Battling with Linc - who was really flat last night. Not sure where he is at right now.
It is completely understandable for Linc having a down game after being bashed from pillar to post last week.

At the game one thing you realise that you don’t see watching tv is closing speed and pressure. I know answerth and sharpe aren’t silky and make mistakes - but their attach and closing speed and pace is something that was really impressive last night and helped us out so much. For me answerth must stay in I think he adds a hardness and intensity to the contest that is really important

A win in Melbourne .. against the Blues !! Their fans turn so quickly. It's delicious. There was an actual crush for the exit @ 3/4 time. Like 2003 GF !
That’s because they went into that game with genuine thoughts that they could win it.
Too much listening to the media hype about their team that is middling at best atm.

I don't get why are some are going so hard on Sharp. He did what he was required to do in his 1st game for quite some time. A big game on the big Friday night stage. Got better as the game went on. Ran hard and filled a lot of holes. Played better than Willmott and that is not having a go at Willmott but cos he ain't a love child he is unfairly reviewed.

Give it a break guys & gals, why does there always have to be a pile on when your preferred player/s don't get picked.

He gave away two HTB’s in the first and I feel like that had a lot of impact on how people perceived his game (including mine). They were silly mistakes but he picked it up in the second half and helped create a Cameron goal and got a goal himself with hard running.

I’m impartial to whether he is omitted. I can’t fault if they go with someone else next week but also can’t fault if they gave him another game.

His 2 early htb incidents were imo more to do with getting used to the differences in the speed of the game between playing 1s vs 2s. Played ok after that.

It's amusing reading the comments bagging Sharp and Answerth for bad decisions and poor disposal - especially given it was Sharps first game for the year - and on the big stage.

Did you not see Rayner butcher multiple plays? Or Hugh kick straight to the opposition? Or Dunks mis-kick to Andrews? Or Oscar miss mark after mark. The list goes on...

The scrutiny on new players is always high but seriously? We often say we don't have enough role players... well these 2 guys are workhorses who bust their guts every time they get a chance. What you get is 100% effort 100% of the time. That alone is a hugely underrated trait in a team that still has lapses.

I'm more than happy to give them time to solidify and grow in confidence just like we've been forced to do with Payne who now shows the rewards of consistency. Given the outs of Rich and Zorko the opportunity is a win win.

we now have one player atleast, run in with intent to tackle allowing others to stay on their man giving the player with the ball no outlet or a highly pressured outlet which is creating turnovers and we are a much better team as a result.
Well done to the coaches for instilling this mindset in the team throughout the off season the midfield and forward units are now playing as a team.

We picked up on the changes through the pre-season games but now the full intent is there and it is working.

Different sport, but the principle is exactly the same and this makes it very graphic what we're trying to do this season vs other seasons where we've all rushed the ball carrier, like this chap did here 😬

Just as a side note Fages seems to get really stressed in the box. Sometimes I thought he's really going to blow his top. Looked about to explode.

Maybe for his own sanity he's better off on the bench where he can engage with players and have something to do rather than think.

Fagan is trying to make the team self reliant. Example last weekend three quarter time he asked the players what was needed instead of telling them.

I think that is a critical component of premiership teams. They need to be able to adjust the levers on the field as the game is happening.

Taking his hands off the levers is the stressful thing, not being in the box.

Very much agree with this. I think the extra layer of abstraction from the game that comes with the coaching box makes him feel utterly powerless and frustrated. I get he probably wants to team to develop more autonomy on field but I honestly worry for his health in the box. You can see the stress fumes coming off his body.
I have a bit of an alternate take on this.

When you coach from the sideline (as I have done in a different sport), you have to be mindful of controlling your own emotions, or at least, and perhaps more importantly, your players' perceptions of your emotions. The players quite often pick up on your state of mind, even subconsciously, so if you are losing the plot on the bench, pretty quickly they will as well out on the field.

So I would imagine that a lot of the time when Fages was on the bench, he was actually experiencing a lot of the same emotions he's experiencing now. The difference was he usually had to keep them all bottled up when he was on the bench. This often came across I think by him looking very pensive and/or stern.

