That's exactly it - No side can carry a pure ruckman anymore. They need another string to their bow - whether that be link up play in the midfield, dropping into defence/behind the ball, or a threat up forward. Without any of these, the opposition ruck can do what they please without having to worry about their opposition.

I personally think we will delist Hayes at the end of the season though unless something major changes.

Rubbish. Reilly O'Brien is pretty much a pure ruckman. Ditto Goldstein and plenty of others.
Sure they might drift forward and (rarely) do something useful, but Hayes is more than capable of floating forward and taking a mark a few times a season.

Goldy is only playing because Xerri is out injured. He is at the end of a career and his type is being phased out.

RoB offers more in the centre bounce/contested situation (similar to a Lycett style ruck) - also is a far better contested mark than Hayes.

Both the above are not the current prototype for ruckmen and are playing due to lack of better options though.

Are we seriously going to compare 86-gamer Racist O'Brien and 300-gamer Todd Goldstein with 7-gamer Sam Hayes?

🤔 O'Brien is a racist? What did I miss?
To be fair it was a while ago now but tweeted some pretty disgusting crap about a Chinese tennis player.

Might have grown up since then but the nickname has stuck. Definitely seems like its something that simmers under the surface for quite a few at the Camries

Interesting... 🤔 Don't know anything about that happening

Hinkley on 360 asked who will ruck against Dees, didn’t even mention Hayes as a possible inclusion. Last qtr of the SANFL appears to have changed nothing.

It's a perfect game for Lycett to come in and for him and Teakle to get pantsed. Hayes can continue to build on his efforts around the ground and come in when Lycett and Teakle are bereft of confidence and the coaches are fed up and desperate enough to select him.

Its honestly become an elephant in the room situation now. The funny thing is that very few in the football media would even know Sam Hayes exists so they aren't going to even ask him about it.

Hayes only rucked in the last quarter because the decision was made to take Lycett out the game to rest for Friday night.
The result was still in dispute and Lycett was almost best on ground and had been jumping into the opposition ruckman all day.

At Hayes second jump he hurt the South ruckman who then rested and stayed in the forward line.
After that incident South struggled to competive in the ruck.

Only recall it happening once. One of our players should have realised and put their hand up instead. Not uncommon to give the rucks a chop out every now and then at contests.

And the one time it happened was because of the timing of an interchange

Just to point out, this isn't the first time we've been stuck with our dicks in our hands under Ken with regards to ruck situation.

2016, Trengove. 2018, Ryder being injured half that season having to sacrifice Dixon's game. 2022, and 2023. This isn't something new, quite sad really.

It's a ken hates tall players thing.

See: our midget backline.
See: our midget forwardline for the first half of Ken's tenure. The refusal to play John Butcher. Replacing a tall with a small when someone went out injured.
See: our disposal of Trengove, Howard, ladhams, Frampton, Ryder

Is this a Hinkley issue or a list manager issue?

Identifying good key position defenders and rucks seems to be an ongoing issue for us for a number of years now. Yes, list manager has done a great job identifying other positions, but perhaps there's a blind spot here.

Midget backline - who could we select from our squad right now to make it taller? Nothing stands out

Forwardline - Butcher did ok but had some serious flaws in his game. If he was half as good as this board makes him out to be, you'd think that another club would have taken a chance on him. When in form, we've played Charlie, Marshall and Georgy together on multiple occasions. Think we may have even had Fin in there as well at the same time on occasion.

Trengove was past it by the time we got rid of him.

Howard and Ladhams are the perplexing ones for me, no real reason that i'm aware of - but there has been smaller players moved on without really a lot of reasons too. Lots of rumours about Ladhams off field issues.

We wanted to keep Ryder, but he wanted a 2 year deal. With his dodgy Achilles, it was a risk the club was not willing to take. If we signed him up for 2 years and he barely played through those years, everyone here would be crucifying the club for offering two years.
