SAM Mitchell, one of the AFL’s most decorated footballers of the modern era, will bring an end to his illustrious playing career at the completion of this season.

The Herald Sun can reveal Mitchell, who turns 35 in October, will soon announce his retirement, but remains committed to chasing a finals berth for the Eagles this year before moving into an assistant coach’s role under Adam Simpson.

I don't know how trustworthy Glenn McFarlane is, but all the signs have been pointing to him retiring this year.

Congratulations on fantastic career Sam, and while you've only spent one season with us, its been a honour to watch you play.

Shit news if true. Was hoping to see a full season of him with NN at the new stadium. Champion nonetheless and will forever be our 4th Brownlow Medallist.

Is this the first of many retirement announcements to come? Hopefully we don't go too far the other way.

I don't mind. He would only have another year as a player anyway and I don't see us winning a flag next year given the experience profile we will likely have in 2018.

Either way eagles will gain will keep a highly talented player or a coach full of football brilliance. But in my view would like to see him go one more year, our younger players that will be running around would learn a lot more off him if they are playing by his side. And injuries that we have had to our ruck division have really cost us this year, he would be a better player for us with NN. Fingers crossed he plays on but everything in the media points otherwise....

Would've liked to have seen Naitanui palming down a centre bounce down Mitchell's throat in the new Perth Stadium but I guess it's not to be.

Still really can't believe that he pulled on the blue and gold. His trade last year must've been one of the most surprising in AFL history.

His limited stint here just further exposed how many dumb footballers we carry. He is always still one step ahead of the play (whereas alot of our players are reactive as ****) and sure, what he tries to do doesn't come off all the time but he has a pretty sharp mind that reads the game so well so hopefully, it will translate over into coaching.
