I'd legit take Paul Roos right now.

Yes he is defensive, but we have that many runners and elite ball users that we aren't gonna lose the speed and run and foot skills.

What Roos would do is ensure that nearly every one of those runners and elite ball users will defend and put their heads over it when needed otherwise they can have fun playing in the VFL.

Remember how well we used and isolated Hall,Davis and O'Loughlin?

Scary how Roos came within a point of B2B with a vastly inferior list at his disposal made up of ex rejects and bits of players traded in.

I don't think its fair to say Roos had a "vastly inferior list".

The forward line in particular was more potent than what we have now.

But what Roos did have was 100% buy-in from the playing group & an ability to adapt his game style when required.

I'm not sure Horse has that.

The way I see it, the 2024 Swans would win in an athletics competition but the 2005 Swans would win in a football competition.

I think the 2012 Swans were better than both. Their only weakness was KPF. Defence and midfield were stronger than both.
Its funny because i have thought for a while that this 2024 team wasnt that strong. It might be rose coloured glasses, but I rate shaw and malceski above lloyd and florent. I'm not actually sure i prefer blakey to mattner. I could make the case that mattner was better.

i rate jack, hanners, kennedy rok as better than parker, heeney, warner

I rate richards and grundy as streets ahead of melican and mccartin

i rate mummy and pyke as better than grundy and mcclean.

I barely see a position where i prefer the 2022 player (Mcinerney and gulden maybe better than the wings) papley and hayward better than morton and whoever we pretended was playing small forward - craig bird ??

makes you wonder about the overall standard of the comp or just that your perception of footballers is that they are better in hindsight.

Five minutes more and he would have.
What sticks out in my memory from the 06 GF, particularly in comparison to the pea hearts that wore red and white last month, was the fight back in the second half. We were completely out played in those first two quarters but came out and gave it everything in the last two, something I really thought we would do this year.😞

Watched a replay of 2006 GF last year for the first time. Resisted watching it for years. it was a great contest and we probably only needed one more minute! Buchanan was huge in last quarter. Maybe he should be given a new role next season as "heart" coach for want of a better description. He could invite back almost all players from 05 and 06 to address the players.

…………….and gifted Horse with a p’ship with his hardened players.
I remember how brutal & no nonsense he was with the Barry Hall exit when Bazza went from team first thinking to me, me, me thinking.

Horse is brutal on some & soft on others. Not sure what his markers are but looking back at ROK & then comparing it to how long he has persisted with an out of form Hayward, Amartey, McDonald or Blakey, I’m not sure when he gives credits & when he takes them away.
Inconsistent signals.

Don't think this is quite true, if you want to say that then perhaps Eade gifted Roos the 05 premiership since the majority of the team was recruited under his leadership.

What a brilliant suggestion. The current mugs aren't worthy of tying the shoelaces of most of our players from that era.

Maaaaaaaate, look at the thread title. Let us just enjoy our vitriolic bile and not bring truisms into it!
Heaven knows with our current crop of pea hearts we don't have much else to enjoy 😡

No worries I'll let you get back to it, fwiw I thought longmire and his assistants sucked on gf day, having said that I don't think that makes him a bad coach.

Soooooooo much this.

His standards have completely fallen by the wayside. The things he lets players get away with, and worse, actively rewards them for, are borderline unforgivable as a coach.

Fair call LL.
I guess I meant that they thrived under Roos' tough game style & coaching, more so than Eade, & Horse inherited the remnants of that toughness in individuals & team. This list/team, now has 100% of Horse's fingerprints all over it.

A game where we lost by 1 but were never truly in it. Outplayed us pretty much all game. Goodesy gave us a sniff - great player.

I blame Darren Jolly. How dare he stay up for the birth of his child lol.

You wonder if this is the same Horse... He dropped ROK ruthlessly in 2014 and was giving sprays to players like Jetta. You compare it to the coach of today where he wouldn't drop anyone else apart from the bottom 6 unless there was a serious injury.

New generation perhaps? Not hurt their feelings too much in this day and age? Who knows...

If we make another GF, we should have Kirk, Bolton, Crouch, LRT, Hall, Buchanan, Kennedy and Buchanan stalking in the rooms eyeballing every player before they run out for the opening bounce. Do it again at half time if necessary!

Horse has become the parent who wants to be friends with his kids.
