In NRL we have to endure Ray Warren punch out similar "little known facts" in the case of Billy Slater once or twice a game for 15 years he'd refer to him as the former track work jockey.
Painful.

Worth it though to hear him say 'Novacastrian' a few times a year.

Or call the State of Origin the biggest sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere every single year, in spite of all evidence to the contrary

Yes, they cling to the Origin ratings as though they are winning hearts and minds across the country yet despite copious amounts of Storm premierships 95% of Victorians still call it 'rugby'.

I’ll give them one thing, in spite of being nowhere near the biggest sport in the country, they sure do swear it black and blue. Dogged determination to be naive in the face of facts.

In fairness a lot of the supporters are products of the Queensland education system, so it is unfair to expect much in the way of critical thinking for the vast majority of folks who exclusively follow league.

My actual pet hate (as a very strong fan of Rugby league) is when Gus and Rabs call it the greatest game on earth. Its just their game (and mine) it is not better or worse than many other games.

I was in a meeting once in about 8-10 years ago, and someone bought up the good work the Wanderers and Giants were doing with fan engagement and community involvement and suggested that we look adopting some of the more successful practices. Gus went on a dismissive tirade about copying second rate organisations etc. etc.
Some guys are so blinded they assume as soon as people see the game they will immediately fall in love with it as it is superior to all other games. Very frustrating.
Not too different too the China experiment with the AFL. People thinking that you put on a game there and all of sudden people will see it and be fans and all of a sudden there will be a league and a market. Not how it works. Long term engagement of a generation is what it takes. Also there is lots of good games, Former wallaby captain Nick Farr Jones put it best, the game you play is the greatest game of all. You need to get kids playing, they will grow into future fans, sponsors etc..
Getting off track onto one of my bug bears. :)

In Rabs’ and Gus’ defence - and the latter is hard for me to say - ‘the greatest game of all’ has long been a catchphrase for rugby league in Australia despite not being a quantifiable thing. It’s even referenced in this old ad for the league that pre-dates the Tina Turner campaigns - back before Super League destroyed the heart and soul of the league.

Just like rah rah snobs call it ‘the game they play in heaven’ I don’t really mind the ‘greatest game of all’ tagline - it’s one of the few traditions left in the code.

On a side note wsw games were the pinnacle for stadium atmosphere in west sydney 5/6 years ago.
Too bad the incompetent FFA has run the league into the ground and ruined its only selling point over other codes as the actual standard of the football itself is bog average.

Not a bad start to the day, mate won the social club tickets to Eagles v Suns. Taking me along.

Footys back
Suns are a chance, steam rolled you guys early last season.
Some good additions to that team three ex tigers ellis, markov and townsend i think will send them in the right direction this year.

Even Victory games had incredible atmospheres 5,6 and 7 years ago.

Unfortunately that implosion was a combination of their North end fans, the club and FFA restrictions.

I remember the hordes of Victory fans marching up Swan Street then - it was insane. Absolutely nothing like that now.

The games and chants were a tonne of fun

It's sad what has happened, we tried going a few months ago and it was nothing like it was.

That game was hard to watch and again this year on the amazon doco.

I still think we'll be too strong at home even without Shuey/Yeo. Should still be a good contest.

Jack Lukosius is just about my favourite player in the league so excited to see him play.

Was a great night out for a while. Atmosphere was tops.
Im a non-soccer fan, so the standard wasn't an issue for me.

Funny story I once spilled a whole beer all over Ian "Dicko" Dickson at an event as I climbed into my seat at a Wanderers game. He took it like a champ and laughed it off. I always joke to my mates that I threw the beer all over him and he deserved it.
At the Jack Newton Celebrity one year he comes up to me and a mate and says, "I know you, your the bloke who threw a beer all over me, don't worry I deserved it" clearly also joking, my mates jaws dropped and sort of went with I always thought you were joking and you spilled it or something, 2 guys I didnt know were like WTF. I played it up for a minute or so before saying of course I didnt mean it, I just spilled and he is also joking.

Luko, Rankine, Rowell, Anderson and B King.

Fair core group if they can keep them together.

Even around that there is plenty of young talent (Flanders, Powell, Budarick etc)

Were you playing in the event or just spectating ?

I really like Bowes and Collins for them too. Hoping they push up the ladder this year except round 1 they can cop a big fat L please.

The only thing I have that comes remotely close to your amusing celebrity anecdotes is me and a mate getting kicked out of Hollywood Showgirls on the Gold Coast because we were both giving shit to Warwick Capper as he was heading up to the VIP area.
