Did anyone else hear (Carey I think) get asked a question about Brisbanes form and he said "oh well I haven't seen them every week".

Are commentators seriously not watching the bookies flag favourite every week? Surely that's a requirement of your job? How these guys keep their job completely baffles me sometimes.

Give the poor lads a break - I mean there are nine games *every* week and you have to like take notes and stuff so you have something relevant to say (unless you waffle on about past glories or random generics or narrative of the week etc), and pay attention to the development of players/teams/coaches and how that interacts with the same every adjusting matrix against their next game's opponent (unless you waffle on about past glories or random generics or narrative of the week etc), and keep up with the rules changes for this quarter/half/game/day/week/since you played so you can make insightful tactical commentary and how the setup a team is using takes advantage of their strengths of the opponents weaknesses (unless you waffle on about past glories or random generics or narrative of the week etc), be aware of the varying supporter bases and demographics listening to your broadcast so you can adjust your delivery based on the needs and interests of your client base (unless you waffle on about past glories or random generics or narrative of the week etc).

Worse than that people expect you to get the players names mostly right most of the time ... especially if you alternate specialist commentary skill is simply saying the name of each player that touches the ball without adding any actual meaning or content in the process.

Have you noticed (it might be just me going on my own feelings here) that the players playing for Brisbane that the commentators *do* get excited about all tend to be players that they got to know when they were playing for other clubs ... eg would Charlie Cameron get the same props if he had been a Lion from draft day?

Come on. Wayne Carey's a busy man. He has no room for distractions. Between his commitments on Talking Footy, writing about footy for Fairfax and a betting company, commentating footy on the radio and TV, there's simply no chance to stay up to speed with frivolous things like footy.

Duck is a good analyst, one of the better ones, but I thought he was embarrassed by Hodge on a couple of occasions last night.

He's also a terrible human being and shouldn't be on television - but that's a discussion for another day.

We know how good they were but have to say Witherdon and Answorth were absolutely bloody fantastic! Everyone says players can always improve, but Alex and Noah's games were almost faultless.
Shows how hard the boys who have not been getting a game in the seniors have been working, both on their fitness and skills, it's a credit to the rehab/conditioning/coaching staff and the boys themselves, gives me great confidence that anyone that comes in will be ready to go.

Well said.

I'm also glad Witho managed to make the most out of his opportunity.

Watching again now. Just finished the first quarter. Might skip the second & go straight to the third lol.

Some really simple set shots missed, still disappointing. I'll bet my lefty that if Linc hadn't gone off with the blood rule that would've been another goal too.

The second was actually pretty good contest wise - as far as one goal quarters go it wasn't bad.

Harsh.

If everyone who made life mistakes was banned from TV, we'd end up staring at the Test Pattern 24/7

Have you seen the list of things he's done? If not, you should research it. Spoilers include: sexual assault, glassing a woman, assaulting cops, being involved with bikies.

If all he'd done was sleep with his teammates wife, I'd be willing to put that down to a mistake and one he could move on from.

I've seen his rap sheet. As with many high profile personalities, drugs and alcohol abuse more often than not derail their lives.

As far as I know, he's been clean since 2008.

Maybe I'm naiive but I've always believed that people deserve another chance if they make a genuine effort to rehabilitate themselves,

Banning someone like Carey from earning a living through the media would seem counter productive to me.

Another chance is one thing, but for a guy with such a substantial rap sheet, he has spent his chances time and time again. I don't care if he's a good footballer, we shouldn't be rewarding criminals with jobs in the media.

Also, he's a terrible analyst.

That the networks think you have to be a champion player to be an adequate special comments commentator is laughable. How often do champion players become good coaches?

I thought Hodge blew him out of the water - you could tell he watches football unlike Carey who openly admitted he hasn't watched the Lions play much. The guy is a joke.

Cameron fined for rough conduct when he bumped into the Essendon player. Didn't think it was high but might need to have another look.

It's not for that incident on the wing in the first quarter when he checked on the player, is it? That is crazy, if so.

There are life mistakes and then there is domestic violence, indecent assault, Assaulting multiple partners and police, being mates with Moran scum, sleeping with your best mates wife, leaving your pregnant wife after having another affair along with a
Multiple of other issues.

He is certifiably a piece of trash and shouldn’t be on TV, radio or even be allowed to write letters to the editor.
