Opinion Sack Hinkley 3 - 2021 is worse than 2020 already

Oh I agree with that. I was more referring to the change week to week in terms of game style.

Travis Boak was interviewed on ESPN's website earlier this year in a multi part series where he discussed game plan and what not. He was saying that Ken doesn't really make changes during the game and tends to let the players just try to execute the style trained during the week. That premise made me worried then and it still makes me concerned now.
I think its fairly well known that he is a useless game day coach and is regarded as the easiest coach for opposition coaches to coach against because he is a one trick pony who doesn't make changes and cant respond to what the opposition are doing.

We've become the biscuits football team under Hinkley. Crumbled under pressure.

Probably a discussion for another thread but I don't think this club's inability to perform under pressure began during the Hinkley era, I think it's been a staple part of the club's culture since the turn of the century.

At least between 2001-2007 we only really crumbled under finals pressure, partly due to us trying to develop a possession game which took a long time to master and was exposed under finals pressure. We delivered in many of the big games during the minor round.

Post October 2014 we haven't played finals to crumble there, because we crumble in the minor round when we have high expectations.

Port - the Violet Crumbles!

Ken sits there in the box looking dumb founded about what to do.

Meanwhile Fagan is down on the boundary giving instruction and encouragement to his players. Brisbane are an exciting team, full of energy and hunger and that starts with their coach.

Sack Hinkley before he further damages our younger crop.

Has he ever gone to the boundary line to coach?

Coaching from the boundary line might look good for the viewing audience but in Aussie Rules is it really of any real benefit.

Is the job of the head coach during a game to give words of encouragement in person to players coming to the interchange bench or to have an overall view of the game and make tactical decisions based on what is happening all over the ground?

My view is that it is the latter but their are plenty of people impressed by the optics of the former.

The problem with Hinkley is that he isn't a competent tactical coach so it really doesn't matter where he locates himself during a game.

I think that's just because we had a much better team then. In the end, we actually did crumble when the pressure was truly on.

Hinkleys reaction in the box when we are being over run and smashed all over the field is to suck down his Coke Zero's harder. The guy is a clueless muppet of a gameday coach.

hinkley genuinely isn't a coach on game day. he sits there and gets handed a piece of paper at the end of the quarter so he can blast the guys with lower disposals, or whatever he does when he talks to the players. he probably just makes comments like a fan "gee that was good from neale" "c'mon westy get into the game" "i love me some aspartame"

It was mental then as it is now. After losing against the Hawks in 2001 at home doubts crept in. They only got worse after 2002 against the Pies. Choco got overly intense and tried to outwit the opposition unnecessarily (Stevens in the forward pocket in 2003). Choco admitted he needed to allow the players more freedom in 2004 and that freedom also relaxed the players and stopped them going into shells / panicking in the 2004 finals.

Quality of the lists aside, worrying in a final, where it's win or you've stuffed your season (for a Non-vic side losing from top 4 in week 1 is almost always that's it), is not the same as bottling H&A games repeatedly. The pressure is much less intense, the penalty isn't the same, it's not excusable. Our earlier sides never had a fear of getting to finals.

I honestly think we've a bunch of players (older ones who either were there in 2007 or drafted whilst we still had a list mostly of players there in 2007) who subconsciously are afraid of making them. Mess up along the way and there's 8 other games that week and 21 other games in the season to spread any negative attention around. Get to finals and you've the glare of the whole AFL world on you, with only 3, 1 or no other games that weekend to spread the attention around.

IMO this is why we've seen so many games where we play in our shells when top / top 4 / top 8 spot is on the line. Then we'll have a patch during the game where it looks like the game is lost and the players fear goes and they play to their best. Then it'll get close and you can see them going into shells again. They can consciously tell themselves they are close and are disappointed, but subconsciously too many senior players are relieved that more intense expectations have been avoided. I doubt any of them even realise it. You can see this by how few times our 'senior' leaders have won us close (two goals either way) games since 2007.

Westhoff and Hartlett are two that immediately spring to mind as chronic pressure crumblers. There in 2007 and drafted not long after respectively. Only Gray and Boak (especially once the pressure of leadership was removed), from that time have not crumbled more often then not.

Of course getting back to Hinkley a decent coach would a) see this and help the players get past it or b) look to move on those players. Neither of which looks to have happened. If anything he's an active enabler of 'close enough is good enough' and perpetuating the malaise to newer players over 2015 - 2019.

If I was running the club not only would Hinkley be out, but this would be the last year of Hoff and Hartlett on our list, despite what form they are in. You can add that to my Port opinions that are unpopular if need be

I can't think of his name but yonks ago the swannies had a bloke who was the opposite of kern, in that he was seen as a sensational game day coach but absolutely sucked at the day to day stuff, so they relieved him of those responsibilities.

He was an ex tigger half forward with wispy fair hair and a fore heard you could have used to screen a drive in movie, and there were rumours going around at the time that his players called him Max Headroom.

Putting aside our forward line issues (a symptom of the disease, not the root cause), the thing that has concerned me is the lack of growth we’ve seen list wide.

People saying vines is a hack and average inside mid, while correct right now, are dead wrong when it comes to his potential (based off his shown ability. Like almost every player on our list, his development has gone backwards.
He has a MASSIVE weapon in quick fire handballs that hit targets, but it appears that he has had ZERO coaching put into him and to teach him how to utilise this weapon.
With even a small amount of coaching, his handballs could be huge for attacking setups, hitting guys mid sprint for plays forward.

But nope, he appears to have done no work on this, or his basic skills.

The same goes for almost everyone else on our list. Basic skills have gone backwards, and no one has made themselves a better player.

Something is severely wrong at the PFC

The symptoms are shithouse skills and zero game plan, but the root cause comes back to a coach completely out of his depth, who is void of ideas, and has got his way in creating a lopsided team.

Just watch him on game day. Every time they cut to him in the box, he’s just sitting there in la la land. Never ever touches the phone, never speaks or even sits near any other coaches.
Hinkley just sits there expressionless, looking like he’s about to tear up and cry.

It’s fu(king depressing to watch.

Ken will get the boys breathing fire against GWS to regain some faith. Which will result in 10 mins of manic pressure and aggression, resulting in dumb free kicks. We then over compensate and go into a shell. Script read many times before.

this is legitimately upsetting

It does come across as Hinkley is not a good game day coach. In the Brisbane game, in the second quarter when the camera cut to him, he did appear clueless. But that is our impression. We seemed to do better when we had good assistants to help Ken when he first coached. That is our impression which could be different to reality. BUT if it is true, then let us accept it and deal with it. A leader can’t be great at everything and the sign of a great leader is to have people around that fill the gaps. What is stopping Ken?
