Out: Butler, Jones, Webster
In: Leinert, Billings, Byrnes

This brings in more speed, longer kicking, better running ability, something we could of used on Saturday.

Jones is/was our number two mid but fitness is not there and we have guys banging down the door.

Hoping to see Connolly, Highmore and Owens break back into the team eventually.

Any thoughts on giving Sharman a game?

Our fwd line has been misfiring the last couple of weeks and we really need a sharpshooter in there to bolster our confidence....
Not sure we are misfiring missing goals & kicking points is still having shots, players kicking straight alleviates all issues we need to leave either Marshall or Ryder up forward at all times no resting the ruck on the bench.

King,Higgins,Gresh,Membry & Marshall/Ryder should be efficient to kick a winning score.

In Jones' first game he got 20 touches, 9 contested and 3 clearances with limited time in the middle

He also had 5 tackles (2nd behind Crouch) and 6 score involvements

Looked a little rusty but not sure his fitness is a real issue

Byrnes played a similar role early in the year and was well below Jones performance.

Windy and Owens similar when they had their opportunity

Makes no sense to drop him after one game

12 goals - 25 points ... in the last two weeks

Not even a 50% conversion rate

This is what I mean by misfiring

Our issue against Melbourne was getting it forward rather than the personal up forward.

We have also been the most efficient team at scoring once entering inside 50 until the Melbourne game, so I dont think there is a need to overreact and change what has been working for us after 1 game against the best defence in the comp.

I'd keep NWM in and take Mason Wood out, he can't kick for goal which could of cost us serious momentum, and his attack on the ball isn't important.

Wood, Butler Paton Out

Billings, Geary Byrnes In
Say hello to your brother Coops from all of us here

Did they just completely ignore Oliver's staging? Despite every fan saying it was a bad look for the game? Melbourne are the new Geelong ump faves.
Oliver milked it but there was clear contact so it's not staging.

Who cares what the fans say. Fans will complain about anything despite having no idea most of the time.

Could not agree more. Players like Stewart, L.Ryan, Moore, Aliir, May etc have been our cryptonite for years.

This is an essential problem for us to work out not just this week, but if we ever want to be a serious September team.

Realistically, Stewart would have to be about $1.20 for the 3 votes. Spotlight 100% should be on the coaching panel to see what they do this week.
100% Agree, We did change the positions late 2020 with Battle going forward and playing on Nick Haynes against GWS in Final Round, and he was AA that year, but without highmore in defence we lack height, so unless we bring in Highmore (Which we should), we can't lock them down

Because I think those players apart from obviously billings and Clark are just your typical d grade players. I also think the depth will be much better next year when owens windhanger etc move into a c plus standard if not higher. Let’s face it we have wood long windhanger Milera and butler in the side on Sunday. I don’t think 2 or 3 of them have suddenly improved. Just in the right place at the right time. The 2 young ones will be good but are d grade players at this stage. We couldn’t fit everyone in 3 games ago. Now there seems to be plenty of spots.
Not sure about their ratings D grade C grade or whatever, but that's 5 players at least playing well in the reserves most of which are young. That is something we haven't had for years so I'd say our depth at the moment looks good.

TBH, I'd be putting Membrey in the backline full time as an intercept and Sharman in the FWD line.

We look so much better with Membrey in the backline.
Why can't we have both in the forward line? Would cause headaches for the opposition with King, Membery & Sharman as leading targets. Melbourne has it with Brown, McDonald & Fritsch so why can't we do it? At least it will stop them double teaming King. Put Highmore in the backline.

Exactly we don't need Skunk when we have Highmore haha he's the intercepter we want!

Agree. Brown, McDonald and Fritsch is almost exactly like for like with King, Membrey and Sharman. And Melbourne having those three marking targets up forward means that they can use Gawn and Jackson much more flexibly, up forward, down back, on the wings.

It's a different mix to the one we've had so far, but it's definitely worth trialling.

Yeah **** it, let’s dissect the intercepting defender roll in our side. After all, what better week to do it then when we come up against the benchmark in Tom Stewart.

In my eyes there are three obvious players for this roll:

  • Tom Highmore
  • Nick Coffield
  • Jarrod Lienert

Highmore or Lienert should 100% play this weekend and if Coffield wasn’t injured he would also be in that conversation.

Both Lienert’s and Highmore’s form in the VFL has been pretty consistent and solid. They average relatively high disposal numbers for the backline (akin to Stewart) and whilst Lienert’s strength is his kicking, Higmore’s strength is his marking.

Currently, none of Highmore, Lienert or Coffield are in our side which I think is a little short sighted. Ideally we would want to have one of them holding down that roll with the others as depth. I dare say, Coffield would have it locked down if not for his ACL this year, but Lienert has done a pretty good job thus far before being omitted.

My preference now is Highmore. He has been holding his own in the VFL and I think just due to his age he’s a player we’d want to be developing over Lienert. More importantly though, when he’s on he’s well and truly capable of racking up intercept mark after intercept mark after intercept mark, and our rebound could really benefit from that.

The interesting thing is that Dougal Howard, Callum Wilkie and Josh Battle are all excellent at marking in their own right. In fact I’d argue that if we had our best team on the field, in good form, we would have the best marking backline in the league. Then again, a lot of that comes to structure, so it’s what we are working towards, not what we currently have.

Lienert’s been great but I don’t really see him in that intercept marking fashion. Next year it’ll truly be between Coffield and Highmore, and I dare say Coffield will be rearing to dominate. In the meantime, Highmore has demonstrated form in the VFL and deserves a spot in the 22 to progress further.

So looking forward towards this game, I’d manage Butler and throw long up forward whilst bringing in Highmore down back. I won’t be mad if it’s Lienert either, but I’d prefer Highmore.

That gives us a defence of:

Wilkie, Howard, Paton
Webster, Battle, Highmore

I’d say that’s pretty balanced with two smalls, two mediums and two talls. Plus we have defensively minded wingers in DMAC and Sinclair who link that backline to our midfield. And Paton is also capable of that linking roll whilst Webster has a good kick on him.

Aside from Hawkins and Cameron, Geelong seem to be running with a fairly small forward line. Battle and Howard to team against Hawkins and Cameron. Wilkie and Highmore to chop them out and cut off the ball. Paton and Webster to blanket Stengle and Close. Sinclair or Hill to play defensively from the midfield and chain up out of our d50.

Overall, I do think we need to be fostering that intercepting defender roll in our side. Might as well do it now instead of waiting for Coffield to return, and especially when we have Highmore and Lienert rearing to go. It could really upgrade our already solid defence, and in turn, promote the more attacking side of our team.

Yes it’s better than last year for sure but I rated it poor last year. Probably average this year and should be above that next year.
