I've watched the movies but I haven't read the books. I get the impression the movies struggled to keep up with the books the longer they got.

They're just like any adaptation where things have to get cut, books are better but that's not unusual. For the most part they did a good job and they're perfectly serviceable re-watchable films with great parts and not so great parts.

Movies are pretty much my main interest so always up for discussion. Think people can get a bit too attached to source material at times when things are clearly more suited to literature.

Theres also the opposite end of the scale where a 12 page book in the Hobbit becomes 8-9 hr worth of films because money.

In theory I would have thought the hobbit could be expanded upon by a creative mind into a trilogy in practice that’s not what happened.

Between the two trilogys (what is the plural of trilogy?) It is 18 hours where some people meet then walk forever to put a ring in a volcano.
Lord of the Rings is the most overrated tribology ever.
The books are worse, they take 4 pages to describe a tree..than explain another one in similar detail. Painful.
