Some of these guys started forward, but that just reinforces the fact they were not fit enough and competitive enough in the ruck at the same age as Hayes is getting slammed for not dominating first ruck every week of his first 7 games.
I didn't slam him for not dominating first ruck. I slammed him for ineffectual against Mark Blicavs and Tom Stewart.

He spent ages playing as many smalls in the forward line as possible and it’s only now that we have Dixon, who’s amazing at ground level for a guy his size, and Marshall who’s a freak that kens willing to go tall.

He only likes talls who are extremely capable as smalls.

As for the rucks you named, you just gave examples of rucks known for being mobile.
We went small with the forward line because the talls we had to stand alongside Schulz were rubbish footballers.

What you want him to do, is what Richmond were doing until 2017, playing a rubbish player in the forward line simply because he's tall to maintain structure. It wasn't until they moved away from that rubbish decision, played their best players and set their game plan to match their best players that they won a flag. They then went to a two tall forward line because they picked up Tom Lynch who is actually a good footballer.

I’ve said this before and recently

Hinkley doesn’t care about hitouts, he wants his rucks to be tall midfielders.

Hayes doesn’t get clearances and doesn’t get involved in link up play like a mid.

That’s what Hinkley wants, and it’s one of the reasons he’s a s**t coach.

Yet Ken keeps a ruckman who cannot get a kick in the side. If Brynn Teakle was getting 15-20 possessions a match I could see logic in Ken's tall midfielder theory but he isn't. The only ruckman on our books who was capable of doing that now plays for Sydney. Peter Ladhams averages 17 disposals and almost 24 hit outs a game and we let him go! Admittedly Ladhams figures have improved since moving to the Swans but that is because he has assumed to role of no1 ruckman whereas at Port he was second fiddle to the now burnt out Lycett.

Hinkley's development of tall players over the years stinks. As I posted previously Todd Marshall is about the only tall who has improved in the 11 years that Hinkley has been at the helm. The list of tall players with potential who had been discarded is long and I suspect will get even longer at the end of this season. On that score alone Hinkley has to go.

First off, that is incorrect.

Secondly, a tackle stat is only recorded if the player being tackled isn't able to dispose of the ball effectively. It doesn't mean Hayes didn't lay any tackles.
Oooops, I did re-check - Hayes did get one tackle against norf. make that 1 tackle in his last three games - is he just lazy?

I think the fact that he vapes/smokes and in the pre season chad literally had a hand in his back to push him forward in running drills was probably when the club gave up on him, I love the idea of Sam and the club has failed him in some aspects but Sam hasn’t helped his cause
Where has this come from?

Yes, they don’t care about hit outs. Carr said so on Friday on SEN.

If we look at Jeremy Finlayson's stats for 2022 it is easy to see where the tall midfielder theory comes from. Finlayson got a lot of the ball when in the ruck but very few hit outs. Against Essendon in round 22 last year we lost the hit outs 50-9 but Finlayson had 25 possessions and we won by 84 points. If Ken looks at last year's tape we may see Finlayson in the ruck with Big Charlie and Marshall up forward and Teakle and Hayes on the outer.

When things arent going well, I dont think we can post the pic of Michael Wilson standing next to the Fos quote saying to be a great footy club you need to weed out the guys who breed the atmosphere of non-professionalism, then in another thread demand we have to be playing Sam Hayes. If a professional athlete who struggles for aerobic ability is punching darts in his off-time then i think these are exactly the type of players that quote is referring to.

I'm a vocal Hayes advocate but this is fair comment. Poor form from someone who had a lot of work to do to earn his spot back.

Part of me wonders am I being too harsh making this assessment based off 1 pic of a player in the off-season. But then its not really just based on that, its that by all reports he still struggles with aerobic fitness, the coaching group have gone completely off him (despite winning the Magpies B&F 2 years ago and the AFL team screaming out for a ruck option) and it would be incredibly unlikely that he just happened to have a pic taken of him sucking back on his first and last ever cigarette.

There’s obviously something more at play here, and it seems plausible its due to professionalism standards continually not being met.

It seems Dylan Williams was in the same boat but appears he got a personal trainer, started acting like a professional athlete and now is reaping the rewards.

So that we're all clear on this, this was taken in Sept 2022, at an end of season trip.
Very true, but its a huge red flag! The guy is out of breath in the first quarter, and is at walking pace by the final whistle. Club has sidelined him, and wont use him.

Doesnt take much to come to the conclusion that it might be more than just an end of season splurge.

News flash he isn't the only player on the list that likes a dart lol
lol there are pictures all over the place of much more high profile players. Broadbent used to love a dart too...Max Gawn, Hogan, Brayshaw...even Zinedine Zidane lol.

Probably got delisted for it because the cult. I'm no support of the habit, it's horrendous. It also clearly has negative effects on the body but of all the vices players get up to it's really only the tip of the iceberg.

Agree with this, but the way I look at it is, he's going to improve our team whether its just for the next six games or till the end of the year who cares. I'd still play a guy who can impact than a carbon rod like Teakle despite his effort.

Laying a tackle and being awarded a stat for tackling is not the same thing.

He has been stuffed around by the coaches, however his lack of fitness is on him.

He has the natural rucking ability and the chance to earn several million dollars in a career if he could run around the ground for a couple hours.

He has been in the system quite a while but it seems like he doesn’t want it hard enough.

Contract wise I think 3 legitimate rucks on a teams list is one too many unless they have other strings to their bow. I think all 3 ruckmen, Lycett, Hayes and Teakle have contracts expiring at the end of this year?

Who knows, perhaps they want Sam, as he also wishes, to develop his forward craft a bit more while giving Teakle the opportunity to show what he has as a more defensive ruckman.
