****ing Round 2 bye... kill me now.
Momentum killer this bye.. really poor timing for us. A stop start stop start to the year, i hope the players are taking it in their stride. Melbourne looked very impressive against GWS, they probably are rivalling us for midfield depth, will be a fantastic match up.

Surprised at the lack of talk regarding Ballard.

Hopefully Adam Tomlinson is still available, in the event it's worst case scenario - the club had apparently already strongly considered signing him during the off-season last year.

Yeah, even if Ballard is out for an extended time (hopefully not, but signs aren’t looking good) we still have Collins and Mac. Two KPD is pretty normal.

Add Jeffrey as a medium tall with Powell as interceptor, and can even swing Read back if need be. Or Even Himmelberg…

Not panic stations yet, but it is a bit of a worry.

Ballard looked even broader across his chest to me. Seems like he got a bit bigger and stronger again this off season.
Big loss as he can intercept but he can also just play accountable with no ego.

Whilst Andrew is a gun, he doesn't play the same as Ballard.
Don't think we can go anywhere with Collins and C.Graham in the team.

I just don't want to believe its an ACL. He didn't even seem that impaired
Usually guys are rolling on the ground for 20 seconds before getting up and walking off.

Ballard news confirmed sadly. He would’ve played on Fritsch probably also. So now that will be Uwland

Aidan Johnson offered once match. I’d assume Melbourne would bring him straight back in against us. Leaving Johnson, Jefferson, Van Rooyen again. All 193+

I think we give Caleb Graham a shot in a 3 key defender backline system. He got thrown into it by Dew because we needed him. He’s had an awesome 2 years in the vfl. Far better player at 24 than he was at 20 (if it doesn’t work, Jeffrey did do a lot more lockdown work pre season for a reason. Now we might need it)
If we do pick CGraham, it becomes a real squeeze for spots assuming everyone else is fit

That sucks for Ballard.

But there is no way I would play C. Graham.

Just run with two key defenders and see how we go. Most teams only run two genuine tall forwards and a resting ruck anyway, so they also usually only run two key defenders.

We’re a bit of an anomaly in that regard, playing three tall forwards and three tall backs whenever possible.

I get why we play Collins, Ballard and Mac, as they are all best 22 every day of the week. But I’d rather change our structure a bit than bring in a sub-par player.

All the best to Ballard. Just devastating news.

Ballard struggled last year with Mac and Collins all together. He was way better on Sun with only Collins and then Jeffrey, Powell, Uwland. I suspect Collins and Mac with players above will work also well. I actually preferred this combination before season started. If Collins, Andrew missing then C Graham in or Read will move back. Caleb is not star but can do a job.

I thought Jeffrey did great job on Sun. Some great ball movement, deliveries. Andrew will only add to rebound, good ball use. Suddenly we look different with Rioli, Noble. Players stand taller with them. Weller another great ball user. Rogers too. Very confident when he has set shot. The same W Graham.

Watch out Demons (if we bring the same effort), haha.

Horrible news for Ballard. Not many can park themselves where the ball is going to go like he can.

While I would be interested in seeing how much Crab has developed since he was last in, I think we will see more a team defence setup first to try and free Mac up. And as others have said, Crab is purely a Collins lock down replacement.

Between Jeffrey, Uwland and Powell we have options to rotate through the 3 tall minutes without giving up much in rebounding, assuming we aren’t letting them run through the middle unopposed. They are all also great at running off their man to intercept as well. It also makes us quicker and more dangerous on the turnover.

If we start to let the talls get on top of those 3, we can always pull the Graham trigger later.

My main reason for bringing Graham in, it is absolutely not that I don't trust Macs ability to defend man on man, I just feel he is far too valuable as a loose, interceptor, to play a lock down roll.
Do we often play with an additional behind the ball anyway? For patches in most games we do. But I don’t think routinely.

I dont think any opposition coach would allow Mac to be the free guy in any case.

They would roll a mid sized defensive type forward ala nick Holman up onto him leaving a Bodhi / Powell to be the spare. I don’t like when we’ve tried to play Mac on shorter forwards in the past..
