* UPDATE: Greg Lynn, (former) senior pilot for Jetstar from Caroline Springs has been charged with two counts of murder

Russell Hill, 74, left his home in Drouin, Victoria, and picked up Carol Clay, 73, from her home in Pakenham for a camping trip. They spent one night at Howitt High Plains before heading into Wonnangatta Valley in the Victorian Alps the following day.

Mr Hill's wife thought her husband was camping alone.

He was an experienced bushman and former logger who knew the area well.

He last made contact with his wife, using his high frequency radio, on March 20 from Wonnangatta Station and has not been heard from since.

Other campers in the area discovered their burnt out campsite at Dry River Track six days later. Russell and Carol had simply vanished.

TIMELINE

March 19, 2020:
Russell Hill, 74, leaves his home in Drouin and collects Carol Clay, 73, from her Pakenham home for a camping trip.
March 20, 2020: Mr Hill tells a mate via amateur radio he has set up a campsite in the Wonnangatta Valley in the Victorian Alps, about 300km northeast of Melbourne.
March 21, 2020: A visitor passes the campsite and sees it’s been burned, with no sign of any campers.
June, 2020: Police reveal someone is involved in the disappearance.
March, 2021: A drone found in the search zone had no link to Mr Hill. Police also say they’ve tracked all vehicles in the area at the time except a white ute.
April, 2021: Cadaver dogs are unleashed to scour the search zone but no remains are found.
April, 2021: Searchers move to the Mt Hotham area, and shovels and other items found are handed over for forensic testing.
May, 2021: Police announce the searches have stopped.
July, 2020: Police make first contact with Lynn in his kitchen at Caroline Springs
October, 2021: Detectives announce anyone involved in the disappearance should be “very uncomfortable”.
November, 2021: Police reveal a fight could have erupted at the campsite between Mr Hill, Ms Clay and another person of interest.
November, 2021: Police claim someone tried to “cover their tracks”.
November, 2021: Police want to speak with the driver of a dark blue 1990s model Nissan Patrol with a trailer. It was caught on camera and spotted by witnesses in the area on the day the pair vanished.
November 23 2021: Police reveal a 55-year-old man from Caroline Springs in Melbourne’s west has been arrested over the pair’s disappearance. He is being questioned and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Button Man might be in the clear ...

Yes that's right read on

If Lynn is found guilty, it could be sold with the proceeds being given to family members of Ms Clay and Mr Hill, the Herald Sun reported.

If he is acquitted, the restraining order on the house would be lifted and return to the control of Lynn's wife Melanie, who was made its sole proprietor in January 2022, after her husband's arrest.

An ex-Jetstar pilot accused of murdering secret lover campers Russell Hill, 74, and Carol Clay, 73, is running out of cash to fund his defence.

Lynn, 56, has been in custody since November 2021 - 20 months after he allegedly murdered the couple in the Wonnangatta Valley, in Victoria's High Country.

In June, Victoria's Supreme Court heard Lynn had been privately funding his barrister Dermot Dann KC, who is recognised as one of the best defence lawyers in Australia.

Mr Dann revealed Lynn would not likely be able to afford to pay his legal team by the time he goes on trial in February.

It is understood Lynn had hoped to obtain funds off the back of his Caroline Springs property to pay for his defence.

'Every avenue was and is still being pursued in respect to an alternative course to fund the matter privately, it's just that we are dealing with various entities that are presenting somewhat of a roadblock,' Mr Dann said.

The court heard Lynn's prospects of being granted Victorian Legal Aid funding were under a cloud while he continued to hold substantial assets.

Mr Dann said an order made in the Supreme Court last December declared Lynn was still linked financially to the family home, which had potential to stop any application for government assistance.
Looking like that $40 cash he stole to get home undetected isn’t paying off.

The idea of a robbery is comedy gold. I mean in lockdown out in the middle of the "Gatta. Who could possibly seriously believe a robbery took place? Do people believe robbers are waiting around for the odd person here and there?

Drop bears are bad asses

Tried to be sneaky too and put the house in his wife’s name only.

This is from a while ago. I know it’s the daily mail but they do refer to “other substantial assets”.

