I honestly dont see Port going for Hampson.

1) They have young rucks developing
2) Made the call last year to back in their young ruckman over fighting for Jacobs
3) Are in a complete rebuild so have time with their rucks
4) Have significantly more important holes to fill around the ground
5) Can not risk a good young player or high pick on a speculative ruck option. Hampson may or may not turn out a great player. To me, it is a toss of a coin which way he goes. Hampson offered nothing in the VFL on the weekend.
6) Put yourself in Port's shoes (hard for many on here to do this). A Port supporter would slap their recruiters across the face if they lost a butcher for a speculative ruck option.

NB
Hampson might end up a champ...but if you tick the boxes on due diligence, he has played two whole good games. He has played many shockers. Yes, he can develop further, but that is all risk...lucas can develop into a Peter Matera, Davies could develop into a Birchall etc etc

Plenty of Hampson trade talk....but what about Warnock? He is out of contract also isn't he?

Port are in more need of a ruckman then any other club so maybe we package up the following:

Butcher to Carlton
Warnock & Armfield to Port

Again, short memories. It wasn't too long ago that Hampson was dominating the seniors.

Could you give me a number on how many games he has dominated since he has been at Carlton. Would the answer be 1 good game and 1 very good game which, if I get my calculator out on this one, gives me a total of 2?

I know... upside.

But i like Lucas's upside, i like Davies upside, I like Watson's upside, I like mcarthy's upside, I like Mitchell's upside, i like a trees upside...you know what, every player outside the best 22 has some upside if you wanna see it.

After all that, I dont see Port wanting the ahtletic freak, and good for us too, because next year they are going to trial footy with hurdles :D.

I can't believe that I have to keep reminding people of this, but Hampson and Kreuzer made for a very effective ruck combination in 2009. I have no doubt that if Hampson had been given an exclusive ruck/on-ball role over the last 2 seasons, he would have been an even more effective ruckman by now.

The only thing that hampered his development in the rucking role was the club's desire to turn him into a key forward and then lately, his unfortunate knee injury.

Despite his lack of time as the senior ruckman, he was starting to show good signs in the role this year and was able keep Warnock (a specialist ruckman) out of the side until his knee injury.

Methinks you are selling the man a little short.

Fine :thumbsu:, but he is great at Hurdles too, dont pick me up on that one.

HA HA that's some Classic Quotes. I nominate a CPA (Classic Posting Award)

Just looking through his 2009 season it brings back that he played ok in some games (not great or very good tbh) but showed glimpses within games. This is obviously where the upside boys comes from.

13/17 games less than 10 disposals is not so crash hot either. But i had forgotten he had taken 4 marks twice so can understand the "this one time at band campers" led by theGeneral climbing all over him for upside and CHF/FF.

For each game someone cites Hampson, I could probably cite double that with AJ and Armfield who are no more than periphual players. It highlights that he hasnt doesnt enough to warrant the hype.

And that hype gets exposed when we put it to the wider AFL community like Butcher for Hampson deals with steak knives (our first rounder is a steak knife in 2011). Butcher has double the upside over Hampson, let alone natural or current ability.

What does it all mean OldBlueFan? Is this the faith argument all over again? Is theGeneral a born again christian by day, and a Hamper band camper by night?

I dont believe in god, and upside isnt going to win us anything!

I don't think no one doubts his ability to play in the middle. I just think no one really give him hope of being a key forward. He struggles to take basic marks or knows how to lead like a true forward. We need to realize to get a pick like a number 1 pick or 2 or a Key position player. A player whose only been in the AFL system for 2 years who was rated near number 1 when drafted. We need to give away something as good or someone with talent along with our best pick.

We can't really offer up players like Armfield, Mclean, Joseph, Ellard, Curnow, Thornton to get this done, you have to offer players just below Murphy, Judd, Gibbs, Kreuzer, the likes of Walker, Russell, Betts, Yarran, Duigan, Hampson etc even Bower could be considered even though he had a poor year.

Bower and Russell are missing links in our team. Face reality, Hampson is just another tall athlete with poor hands our club has drafted who doesn't have footy smarts. We have not had a good ruckman in over 10 years. The last good ruckman we had was Matthew Allan. Kreuzer looks like being the next good ruckman but maybe next year.

Examples of good ruckmen are Cox, Naitanui, Mumford, Goldstein, Sandilands and jolly.

When we have a ruckman who gets 12 possessions and takes 1 or 2 big marks we get all excited and start blurting out the old "potential" line. The output of our ruckmen are nowhere near the top ruckmen in the comp. Guys who can't take a mark rarely come good. A ruckman who can't take a mark is near pointless unless they are getting mid to high 20s in the possession count per game and are performing as an extra midfielder but our blokes are barely getting half that.

Hampson is nothig special and not in our best 22 but if another club rates him as much as we do then lets go for it. Could be a handy defensive ruckman with good tap skills who can take the odd mark up forward and make a contest.

Again we need to convince Butcher to leave but he's probably not in a good situation to do so.

Scarry, I'm not saying he shouldn't be looked at as a possible trade option (although I'd prefer if Warnock was being touted) so please don't quote me unless you're specifically responding to something I've said.

And BG2011, my main point to you was that you were painting him like a hack, when he's clearly not. IMO, he's shown steady improvement through his career and has been attempting to do everything the club has asked of him. It's been widely documented that early this year he was hampered by a hand injury, and once he was over that he started to show good signs until the knee injury.

This is how I see it.
Our guys just don't get better peddling around with the Ants.

We like what we see in Hampson? We have to give him games at senior level until we get him to where we believe he could go and the same goes for Warnock, but we must make the choice.
We had the situation last year also, where we rotated our ruck-men dependant on their last game. It just doesn't work.

We must get Warnock stronger in the pre-season and we must get Hampson smarter and we certainly have to teach both of them how to mark and kick straight.
The one who comes out on top is the one we stick with and get a good run of games into.
The rest will take care of itself.

You totally won that!

That's funny about the tree BG2011. :)

Last year we had 4 good ruck-men, make no mistake.
We cleared one of them who was forced into becoming a permanent fixture and look what happens.
Get Hampson into another team next year and give him a guaranteed run of games and we'll be shedding tears for letting him go.

I love the horses for courses method of looking at things, but it just doesn't work that way for ruck-men, as they need to get a run of things to get set and I'll tell you now, that just doesn't happen playing in red.

I'm torn between wanting to trade Hampson, or keeping him.
In another team he's ready to be a champ, yet hanging around with the Bullants, awaiting an injury to Warnock, will get him nowhere.

It's an odd situation where we seem to have more to lose than to gain.

During this discussion many have suggested that we may get Butcher with someone like Bower or Hampson with our first round pick in the belief that we will only have to use a second or even third rounder for Buckley.

I'd gladly make that trade with either player but have always believed we will be forced to use our first rounder on Buckley.

If Butcher is on the open market there is no doubt that several Melbourne based clubs will be chasing him and I'd be prepared to bet that at least 1 will nominate Buckley as a first rounder to try to get us out of the Butcher equation.

I also think that Port will want the world for Butcher because their best chance of resigning him may be to force him into the PSD where GWS have many of the first picks. Butchers desire is, reportedly, to return to Melbourne and he would be more likely to remain with dog he knows than head to Sydney.

The way I see it we cannot throw the world at Port and you can guarantee that no club will do us the favours that were given to Collingwood in the drafting of Ball.

So while I would love Butcher from what I've seen of him I can't see us being anywhere near the money.
