If i was a lions supporter I wouldn't be very proud of this win. They're lucky collingwood couldn't convert set shots into goals. If they did collingwood would've won.

This is such a bad take. I actually just posted about this on the mainboard.

Because of the way Collingwood play they are going to be one of the highest variance scoring teams in the comp. I think that will be especially the case against better opposition. Brisbane would be happy with Collingwood taking shots in the manner they did last night because a lot of them were low probability. Sometimes the variance will work in their favour but other times it won't and they will rack up behinds like nobodies business.

Looking at the number of scoring shots of a team is like counting number of putts as a meaningful stat. Waste of time and doesn't tell the story.

Meh, I’d rather be 6 goals up and BT cheer on Collingwood than be 6 goals down and BT cheer on Collingwood.

Besides the point. The AFL is meant to be the biggest sport in the country yet last night it's broadcast team was bush league. It's not good enough. Same would be said if it were Brisbane not Collingwood he were cheering for.

I get your point, I just didn’t care when we were 6 goals up. I’ve got no doubt he’d have been barracking for them to win by 10 goals had they been 6 goals up, and that would have shit me.

Last night was BT’s “Jumped The Shark” moment - with the retirement of Bruce, 7 are lost for a replacement. Hudson would appear to be the logical replacement but instead they’ve gonr for a half man / half cartoon character who got high on his own publicity a long time ago

When you get in a slot on commercial TV you become the product and whether you're insightful ( unlikely) or not it's what the majority of punters associate with the product.

Bug eyed Brayshaw dredges up every bogan cliche ever been known to man or woman as his comment on the state of the game which many of the people watching can identify with and BT goes off half nuts from time to time over nothing and trades on hyperbole bringing excitement to the commentary.

No sane intelligent person could put up with it for more than 5 minutes but then a lot of your viewing base wouldn't fall in to that category.

He’s a radio caller - a latter day mutant of Rex Hunt - you either like it or you don’t, but that’s what the radio dial is for you have options

He‘s only on TV because of the cricket

Fantastic summary.

If I was a port supporter I’d be worried about the absolute mediocrity that your sh*thouse club dishes up year after year.

You’ve got a clown as your club president and won’t make finals this year.

I rewatched the replay and McCarthy was incredible in his forward pressure. Especially when the ball out in the open he managed to keep Collingwood from gaining possession and starting a chain.

On another note Gunston was much more visible on reply than at the ground.

I think they’re just big names being role players. The only downside is that they are up there in age.

At the ground we noticed just how much running Gunston did across the game without any reward.

In the last quarter on 2 of the kick outs he worked from the opposite side of the ground to be a down the line option.

You can’t beat being at the ground to get that perspective - off the TV I hardly knew he played 👍

Feeling a bit of Hunters & Collectors (can't believe one of the lads doesn't have this for their goal song!)

I'm referring to the number of times Collingwood got the ball in wide open space in the middle of the ground... And didn't know what to do. This is proving to be a real battle between my emotional brain and my logical brain, and looking at the game day thread it seems like I'm far from alone.

My emotional brain is gearing up for us to be completely ripped to shreds once our opposition even so much as enters the centre square or crosses the wing, just like last year. But my logical brain forces me to momentarily take my eyes off the ball carrier and I come to the realisation that "we're actually quite well set up here, even tho the amount of space we're giving them is unnerving".

This is why martinson and others are seeing comments like this from the experts (who don't watch us as often as we do):

The "experts" are expecting more of last year's stuff from us, not seeing it, and getting confused. I'd be very clear on this: THEY'RE confused. Our guys look pretty clear on their roles to me, much clearer than last year. I think the media are gradually cottoning onto the fact we look a bit different in attack (more on that below), but the reason we look different in attack is because of the way we're defending: it's laying the foundation for our ball use. And nobody in the media has really noticed this yet, or if they have, they're yet to make a big deal out of it.

I guess the only concern on our defence is the fact that I think the game pretty much went how we wanted it to go, certainly after quarter time... Yet Collingwood still had 28 scoring shots. Those expected score stats are interesting tho... It indicates Collingwood's shots were for the most part quite difficult, so that is at least partly attributable to our defensive setup.

