Is that the Old Boys entry for the Melbourne Cup?

Reminds me of the cricket club that was advertising for new players. A horse rocks up to the club headquarters and says to the manager, "Hi. I saw your advertisement in the paper for new players, so here I am."

Bewildered, the manager says, "But you're a horse."

The horse says, "So? Show me in the constitution of the game where it says that a horse can't play cricket."

The manager, who is still clearly stunned to be in the presence of a talking horse, says, "OK you've got me there. Fine - come to training on Tuesday night, and we'll see what you've got."

Come Tuesday, the horse is the first one to arrive at training, and he's obviously insanely keen to impress, because he's already padded up. He heads straight for the nets, and whatever is bowled at him, it's met by the middle of his broad bat. The manager is clearly amazed by the skill of this 4 legged Bradman - without hesitation, he says to the horse, "Well you're opening the batting on Saturday."

Game day arrives, and the horse's team wins the toss. The captain immediately decides to bat first, and around 10 minutes later, the horse and his bemused partner (who had obviously never batted with a horse before) stride purposefully to the middle. The horse says confidently to his partner, "I'll take the first over - you've got the best seat in the house."

The first ball is a bouncer - obviously designed to unsettle the batsman (or should that be batshorse?). But quick as a flash, the horse is in perfect position to play the hook shot, and the ball sails over square leg for 6. The second ball is pitched up, and the horse meets it with the full face of the bat: straight back over the bowler's head for another 6. Whatever the bowler tries, the horse has an answer for it, and at the end of an extraordinary first over, the scoreboard reads 0 for 36 - the crowd of 5 men and a dog are in raptures over what they've just witnessed.

The second over starts. The first ball is a good one on middle stump, and the batsman bunts the ball into the off side and calls for a run. To his horror, the horse is leaning on his bat at the non striker's end - he hasn't moved. The batsman is run out by several metres, and as he trudges off, he turns to the horse and says, "Why didn't you run?"

The horse says, "Mate if I could run, I'd be in the Melbourne Cup."
