I would also take up smoking in the off-season last year if I was him and consistently treated with absolute disdain by the coaching staff. In what universe would you blame the guy for being unprofessional after the career he has had here. Dominated the SANFL, clearly our best ruckman 2 years ago left to rot for years- THEN, to be given a chance only because Hinkley had no other option. To do a good job and get the record for most hit outs in your first 7 games was only to be dropped for a no ruckman system and replaced in the mid season draft for a guy who had played 6 games of senior football up to that point. Can you blame him for throwing in the towel? I absolutely don’t.Waiting for the human cry of.....'it's hinkleys poor treatment that caused him to smoke'.
Guaranteed they'll blame hinkley for this.
I'd love to see him give some first class treatment to our midfielders, but his lack of presence around the ground in the 2nds is on him alone.Part of me wonders am I being too harsh making this assessment based off 1 pic of a player in the off-season. But then its not really just based on that, its that by all reports he still struggles with aerobic fitness, the coaching group have gone completely off him (despite winning the Magpies B&F 2 years ago and the AFL team screaming out for a ruck option) and it would be incredibly unlikely that he just happened to have a pic taken of him sucking back on his first and last ever cigarette.
There’s obviously something more at play here, and it seems plausible its due to professionalism standards continually not being met.
It seems Dylan Williams was in the same boat but appears he got a personal trainer, started acting like a professional athlete and now is reaping the rewards.

So did Shane Warne. Ken Hinkley is our John BuchananScott Hodges liked a dart
Can a player be delisted at this stage in the season and if so would he be eligible for the mid season draft.Sam is now the poster boy for a mid season trade period.
Looks like his papers are stamped, should be given a chance to find a new home.
So did Barry Robran but that is not an excuse for Sam Hayes. He's in a fully professional era so he should be maximising his chances to get fit enough for AFL and fulfill his potential.Scott Hodges liked a dart
If a durry in the off-season is a professionalism issue there's a fukcton of players with a problem. So did Barry Robran but that is not an excuse for Sam Hayes. He's in a fully professional era so he should be maximising his chances to get fit enough for AFL and fulfill his potential.
That's great!Waiting for the human cry of.....'it's hinkleys poor treatment that caused him to smoke'.

Collingwood has proved that rucks are over rated.
They have not looked back since trading Brodie Grudy and with injured ruckmen since round three, have been playing Billie Frampton.
Just follow Geelong lead, they trade in lowly rank ruckmen every couple of years.

Yup, when people say rukmen have lesser worth, they don't (shouldn't) mean that a good one doesn't help win football games, what they mean is you shouldn't pay high capital for one.Yet look at the 2020 prelim or 2017 elimination final as a counter argument. Nankervis and Vardy of all players destroyed Lycett and Ryder respectively and were key reasons we lost. I reckon a good ruck can be a huge advantage, and whilst Ryder was a good ruck, he had a howler that night.
There is a difference between indulging in a dart when you're a legendary full forward performing at an extremely high level and indulging in a dart when you're a developing ruckman who can't get a game because of concerns about his ability to get around the ground.
I still think Hayes should have been given a much more extensive run at it over the past couple of seasons, but it's not a great example of getting the best out of yourself.

but let's not pretend that once he's off the list he's going to another club and will embarrass Hinkley by becoming a top shelf ruckman. If he's serious then he won't be on the lung biscuits whilst his career is at a cross roads.
This part I disagree with, rucks are the most late blooming position with plenty of scope for a mature age recruit to flip the switch and dominate.
Hayes has some runs on the board as a tap ruckman and I could easily see a club with a stronger culture getting him fit and firing. We haven't developed a ruckman since Brogan (unless you count a season and a half from Lobbe before he fell off a cliff)
