He is a potential star very tall player, can mark, kick and good on the ground. It is much easier to get a good tall back to do the job compared to getting a match winning tall forward. That is why such players are on the big money and there are few of them. Of course Geelong will try him out as a forward at some stage. I never said they would do it soon. I have been complaining since the end of the season to the mid season draft that we needed another very tall defender, and that failure to do something could come back to bite us. As for comparable young forwards coming through, there is only Neale who is raw and has played one game. Esava is shorter and is taking his time in coming through.
Given what we've seen to date and the amount of time & games Esava has been given (beyond generous really) it seems he will not make it at AFL level as a decent forward for the Cats. I, for one., would not be counting on him to make it at all.

We really think he's gonna do a reverse Domsy?

He’d be one of the very few to have ever done it, and succeed. Naughton doing it at the Bulldogs but you could ague he should still be down back (I think he should be). No for me.

He could if we wanted him to but he is such a good defender we'd be silly to do it unless something on our list balance changes immensely

Maybe more a pinch hitting forward like Taylor at times - but when that was done as a surprise move and not an expected hail Mary

I'm trying to think of any other young defender, who looks like with time & development that they could be a multiple AA quality over the next decade, where there's talk of them switching to play forward instead...

Do or did the likes is Harris Andrews or Jacob Weitering get talked about as potential forwards - or more acknowledged that when you have a top class defender, you don't unnecessarily mess with that?

After our clash with the Bulldogs, I'm pretty sure I heard some discussion that they should review where they're playing Naughton as he may be needed down back more than up forward, especially under the current structure & player availability

A lot of forwards make good backman but not many the other way, It is his marking that gets people saying he could make forward, I think he will be tried as a Ruckman and Forward over time, to see what height it could take his game too.

He is kind of unique for his output at his and position.

Guaranteed fb in the 22 under 22 until he turns 23.

I can see him going forward in the future not much chance now with both Hawkins and Cameron there but if Drunkcat is on the money and he has indicating that he has some ambitions as a forward then another club will surely offer him that opportunity we need to keep an open mind.

Reckon he set up a couple of goals with slick hands playing forward in the Collingwood game. Good wild card option for now, but also good to have up our sleeve for Hawks eventual absence. Whatever it is, just get the kid signed up long term.

He definitely did. His ability to find players in space while he was under pressure lead directly to at least 2 goals in that last quarter.

I think far more. At the end of next year, if he continues this form, with the potential revenue sharing that players get, he’d be worth $5m over 6 years. That’s what Tim Kelly got after 48 games, and he’s just a midfielder.

Tim Kelly was in a different position as in that the contract his signed was going to be last big contract.

De Koning would be a free agent with 100+ games under his belt when he goes out of contract.

I'm not convinced that there is going to be that much of an increase in the TPP.

All it takes is Carlton interested and we’d be in a losing position in the negotiation. He’d be top 5 in the Carji right now, if not top 3.

I think he will ask for a 2 year extension at $550k per year and then do a very big contract at 5-6 years asking for 800k plus at least. We’d have the money with Hawk and Danger near retirement or gone. Selwoods money goes to a new top line mid.

Sam will and should get paid.. based on current and future performance potential.
But this is also Geelong where there is a storied history of not overpaying.

So it’s gonna be interesting to see the contract dynamic. He deserves and has earned an increase… a big increase.. and stability.. but how much fits what we do!??
I think it will be interesting for sure and keeping the other suitors at bay will be a task.

I think we have a bit of an edge in re-signing him. Seems to gel with the coaches and playing group and is wrapped up in the surf Coast lifestyle

There will be huge dollars thrown at him though

I’m sure we will look after SDK and pay him fairly. Players will always get offered more to leave, but we have a strong culture and history of always being up there. Plus we offer him a lifestyle that he adores - I.e. surfing, more relaxed lifestyle - which is massive. Clubs with strong cultures like Geelong and Sydney very rarely lose players they want to keep. The only one I can think of is TK, and we know his circumstances were very unique.

watching him in the Carlton rooms after their game should hopefully crystallise his worth.