Must have resolved the funding issue for DD to continue to represent him. Other than his super wonder what those were.
Transferred out of his name 20 October 2021. Prior to arrest. That had me intrigued 🤔
Yep, were you there as well?😊
Tried to get there as often as work would allow. Limited mostly to Fridays. Have learnt plenty. This case has had a bit of everything.

The incriminating actions of GL that are still very significant for the jury to debate over are very telling still. Cleaning up the campsite, burning the campsite, removing the bodies from the area in his own trailer and theft of keys, phones, cash and a drone are all solely motivated to make GL disappear?

Good luck if you believe those actions add up to his story and his story alone.

Just remember GL most likely wanted to make it look like a robbery from the wallets in the footwells but then remembered he had locked the car afterwards and taken the keys with him.🤣
"They were also instructed they could more readily reject some parts of the prosecution argument because of what Justice Croucher called a "breach of the basic rules of fairness". The breach arose from Mr Porceddu's failure to directly put to Mr Lynn that he covered up the campers' deaths because he believed he'd committed murder in cross-examination, despite relying on that allegation in his closing argument, the judge said."

Its not about what I believe - IMO he is guilty of causing their deaths in some way, shape or form and not in an accidental manner either. This quote from the Judge suggests he has instructed the jury to discount the part of the prosecution's argument that he covered up their deaths because he murdered them.

I think you have misread the meaning of my post - I said if he only covered up their deaths in order to disappear (his story), he lost the reasoning for that when the cops rocked up at his door. At that point he had failed in his attempt to disappear and further tampering with their bodies could in no way be attributed to merely removing himself from the picture - he was fair and square in it by then. This is what Porceddu failed to put to him during the cross and it is now why Coucher is telling the jury to discount it.

Most people, even having seen footage of the place, really have no idea how of how remote it is. A robbery out there is as likely as GL being the Button man

Difference between “could” and “should” though. Judge didn’t strike it or say it couldn’t be relied upon. I know it sounds like parsing but if it was that big of a deal he could have done that.

Huh? Article says it was transferred Jan 2022...

Someone in the gallery i was chatting to suggested they/he also has rental/investment property...i can't confirm this bit of info.
DD will own that too shortly

It does. Actual property transfer records confirm actual date as 20 October 2021. Maybe transfer wasn’t finalised until Jan 22?

“parks are nice but people sure have a terrible taste in car colour”
I wonder if it cost them the (not insignificant) stamp duty on transfer..in my experience, spousal transfer is only duty free on relationship breakdown!😉

So let me see if I understand this correctly.
We all like the judge, but his instructions to the jury - ‘oh no, GL might get off’.
Nobody on this forum has ever had any connection to GL, but ‘his story is so stupid, we can tell he is lying’.
DD is an amazing man to watch at work, ‘but how can he defend someone like that’.
The first his wife ever knew about this was when her house got raided at nighttime when she was at home with her kids, ‘but she’s so arrogant and sits up straight and waves at GL when he comes to court’.
DD confirmed there was issues with funding, ‘serves them right, leave them with nothing, they must pay’.
Their family home (and you’ve done searches, there’s not another one) has a caveat on it so it can’t be sold. If GL is found guilty, hoorah! That will show him!… but where will his wife and kids live?
The most at risk for homelessness? Women of age 50+. Which she is. With only a part time job and as has been discussed here: one son under 18, another who comes to court and has been seen in tears.
GL will have a roof over his head, ha ha! you say. What about them? Will you be taking them in?

Each charge is considered on it's own merits even though both deaths occurred in seeminly one train of events

The jury doesn't know how Hill died ... heart attack, (they know he had a dicky heart and was using viagra), knife wound, gunshot or blunt weapon?

They don't know so a reasonable juror may determine a finding of not guilty on that charge.

Clay they do know how she died, a shotgun slug to the head.

That implies an outside agency pulling the trigger. Lynn says it wasn't him but the jury may form a reasonable doubt to his testimony.

Aquittal on Hill but Guilty for Clay?

There is more to come, that is a certainty.
I’m hoping there are rumblings in the background… sounds like more stories to be told

You're exaggerating.

Nobody's suggested in here that Lynn's wife and children should be left destitute and homeless. That isn't going to happen.

You were going well up until the last line. I thought you were leading to something like a big revelation, but you didn't, just like disappointingly there were basically no gotcha moments or big revelations in the prosecution's case that I saw.

Not really, it's a largely misrepresentative mash up.
