Imagine if we actually win this. On paper, we look good.
Stanley KF, KB at times.
Libber back in is critical for them. He and Bont will have a party, but Macrae and Smith out is not ideal for them, even if Macrae has been struggling

There are other explanations
They could have marked his cards already in which case he’s gone and a debut is pointless.
Alternatively they like him and have already sat him down and encouraged him to work hard over the summer.
I think the latter is likely but agree it would have been great to select him - hard to argue with the line up though.
Hardie is an emergency so there’s still a slight chance he’ll play. He was picked ahead of Whyte, which suggests they haven’t put a line through him, but we’ll see.

I think six changes were enough and all the others were ahead of him for varying reasons.

Possibly Parf’s last chance to either demand he stay on our list or audition for another club (some may say it’s already beyond that, and it may be).

As long as we dont get annihilated ( no Geel supporter wants to see that ever ) and a few of the newer players show a glint of promise - then all is good

just saying, we still look ok on paper- Stanley being the critical IN. We could pinch this. Similarly, the Doggies could use this game to do damage in September.
I feel slightly more optimistic about this than I did about the Saints game

At exactly the right time, when finals were not up for grabs. Conway would've had his shot earlier if not for injury. Mullin got his shot earlier than warranted. Only Knevitt and potentially Dempsey you could argue could've had an extra few games each.
Yep, and I suspect the deal to get Mullin here had a couple of ones games guaranteed.

I like many others assumed Touhys time was probably up, so not playing or maybe the sub would suggest the club don't feel the same way?

They love him, they wouldn't not play him here then push him out the door, and it's just not the way they treat people or operate generally either.

The only thing im dissappointed in - is surely they could have given Mitch Hardie a game - even as sub

Very mean spirited - in fact they are miserable barstaards in a total dead rubber - not giving him a game - they bring him over mid season on a 6 mth contract - and there were earlier games - where Parfitt and a few others were sub - where Hardie could have been given a go

After what has happened to Zane Williams and now Mitch Hardie - the next player Geel picks mid season - i hope he tells the Cats - to shove it up their aarse
Yeah maybe I would not be quite so harsh as you, but agree he coulda been given a shot

Wasn't chappy sub in he's 250th.?

I doubt 2E gets a contract next year.

He didn't deserve a game. If they saw the talent they thought and like his attitude then he'll get a contract for next year but his VFL performances definitely didn't demand selection.

People questioning Touhy being sub as a sign he will play on
Maybe his body is cooked and it’s the only way he can play if it’s for a short period.
Better to play till the end of the game than play and get subbed off.

I will add I’m in the camp of he will play on after seeing him named sub

Interesting how we are all a little bit or a lot excited for this round.

Pressure of a shit year is off us and everyone in the Club, so let's see some of the up and comers, and hopefully a few glimmers, And also honour a few (4 I reckon) of the best 25 who will be retiring or moving on.

Really, a great end to our year, and **** what any other team's supporters think. WE are the reigning premiers ffs.

Agreed. Zero stress on Saturday night

RE: Tuohy, it was reported during the week that he’s in negotiation with the club on a one year deal.

With no retirement announcement and not being named in the 22, it seems clear to me that he’s playing on and Saturday is no farewell.

Can't see him playing every game ...

I also understand they are worried about home sickness. We shouldn’t underestimate how hard it is for a kid that far from home playing in the 2s. This might be partly a strategy to make him feel like it is worth coming back next year

BIG TOBY IS IN.
All is good in the world 🌎.
Up against one of the best Ruckman in English.
How else do you find out the benchmarks before a big preseason then going up against English.

If English smashes him, he sees the gulf and works hard in preseason and VFL next season to get up to the level.

But if he matches or beats English, he rolls into a preseason confident, ready to work hard and knows he can do it against the best.

And if he is brittle, Geelong learn they need another ruck for insurance.

Theres no downside to playing him.

And Stanley is selected and will help him out

I'm thrilled to be getting a preview of Toby Conway rucking for Geelong at the conclusion of such a sobering year (no, I am not on the wagon; sadly I don't think I have watched a game this year without anaesthetising myself to one degree or another).

Been a big advocate of the club investing in the right young ruckman via the draft for a long time.
A lot of people argue that clubs are better off poaching a ready-made mature-ager from another club.
It's a specialist position, and whilst their aren't all that many 200+ cm kids who can run all day, are co-ordinated and can handle a 100kg opponents banging into you for 120 minutes, there are usually a pool of 20 or so likely lads who are all but interchangeable on their day.

There are only a handful of rucks that can potentially win you a match, though. And clubs hold onto those players whatever the cost.
Currently you've probably got Sean Darcy, Max Gawn, Tim English; all still at the clubs that drafted them.

I'd like to have seen more of Mitch Knevitt this season and I expect to see him play a bigger role in 2024.

I'll take away mixed emotions about Sam Menegola's time with the club; he was one of our best in the losing 2020 GF imo, and had a rather unique combination of attributes; huge tank, slow as treacle. Could take a casual overhead contested mark up on a wing or at half-back or even at half-forward with a certain nonchalance. Fancied a goal. The kicking was ambitious and he was often able to live up to his own image of himself.
I think a club like West Coast or North could do worse than consider Sam Menegola as a depth player; he is a consummate club man.

Looking forward to this game; I think we'll win.
