We get to keep the most important parts; points/draft picks.

Sheahan has been spot on with his information.

So you want our club to throw four good men under a bus to help the AFL save face?

Tell you what.. reduce Hird's ban to 3 months. Corcoran can have 3 months. Reid and Thompson are released from all charges. Club pays 1M fine. That is the best I would give. And it MUST be made clear that Hird and Corcoran are being suspended for GOVERNANCE issues only. Need firm commitment that no further doping punishments will occur for the 2012 season. Needs to be the end.

The club might take that.

They won't and shouldn't take that deal. The AFL knows it's done farked up, why would we suddenly up and give in? They don't have any PR cards left to play.

Just a thought. I wonder if there was a reason the club and Hird have decided to fight the AFL separately? What if the club accepted that penalty and everything was signed off as completed by the AFL, but Hirdy kept going with court action and got his suspension overturned and was re-instated as coach.

I don't want this to happen at all, but wondering what would happen in this scenario.

If people believe that the media and the AFL are running some kind of smear campaign, I'd love their opinions on the motivations of the AFL. Why would the AFL have an interest in damaging the EFC?

This alone is why everything has just become deadly serious - the AFL and the EFC both share a common interest. The AFL would not conspire to harm the EFC - doing so is the equivalent of self-harm.

Unless there is some motivation I'm missing? Are they bumping us off for a Tassie Team? Someone please enlighten :)

Save-face. No turning back now. If Essendon comes out on top here the AFL commission will be considered the laughing stock of the world.

It's as simple as what grant thomas has been saying his whole media career. The afl like to manipulate everything and everyone to suit their own agenda. Not playing ball has infuriated them, and it has all snowballed from hird not standing down way back when.

It looks like we are getting closer to an agreement !;)

And any charges must reflect Governance issues.

Its important that we don't decimate the club because of stubborness - As i posted earlier, I am worried about the number of uncontracted players - Some of these guys are waiting to see any proposed punishments.

At the end of the day Reid and Corcoran will serve their penalties in the off-season - So the propsed penalties are not as draconian as requested.

So in the space of two weeks, the AFL has gone from a position (as I understand it):

  1. Club 2.5M fine
  2. Hird 12 month ban
  3. Corcoran, Reid, Thompson 6 month ban
  4. Lose picks 1+2 in 2013 and 2014 drafts
  5. Lose premiership points and barred from finals in 2013

TO
  1. Club Fine (undisclosed amount)
  2. Hird 12 month ban
  3. Corcoran, Reid 3 month ban
  4. Thompson fined.

Hmmm.. either their case is just soooo strong they feel embarrassed to have it heard.. or they are running for the hills. Glad the other club presidents backed them SOO strongly today.. ;) Either way I say keep up the heat. Articles like the one in the Australian are just the beginning.. we have possible 'fake' phone calls.. we have a CEO that can be show to have broken privacy laws on multiple occasions, threats, coercions and, at the heart of it all, NO banned substances administered.

I understand that 'taking the deal' may seem like the way to go, but I would be tempted to hold out for a little longer and get those suspensions down a bit. Then you take the deal, play finals and smash the shit out of the competition!

After the clamity of the 'charge sheet' gets buried.. it will come back yaco.. I am sure of it.

You can distract an audience for only so long..

At the heart of this issue is a 'substance' that IS THE ONLY ONE that had 'doubt' attached to it. In February the AFL was told, along with all others that enquired, that it was NOT BANNED.

The World Doping Authority, which has very LEGAL power in this country.. then made a statement that declared the substance banned.

Instead of being open, honest and transparent about the wrong advice/errors, ASADA closed up shop and the AFL let them.. and kept mum themselves. This then meant the players had to live with this stress and worry for 7 months while these two agencies went round and round looking for ANYTHING that could be 'pinned' on the players that would avoid needing to look at AOD. There was NOTHING else found that could be proven.

This IS the story. The media will get there eventually.. and a Court will make sure of that.

Totally 100% agree with this - that's what I've been telling friends and family. Due to their stuff up they've been desperate to pin EFC with something else...

Think Hird and the EFC are delaying the inevitable. Sure some say here this will still be playing out over Summer so HEY guess what the AFL WILL DO?,strip All our points for 2014,lose Membership,Sponsers and bring this great club to it's knees! Hird and Co may feel they have a case but SOMEONE has severely ****** THIS ALL UP and we have to pay the price so lets do it NOW,NOT NEXT YEAR!

This is what implied in a post earlier today.

Over to you Rines !

Another new member. Welcome Friend.

The AFL have an interest in proving the are allmighty and powerful and can do what they like. The AFL have an interest in making sure their CEO isn't thrown in jail for leaking classified information. The media just wants to sell newspapers.

I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts in the game day forums and other threads.

Might want to double check my join date. I don't like the tone of your assertion, but I'll let it slide. Asking a question about what the AFL's motivations are isn't necessarily a defense of the AFL - I honestly want to know what peoples theories are.

It's a stretch rines, I don't see how punishing the EFC and attacking members of it's staff protects Vlad from going to jail for leaking classified information, maybe you could spell that out to me?

Leave him be, rines :)

I see the AFL have shit themselves with their points, and draft pick penalties and have now offered this according to Tony Sheahan (who has been spot on this saga. He also said points and picks are off the punishment list. FWIW, I disagree with the proposed punishment, especially the Doc Reid part):

AFL said to have offered Essendon an early plea; Hird suspended for 12 months, Corcoran & Reid 3 months with Bomber Thompson a fine.

I say go to court until all our staff are cleared. The AFL has more to lose in court. EFC may win everything

I don't think that anyone can make heads or tails of what's happening at AFL House at the moment.

rines has got it in one.

They're backpeddling at a rate of knots because frankly they've got jack .

I want this over and done with as much as anyone else, but not at the expense of what's right. Other supporters should be the same, there is barely a club that the AFL hasn't stitched up in the Fatguts administration, a good outcome for us could be benefiting others for years to come here.
