Game Day Round 7: West Coast Vs Port Adelaide

Hopefully their second week in a row travelling will equal out our six day break.

Hopefully it counters us playing a pretty tough Derby.

"We couldn't research a team any more than we have West Coast," Power senior assistant coach Matthew Nicks told reporters on Monday.

"When you lose games like we have to them by small margins in the past couple years, where you dominate a lot of the statistics, you find yourself really getting deep into how are going to knock this side off.

"We feel we know them really well, we just have to perform on the game day.

"I hope our guys are hungry because they finished our season last year.

"A lot of talk has been about us not being able to knock off top-eight sides, so we want to do another one this week."

Looks like they'll be throwing everything they've got at us, easily our biggest test since Round 1.

Should be a good game. Both teams are better than current ladder positions would suggest. ;)

Redden vs Rockliff this week may be an interesting dual if he comes in as expected- Hopedully Redden can back up this weeks good game against another quality midfield.

We can’t rest on any laurels whatsoever. Port lose this and they will be right back in the pack. They won’t allow us to get 5 goals up like in the final so we will need to be prepared to grind this out & use our advantages in the crowd, running power and forward line to get the job done.

The trip from adelaide to Melbourne and back is not worthy of mention, maximum 1 hour, on good days you get there in 45 minutes. geelong would travel for longer to play at the G or etihad

Not even nearly the same.

Even a 1 hour flight still requires flying out the day before, staying overnight and the physical drain of a flight (being in a low pressure space, breathing recycled air). A 45 minute flight might be about the shortest you can get but it's not even on the same page as a bus ride.

Pretty different team to last year. Younger, quicker, and our rucks are back. They’re kidding themselves if they think it’s going to be similar to last year where they dominate all the stats. Doesn’t bode well for them if they were struggling to beat us last year, now they have the added factor of us getting it i50 an extra 15-20 times. Could be a bit of a shootout, Port won’t park the bus like the previous two so there will be plenty of space.

Another thing I noticed was that WC and Port are 1 and 2 for the least turnovers per game, also Port being the best clearance team. Will be an interesting game since those two stats are generally our strengths and weaknesses respectively, for getting the ball. Going to need a pretty similar derby midfield performance.

Agreed, but I think it'd be this years games that they'd be focusing on.

Interesting stats at the end there, especially considering how many of our scores came from turnovers on the W/E.

Changes from the Elimination final (assuming Nelson for Jetta and guessing on Port's changes):

Eagles:
Nelson for Mackenzie
Cole for Hutchings
Naitanui for Vardy
Lycett for Petrie
Waterman for Hutchings
Masten for Priddis
Rioli for Mitchell
Petrucelle for Partington

A fair bit more speed overall.

Port guess:
Watts for Marshall
Motlop for Impey
Bonner for Hartlett
Hombsch for Wingard

Irrational Comment
Optus is dimensionally different to Subi and our players will develop modified habits that will help us over time at home and in melbourne

But the atmosphere - surely this is a positive in terms of preparing players to be accustom to big away games. Particularly the Derby for example it could have been an interstate final with the crowd etc. Great preparation

One of them is Jetta.

I must have got them mixed up given they both have elite speed, what with Hutch running a 2.80 and all.

Hutch for Cole probably negates all the other speedy inclusions.
Can't 100% confirm but surely Hutch is in the top 3 quickest players at west coast ? maybe even top 5 in the league

There's no senior players to squeeze him out. His only opposition is Jackson Nelson and Maybe Schofield if we go with a three tall backline but i doubt it will be a regular thing.
He will stay unless injured. Really starting to come good.

Id like to see him played as a defensive forward. Think he would do well there, flexible player.
Cheers guys much appreciated. I have decided to select the awesome and lovable T.Cole to my Supercoach team. I wish him and the Eagles all the best for at least 11 weeks.

When is L Ryan due back? That kid is on another level, great set of skills and fun to watch.

I mean Schoey is pretty mobile and matches up on Dixon, but would 3 talls expose us at ground level? There's definitely a case for giving Barrass a rest and bringing in Nelson for extra grunt, but it comes with the risk of destabilising a settled backline.
