picking him, he has talent, determination and belief in himself so what's not to like.

Came in for his debut, played a couple of games showing real promise and was dropped. Tried to be made into a defender and then wingman but is a natural forward. Going to be awesome for us for a long time touch wood.

Was driving up the west coast of Scotland during the game. Decided it would be too tense for both me and the passengers to keep in touch with the score. Got to Fort William for a cup of tea/coffee and got my phone out.

One of my English born sons had been watching and reckoned we were amazing. So I snuck a look at the score. All good. Decided the next leg I wouldn’t look at the score and really only knew the final score when we arrived at our destination. Relief from my Mrs as I was very cheery all afternoon despite Storm Betty battering us!

I’ve now watched it in it’s entirety and we were great. Should have won by more. So many plaudits to hand out. But the young guys again were the highlight for me. NWM, Windy, Michito great. Loved some of the Older guys too. Cordy a real old fashioned backman. Wood, Hill, Webster terrific. Marshall, Sinclair etc etc. Can’t think of a guy in the team to criticise.

Ross’s pressers a real treat. Love them. Hitting form at the right time. Kick straight, who knows!?

When I was a kid, dad said I had to follow St Kilda or find somewhere else to live

Have said the same thing to both of my kids when kindergarten age (distinctly remember my son coming home saying he was going to go for Collingwood he was told he was not and has stuck with the Saints since)

One who lives in Melbourne for Uni and she goes to Saints games, my son watches games with me. Character building they know what pain is and enjoy the wins and sense of hope.

Also dependent on the other finals. We probably need all 3 others at the G and us to have an interstate team.

How we played against Geelong is pretty much back to the way we played our first few rounds of the year.

I think we've moved to a much more free running open field style too on top of that. Early in the year we hugged the boundary so hard that you could work out where the ball would go before we kicked it. In the last few weeks we've flicked the switch and opened the field up. We are going straight up the middle when it's open. Looks like he was sharking playing one way but with an ace up his sleeve and now has us harder to predict heading for finals.

Yeh that was the big take away, the ball movement was really bold. Almost play on at all costs but we also seemed smart enough to keep Cordy and co looking for dinky ones and having Sincs biting off the tough kicks.

Really just smart footy.
