Opinion Sack Hinkley 3 - 2021 is worse than 2020 already

If you want to see what the path you wanted us to take leads to, it's called the Adelaide Football Club. That's what you get when you continually back in mediocre tall players like Riley Knight and Elliott Himmelberg instead of cutting bait when it's clear that your list doesn't have a flag in it and going into the draft.

Riley Knight is 181cm tall, and Elliott Himmelberg had played 8 career games before this season. What in the absolute **** are you talking about?

The Crows played in a GF 3 seasons ago, which is more than we've done in the last decade. The path wasn't completely wrong and ours wasn't any better.

We might be in a better position than them now but we still don't have anything to show for it yet. I guess Janus has already put the flag in the bank, like he's done every year since 2015.

So are you arguing that Ken Hinkley intentionally coached poorly so we'd get better draft picks, or are you arguing that it's good that Ken Hinkley is a bad coach because we ended up with better draft picks?
I'm arguing that it's a waste of time selecting mediocre talls that won't get you closer to the goal of winning a flag just so you can win a couple more games.
I think he's arguing that Ken Hinkley has a complete inability to develop tall forwards.

You do realise that that youthful enthusiasm wouldn't exist had we not gone down the path we did, right? We ended up with the players we did because we finished in the positions we did.

Sydney doesn't do a deal for our first round pick in 2016 to allow us to get Marshall and Powell-Pepper if we finish in the finals race.

Hawthorn and West Coast don't do the deals giving up the draft picks for guys like Impey and Ah Chee that we use to improve our 2018 draft position.

There's no way Fremantle does the trade they did with us to secure Rozee if we finish higher up the ladder in 2018. We wouldn't have had the picks to satisfy them, and Adelaide would have got him.

There's no way Brisbane trades their first round pick last year to us for our first round pick this year if they didn't think we were going to finish outside of the eight. That means we don't get Georgiades.

We don't make finals the past few years AND get all the players we have at the moment. It's one or the other in terms of the real top end talent like Marshall, Powell-Pepper, Rozee, Butters, Duursma, Bergman, Georgiades and Williams. In fact, we probably would have missed out on players like Hayes, Farrell, Garner and Patmore as well. Let's say we did exactly what you suggest, and it worked exactly how you say it does. We win more games, make finals. That means we would retain the likes of Frampton, Butcher or Eddy because they were doing a job. Would we have won a flag in the past five years with the likes of a young Marshall, Frampton, Butcher, Eddy or whoever else you want to name sitting as a foil for Dixon?

The answer is in the following question: 'How many SANFL flags did any of those players win with us when they were with us?' i.e. no chance. Because when the heat was on, all of those players went to water for whatever reason - inexperience (Marshall), hotheadedness (Frampton), poor skills (Butcher) or lack of hunger (Eddy).

We tried doing the same thing with Jackson Trengove as a forward in 2017 and it just doesn't work.

What's funny is that last year Geelong were 9-1 after 10 games, better than we are, and they have a bloke at the helm who is a current premiership coach.

Yet I don't recall a single person talking up Chris Scott as coach of the year or asking him to be re-signed. By Kane & co's standards Chris Scott was the best coach of the 21st century at that point.

Brad Scott coached North to back-to-back Prelims in 2014/15, and had the Kangas sitting top with a 10-1 record following a 70pt hiding of Richmond at the halfway mark of 2016.

I believe he’s 2IC of a Jim’s Tag & Test franchise these days.

Lol, I always thought he was taller. All Crow players blend into each other. But really, that was just a name I picked out of a hat cause I knew he was a forward and he was a Riley/Rory...it wasn’t my point. You can pick any forward they have and the message is still the same.

Adelaide ended up exactly where they are now because they gave a mediocre forward in Josh Jenkins - a player who did everything right except hit the contest - a massive deal when the rest of the team had a good year. They had to pay Geelong just to get him off their books. We made the same mistake with Lobbe when he had a good season that we believed meant he would turn into a great ruck.

Adelaide’s 2017 season is the best we could have hoped for if we had played talls that didn’t hit the contest. And it would have ended the same way.

Then we would be in the position Adelaide finds themselves in now.

Dan Houston deliberately handballs to Ollie Wines' feet to ensure that we get low draft picks, which was Ken Hinkley's coaching directive.

It's all coming together.

Someone tell Kornes that Ken has a trigger for next season if we make finals. He needs to shut up about it.
Making the finals just once in 3 years would have to be the softest trigger clause in a coach's contract in the league. I mean he doesn't even need to win a final, he just needs to scrape in to the 8 and bang, another year at the club on an overinflated wage.

I think he is seriously making the case that we should be giving more years to the guy thats achieved nothing in 7 years and still has 2 years to run.
