What do we do about our small defender position??

Maybe make a case for him being slightly culpable for one. COS for two minimum. Stewie for two. An agenda against him on here from three or four posters who didn’t want him in team day one. He is a role player and every slight mistake jumped on.

Stewie who is brilliant makes one or two howlers every game but ignored because he has so many positives. Leave COS and Mullin to make mistakes and don’t jump on them

I’ll say this once. Those picking up the end of the play as a fault are ridiculous. The come back in the third was due to extremely poor midfield accountability.

Blaming the end of the line in defence is an extremely poor discussion point.

The issue was how soft our midfield was in the third quarter. Full stop.

Depends how the ball comes in.

Some of those goals were long bombs to the square and just poor defense.

That is poor last line defending.

Overall our defense was very good, and COS played a decent game. Held his own

Who is bashing COS? He played a decent game. Held his own. Would like to see him play all 22 games this year

You notice that we didn’t get the same free and easy midfield extraction that freo did?

The issue which people are extending to Mullin, is a total failure of the midfield to actually defend or slow down ball movement.

Not just for moments. For the entire third quarter.

Thought Mullin did well other than a couple of matchup losses in the third. There was times that he didn’t matchup on Reid, but was picked by the antagonists.

I realise he’ll likely be first out when we are at full strength, however, I like his close down speed in that defensive role. Something we don’t have very much of.

I agree with some of that but the issue is mullin is in the wrong role.

O'Connor / Bews is the only real answer and it is not a great one.

Mullin is fine when the zone defence is working and he can use his closing speed to get to a contest.

One on one he is not good and every team is going to isolate him now.

Bewsy's injured, and I'd prefer to leave MOC in the midfield for a month or so at least while Bruhn is still out. I reckon Mullin will learn to man up properly PDQ if teams start isolating him specifically. You could also play Zuth a bit deeper and Mullin on more of a HBF.

This stage of his career?? It’s his bloody third season at AFL level and is in his mid 20’s.

First gamers with no experience besides juniors are whooping him
Maybe you misunderstood my post. Most players his age were kicking a Sherrin around at 3 or 4 and have played and trained for 10-15 years and played maybe 100 plus games of Aussie Rules. Oisin has played what 40 odd games in his life.
I'm saying the club has wasted the last 2 years by trying to fast track him.
My view is that at least a solid season learning the game in the VFL would have been more beneficial.
Of course we will never know.

Just watched the replay of 3rd quarter. One goal Jack Henry was Reid's opponent. Reid lead back towards goal then doubled back to lead forward and lost Henry. Mullin stood the mark as Henry went back to the goal square.
Last of Reid's goals. Mullin was out numbered two to one at the top of the goal square, Freo tall player got the ball, Mullin left Reid to tackle the tall, tackle didn't pin the arms, so ball got to Reid. So who was the defender suppose to be on their tall forward?
Mullin still looks a bit lost, but since Kolo is out, seems Mullin is the whipping boy.

This is the 666 rule doing what it was designed to do. Cats prefer to play the plus 1 back in defence but these days you need to stall the oppersitions movement in to their forward line from centre bounces to be able to set that field, we simply didn't do that in the third quarter and we paid the price. On Mullin I agree he was not directly responsible for all 4 goals being discussed here but he still finds himself in no man's land to often he needs to tighten up on an opponent assuming this is the role he is there to play.

Why can’t he break lines from defense?? He just is a very poor reader of the game

Because he's being asked to play a lockdown role. A role which he played to aplomb, in the first half - they scored 3 goals in a half against that defence, which he was very much a part of. His disposal was also very good when he did get it, and his closing speed was elite. Our entire side was off kilter in the third. Not fair to blame that on a ten game player.

Bews barely had any disposals when he played the same role. Mullin's upside which we've seen in glimpses (Port Final as the best example), is much higher.

There are two free agents we could target to cover this spot. Starcevich and Maynard. They’d both be hard to get out of their clubs but either would be a good solution.

Mullin has what many players don't have, and that is elite pace and physicality, but he is raw.
I like it when he is in the team.
Specific small defender roles- we have 2 ideal players imho- Atkins and Clark, if Bews does not make it back, if Bruhn comes back in, if Mullin gets moved. Lot of ifs.
