Great news, this. And this will be just the first of another 200+ games in the hoops for this lad. I believe he has what it takes, has totally earned his shot, and it's all onward and upward from here.

He looks a long way off it to me but you can't question his work rate and toughness. He gives me Atkins vibes where he doesn't have the tricks of the high draft picks but maybe with the right workrate and attitude he can overtake a lot of them in time.Well deserved. Of all the VFL games I've watched this year he has absolutely no qualms with getting his hands dirty and putting his head over the ball. Definitely earned his spot.
In a strange quirk of numerology, I'm figuring it's either #1 or #2.who is dropping out?
I'd add Rohan Marshall. Can dominate at centre bounce and forward and around the ground- like a mid.I'm thrilled to be getting a preview of Toby Conway rucking for Geelong at the conclusion of such a sobering year (no, I am not on the wagon; sadly I don't think I have watched a game this year without anaesthetising myself to one degree or another).
Been a big advocate of the club investing in the right young ruckman via the draft for a long time.
A lot of people argue that clubs are better off poaching a ready-made mature-ager from another club.
It's a specialist position, and whilst their aren't all that many 200+ cm kids who can run all day, are co-ordinated and can handle a 100kg opponents banging into you for 120 minutes, there are usually a pool of 20 or so likely lads who are all but interchangeable on their day.
There are only a handful of rucks that can potentially win you a match, though. And clubs hold onto those players whatever the cost.
Currently you've probably got Sean Darcy, Max Gawn, Tim English; all still at the clubs that drafted them.
I'd like to have seen more of Mitch Knevitt this season and I expect to see him play a bigger role in 2024.
I'll take away mixed emotions about Sam Menegola's time with the club; he was one of our best in the losing 2020 GF imo, and had a rather unique combination of attributes; huge tank, slow as treacle. Could take a casual overhead contested mark up on a wing or at half-back or even at half-forward with a certain nonchalance. Fancied a goal. The kicking was ambitious and he was often able to live up to his own image of himself.
I think a club like West Coast or North could do worse than consider Sam Menegola as a depth player; he is a consummate club man.
Looking forward to this game; I think we'll win.

I don't think he's retiring, actually. Sounds like he'd be keen for another shot at it if an offer came his way.Sam Menegola retiring as well?? Well... i step away from my outer for a couple of hours and things just happen. lol
Yeah the email from the club clearly saying it's his last cats game, not retiring.I don't think he's retiring, actually. Sounds like he'd be keen for another shot at it if an offer came his way.

What does 'still in it' mean?If we're still in it at half time, watch what happens in the 3rd quarter.

Great to see Stanley, Parfitt and Mullin getting farewell games. Thanks for the memories guys
After nearly two decades of this, I'm on with finishing as low as possible for once. Not real happy about some of the talk on here about wanting to finish as low as possible for draft picks.
Pride in the jumper, for even just one game, counts for far far more.
Smith should've come straight over the second he missed that after the siren shot in the 2016 QF. Ripping off his Hawthorn jumper to reveal a Hawthorn one underneath. Throw Cameron in 4 years earlier and it's likely that we'd have landed one of the 2019 or 2020 flags. Thanks Menegola and Smith for your service.
Sam was part of the initial 44 man AA squad in 2020, he and Guth was a big help for us to make the GF that year. Unlucky to miss the flag last year.
Smith, got us going in the granny along with the Hawk with those 2 first qtr goals. Wish we drafted him so we had him for longer.
Listening to Scott's press conference, does anyone else think he was wanting to say another name or two after thanking Isaac Smith & mentioning it as his farewell game