But now he's able to let all those emotions out in the moment, without having them build up inside him. I think this might actually be healthier for him.

Still in awe of Dunkley's game last night. I knew we were getting a talent but he carried our midfield last night. Lachie and Ashcroft had quieter games and Dunks did it all with Cripps being carried around on his back... just incredible.

Same with Payne. I 100% had my doubts that he would make it, but if plays 75% of that game every game he's in AA form. I just can't remember a game where 2 players just keep coming to front of mind like those 2.

I was initially annoyed with the 4th but on reflection I still think we have a few players finding form, so a win like that is a confidence booster for the boys. It hurts my heart to see Clugg lose his mojo but he's just working his way through it, along with Starc who coming good too, Bails is finding his groove again.

We won through effort last night. It's been a while since you could say that without getting a few raised eyebrows.

I still think Kiddy isn't quite fit enough yet. He definitely drops off late in games and can't quite keep it up. If he wants to go to the next level he needs to run out games better. The talent is there already
Agree he does seem to fatigue before others, maybe it's just his laconic ways but he cramped quite early last night and it wasn't a game in sweltering heat.

I have to lock the house watching the TV in fear of the neighbours calling the police to report a murder so I feel his pain completely.

To be honest I actually like seeing his range of emotion... I think there was a lot who seemed to think he was too calm, too level and not passionate enough but those images make a lie out of that misconception.

Ah footy... You know you're passionate when it gives you a heart attack.

Payne's big size and stature has reminded me of someone for a while but last night I realised who .. Mal Micheal

..Just has that imposing solid presence about him, brick wall effect, like Mal did.

Neither Adams or Gardiner do.....Adams is solid but different.
I've been a Payne fan since his very first match for us which was a practice match at Burpengary against the Swans in his draft year. He threw Buddy Franklin on his back and I can tell you Payne was a giant back then. I went to a Lions function the next year when Payne was out with shin splints and on crutches and even bent over on crutches he was as big and even wider than Matty Eagles. The thing about Payne is how quick he is, he was a champion discus thrower in junior sports so you could assume he is pretty quick on his feet and well balanced. He also has that mongrel in him, hates being beaten, just hates it. The other thing i like about him is that he listens, seems to always be learning and very humble.

Please REALLY do you know what it takes to play with the pressure and intensity we've been playing with of late...pretty sure we are one of the fittest teams going around.

Totally agree - it's not a physical thing. Three hours of fierce concentration and reacting is exhausting.

We used to hold concentration for short bursts , then we built to quarter, then a couple of quarters, and now we are going till we think the game is done.

You can't train that kind of mental effort but playing against good opposition does.
Carlton kept us focused for 3/4.

This is why top teams need hard fixtures - need as much mental practice as possible.

I thought Freo played better against us last week then Carlton did last night

Freo were as bad as carlton were in a different way. At least to their credit they tried to change up their ball movement and move it quickly by hand, but it just lead to turnovers deep in their defence. Carlton chipped it around with it going nowhere then either stuffed it up, or kicked to a contest which we won or at least caused a stoppage from.

Take away the Dunks kick and kick the ones we should have and it would've been a huge win

Really dominated them

We somehow managed to kick one behind in the first 10 minutes out of charlie and Gunston having shots from a combined 2m out from goal.

..haha, I'm now the same. Mr MM was able to keep me under control, tell me they can't hear you MM settle down etc...but now there's nothing to stop me

unfortunately, so I'm finding myself totally out of control, yelling at the tv when we stuff up, yelling when we do something magical or singing Country Road at the top of my voice...oh dear, it's a worry for me and the neighbours:)

...so yep, we know how he feels;)

I think all of our players have been busting their guts of late . If you have workhorses you need them to bust their guts and generally not stuff up when they do get it . I say that without comment on last night. Likewise if you get it fairly often and are in and under mistakes are part of your game usually.

Rayner was terrible last night . Every time he tried to get in to the play he zagged the wrong way . It happens sometimes.

Re Payne we should've been playing him consistently ages ago as some on this thread have been harping about . His upside was self evident.

He monstered Curnow last night in one on ones and without jumping the gun or getting over excited there is the potential there to have a special player.
