Suffice to say we are going to find it very difficult to arrange a trade with Port. To get something gold you need to give something Gold. Hampson, Bower, Russell, Armfield, 1st Round pick, 2nd Round pick, simply wont cut the mustard. A combination of a 1st rounder and a somewhat fringe player in our side still wont get it over the line. We need to be realistic and understand that Butcher is their "Future" as he has been nicknamed by those at Port.

I doubt very much we will have JB in the navy Blue next year and expect him to stay with Port.

They offer him the number 1 ruck spot and a big$ deal he just might
We said no to trading Hampson for pick nine two years ago. We're at the point where we need to keep our list together. We don't want to throw away best 22 players and break up the playing group to get another young player. Offering up a pick/Hampson and Russell for Butcher would be the equivalent of trading Kennedy, pick three and Simpson to get Judd. We'd lose one of our leaders and favourite players. JR is in our leadership group, so he won't be going anywhere.

How can you say he "won't"....when in reality you have as much of an idea as the next person...which is zero!
He may...and hence why this is a rumor thread...
Clubs have traded away players that are in their leases ip group before if it is in the best interests of the club, and they will again.
Hampson as much as he has an upside would be worth giving up for a Butcher type player...as would Russell

Assuming we get Buckely with our 2nd round pick i'd give up Russell or Hammer plus our 1st round pick!

logic being that Russell is a South Aussie and Hammer has already been targeted! Plus they badly need a decnt ruckman!

Seriously doubt Port would be interested in anyone else that we'd be prepared to give away!

Russell finally came good but i still have my doubts about him!! Is still a tad slowish, still misses targets & still doesn't go as hard as he should do!

Collingwood and Geelong both won premierships without a decent ruck back-up, as long as the no.1 ruckman is managed and right to go in time for finals then thats enough!

Collingwood had only had Jolly and Woods
Geelong had ottens and Blake

l am personally not a huge Butcher fan, l think maybe some are getting carried away on the basis of a few games, but really the key point is that if he does decide to head back to Victoria more than likely he will nominate a club and in reality what Victoria club has real currency in terms of picks to trade pretty much nobody, so the Blues are probably as well placed as anybody if he does decide to head back to Victoria.

Butcher has played 4 games! granted he's kicked a few goals and looks good however who has he kicked them on? Schoenmakers? Markovic? Pears?

Seriously when he kicks bags on Scarlet, Tarrant, Jamison and the like then we can start entertaining giving up Bryce Gibbs and a first rounder for him because that is what Port will ask to get the job done, Bryce Gibbs is a required player at the club and a future leader who is part of the fabric of the group no way in the world will i trade him for a guy who has played four games and helicopter kicks the ball (Sticks says hi though!) It would be Russell or Hampson and a first rounder that would max our offer out and that will not be good enough given our first pick in the ND and the drool that other Melbourne clubs will go through...

he'll be too expensive and Mitchell may be just as good anyway..

Lot of crystal balls with this line of thought on Butcher. He has shown a lot of promise but has only played a couple of games. Would have to pay a huge ammount to get him. A very speculative risk.

Rather go for somebody with runs on the board.

This exactly :thumbsu:

He's not slow.
He's a penetrating kick off half back.
He's courageous.

This is a guy who finished second in a B&F to Judd, possibly the best player to have played the game. I'd almost back a motion at the next AGM to award all second placed getters in the Carlton B&F while Judd is there some sort of "B&F mortal" award.

If anything the Bulldogs are in a far better position than us to secure him and without being mentioned as yet are more than likely to get him than we are.

Why:

- In desperate need of a KPF who is young and sill the void left by BBBBH after this year.
- Are in a far better position to trade away draft picks than we are, both in the 1st round and as you can guarantee in the 2nd round with the expect loss of Ward.
- Have plenty of money in their cap to match anything that we offer.
- Have plenty of "Go Home" stars on their list, Cooney & Griffen (if push came to shove ala Kennedy) however unlikely.

We clearly aren't going to get Butcher, so why even entertain the idea. It'll only break your heart.

It may just be a foil though.

Not saying it's the case here, but there is something to be said for looking to be interested in someone other than who you really want.
The CFC would be holding their cards pretty close to their chest in as far as who we are really going after.
Not sure that all is always the way it seems.

...................... and Russell slow? :)
Some really should get to the games a little more.

Fair point, however in most situations the player e.g in this case Butcher normally determines where they wish to nominate and l would think right now the Blues would be a more attractive club than the Bulldogs for a variety of reasons, again if we were trade away something of valve, you would want to be fairly certain, as for a four game player not sure this is the case, l think some are going overboard on his true valve.

Hampson will be signed up shortly. Expecting an announcement in a week or 2.