What is more interesting tho, and what I'm having trouble reconciling, is how we looked so solid (compared to last year) behind the ball, while still being able to challenge Collingwood's handball-happy nature around the contest. My simpleton thinking is that it's possible to do one or the other, but not both at once, so the fact we were able to pull this off is a great tribute to both the coaching group for devising the plan, and the players for executing it.

Up forward, I don't need to add anything more about Joe and Eric's game. Only thing I would say is that while Charlie and Cam get all the plaudits, they ain't doing diddly squat without the impact Joe and Eric had. Big men play big roles in big games, and quite frankly, both could have kicked 0 goals last night and still been among our best, such was their impact in contests.

The challenge for both of them now is to bring that intensity and commitment weekly, and for me the jury remains out on whether we'll see that. I've touched on this before, but the media also brought it up during the week... They're both so physically slight for tall men... Can they play that bash and crash competing style every week? I'm not so sure but would love to be proven wrong.

Other positive signs I won't go into chapter and verse on: we're now holding a tall forward deep far more often than in the past, and we look far more dangerous as a result. Perhaps the club finally found my forward line manifesto: How do we take the next step to a premiership?. And we won scores from turnover, despite having less actual intercepts... Massive difference from last week and showed we had learnt from the Bulldogs game.

Jarrod Berry has commented since the match about how we want to be the hunter not the hunted. This is much easier to do against the likes of Melbourne and Collingwood, who backed their system and played how we thought they were gonna play. North will be a completely different story. Clarko will, as he always does, have plenty up his sleeve, and next Saturday I expect we will have to be ready to adapt on the fly. That's the next challenge.

One final thing to finish... If there are indeed some "rumblings" of discontent, the playing group is doing a bloody good job of hiding them, and this view isn't results-biased; I thought the same last week. They look pretty committed to me at the moment.

Great to see kick to kick make its overdue return last night 🙂

Sorry for intrusion, just want to say that one of my favourite bits of the game was how relaxed Charlie Cameron was in singing his song.
Of course another favourite bit was the final scoreline, great win guys. 👏

Those two songs are hard work . . . . west Virginia, Queensland. What we need is for Clugg to step up and become a goal kicker. And his song needs to be changed to Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden. As in 6 . . .6, 6 . . .the number of the beast. That'll get things rocking at the gabba!!

Obviously it’s good to get a win against Collingwood, but there were still signs I was pretty concerned with.

Particularly how easily Ash Johnson was picking off our kick ins down the line, in front of Oscar.

He continually came in from behind or the side as the third man, and we never put a body on him.

We were somewhat lucky that Collingwood were rather inaccurate during our run of goals, because they missed quite a few getable set shots they normally wouldn’t have.

Definitely remember Elliot missing one I thought he would nail, and I think it might have been Hill who missed a similar shot.

We genuinely need to work on our kick ins up the line, so we’re not turning it over for repeat entries.

Yer the bolded was frustrating me on the night, Johnson a very athletic type though.

Missing gettable set shots is something that happens in every game to all teams, eg. we missed a couple of easy shots as well, Hippy missed an absolute dolly 20-25 meters out straight in front.

We just got to hope the opposition doesn't shoot the lights out in a big finals game.

I was getting frustrated because he wasn't actually a free man at any of the ones I saw. In general he had someone with him but they just didn't engage before the contest, allowing him a free run at it. Easily assessable at least.

I remember the Elliot one but the statistics being mentioned looks across the game as a whole - a couple of Mihochek 's kicks, for example, had no business going through. You miss some and you get some.

Most of Ash Johnson’s marks did come in the last quarter when we were trying to flow it down so I’m not too worried although it’s another sign of fatigue imoacting Oscar when rucking solo

I think the scoreboard flattered us a little but it was still a very good win against the form team, moreso when considering our form

Also, the style they play is the exact game that usually gets a hold of us

Shame we’re playing them at Marvel later in the year and don’t get to test ourselves against them at the G

Would rate us a better chance of beating them at Marvel than at the G.
But it is terrible scheduling by the AFL to have that game at Marvel, could be the game of the round.
