We don't have:
1. The players
2. The ability to execute a game plan, or
3. The umpires

to get anywhere near winning this.

Todays Training Report by HKTigerB (PRE)

Dropped in this morning to watch 2 x 20+ minute stints. (Forgot to close the back car door and got yelled at by the car.)

Rehab:
  • Josh G and "The Tap" walking laps. Josh G. stopped and chatted. Is up, ahead of schedule and bouncy. Loves BC's.
  • Tom L and Jacob B doing slow run throughs. Tom looking positive.
  • Jayden doing 3/4 pace 100 meter run throughs. Had a set number he had to do and just motored through them.
  • James T and Noah B doing 80% to 100% run throughs. 75 metre and 100 metre. All straight line. Noah still favouring a leg at times (not the taped up one). James T going pretty much flat out.
  • Dion did at least some of the main training, the non-contact stuff, and then did run throughs.

Training
  • Watched 3 separate drills. Skills and overlap running was the focus. Everybody heavily engaged and running/working hard. The guys looked very bouncy.
  • No real stand outs. Skills were a focus especially on 30 to 40 meter kicks.
  • Forward entry followed by a shot for goal was also a key focus.
  • Oliver Hayes Brown was out there.

Things I did notice:
  • In one contested mark situation Tom B. bodied up well and out marked Ben Miller. Ben was unimpressed.
  • Noah C. heavily involved and getting lots of support.
  • MJR took a number of strong overhead marks and also focussed on set shot goal kicking between drills.
  • Mykelti acts more like he belongs and is louder and demanding the ball.
  • Matt C. has sublime kicking skills.

Ohh forgot to add, whilst Jacob H was taped up it didn't look that much and he was heavily involved and working hard.

Dylan did all the training I saw.

In one drill he ended up as the forward taking a mark at about the 45 on a 45 degree angle. Morro the coach yells out "Take the shot". Dylan obliges. Noah B provides running commentary from about 10 meters away giving Dylan heaps. Grimesy slots the goal and pays Noah back in spades.

The above just highlighted to me how up and bouncy the guys were. Focused on good, skilled training, but still having fun and some good banter.

when we field a full strength side in round 22 the competition better look out.

Our tough start to the season continues this week as we front up against the Demons in the traditional ANZAC Eve game. The Demons who were poor in their last outing against the Lions will be looking at bouncing back, while we continue to battle an unprecedented injury crisis that currently sees us with 30 fit players to choose from and while we will possibly be getting Hopper & Grimes back this week, we've lost Short to yet another injury, so it's 2 steps forward and 1 step back. Meanwhile, Melbourne is at close to full strength with Salem the only best 23 player that is missing after he injured a hamstring last game and will be eager to get back on the winners list.

Hopefully we can return to playing in the manner that we were playing against Carlton Port & Sydney, where we were able to be right in the games for the majority of the game due to our pressure and ability to execute the game plan. The issue though is that over the last couple of games against the Saints & Eagles we've only really been able to manage to do that for about a quarter before the opposition have been able to wrestle control away from us and then dominate the remainder of the game. If we do that against the Demons on Wednesday night this game has the potential to become quite ugly on the scoreboard as the Demons are a much better level of opponent that the Saints & Eagles were.

In terms of selection the Tigers are hopeful to see the return of Hopper and Grimes to give us a boost of experience, but it's still going to be a relatively young line up that takes the field against the Dees even with those returns. The benefit that we're getting from the current injury crisis is that we're getting an extended look at the kids and are starting to see some promising signs from a few of them as players we're looking to be part of the future.

Line Up
Out: Short(inj) Pickett McIntosh
In: Grimes Hopper Ryan

B: Brown Miller Young
HB: Vlastuin D.Rioli Broad
C: Campbell Hopper Ralphsmith
HF: Mansell Bolton M.Rioli
F: Lefau Martin Koschitzke
R: Nankervis Baker Dow
INT: McAuliffe Graham Ryan Grimes
SUB: Sonsie

I'd like to see us embrace the opportunity to put development time into the kids and with Hopper and Grimes coming back into the line up, I'd send McIntosh & Pickett back the VFL to find some form, while giving young guys like Ralphsmith & Campbell an opportunity on the wings to see what they offer. Campbell has played some wing time already this season and his ability to cover plenty of ground shouldn't hurt us too badly, he also has better composure and ball use than both Pickett and McIntosh, while Ralphsmith is in a now or never moment of his career and needs to show something, so I'd be giving him that opportunity in a game where we're unlikely to get the win anyway, at least then you'll know what he is able to bring to the side moving forward. With the Dees having 3 talls down back I feel we need to bring in Ryan, who has been in good form the last 2 games at VFL level, to play forward & support Nankervis in the ruck. Also gives us another marking option up forward so that the Dees can't just intercept mark at will in their D50.

Prediction:
As mentioned this is going to be tough for us to get close to the Demons given the injury crisis we're in and anything under a 6 goal loss would be as good as a win IMO. What's more important than the margin, though is that we see the same level of effort & intensity that we saw during the 3 games against Carlton Port & Sydney. If we bring that we'll at least make the Demons earn the win. We can't get into the habit of just letting teams just run over the top of us, as it can be a difficult rut to climb out of.

Love the optimism, but there’s more chance of Jamie Kah not being able to secure a single ride at Flemington on Thursday than McIntosh and Pickett getting dropped!

I’ll donate $1000 to the grandstand redevelopment if one of them gets dropped and $3000 if both do 👍

Well considering our outs it would be pretty silly to drop them

Time to unleash the cumbo train.
I think it's time to bring Cumberland and Naismith in for Kosi and Campbell.
Naismith can play deep and is the get out of jail high ball when needed. Rather Ryan but Naismith better against Gawn.

Campbell had 4 poss, in the first Q, then 4 for the rest of the match, 1 contested possession all up. He has been great and looks a player, but I think a few games in the midfield/forward in the VFL is needed. Needs to get his hands on it. Cumberland would also give us a more scoring power.

Need to be proactive at this stage of the season.

naimsmith in to beat down on wanka gawn with nank

ryan permanent full forward or swapping with naimsmith every now and then

if we play nank alone on gawn we are already 10 goals down

Dees will be up comfortably by half time. Their midfield power will be too much, especially without Prestia and Taranto and the bigger bodies in there.

Well, we've seen how to beat gawn. You hit him hard all day every single time and gradually wear him down. So I'd like to see nank and the second ruck do it all day long and set the tone. Naismith would be our best number 2 ruck by a mile in my opinion, but i guess it remains to be seen who it ends up being.
