people havent had enough of sam. he will keep getting headlines and people agreeing with his views as long as hes commenting on football and things surrounding it. you vastly underestimate how prevalent the views sam holds are in australia if you think people are sick of him.

Welcome to country is over used and not needed. I agree 100% with Sam.

No one should get any special treatment for thing that happened that we had no control over.

I feel comments like this indicate that people don't understand "Welcome to Country".

It's not about making you feel bad for what happened 200 years ago or trying to blame you for it.

Welcome to Country was something that happened for thousands of years prior to colonisation. Aboriginal Australians were here for 40,000 years and divided into hundreds of people groups/'countries'. Any time that one people group/county had to visit another for a significant event or to trade, etc - a welcome to country ceremony would be conducted to welcome them - a formal way of inviting them in, celebrating their presence and saying "welcome, it's good to have you".

Today, traditional custodians (i.e. descendants of the people that originally occupied that bit of land) come out and perform a 'welcome to country' to say "we welcome you". Not only does this keep ancient traditions alive (which is improtant for identity, belonging and general awareness) but it is not an aggressive or blame based act - it is a traditional, welcoming, hospitable and conciliatory act.

I have no idea why anyone would be angry about it.

The referendum depending on how it goes, could signal to the rest of the world, that this is one of most racist countries in existence. Shameful.

Stumbled in here and completely on the anti Sam wagon, he is an idiot.

I would say I hate people making out like Australia is so terrible and racist. Which countries are not? We have a ways to go to mend our past, but we are not alone on that path and the vast majority of countries in the world have significantly more ground to make up.

It’s because Australians are naturally racist people, with unbelievable levels of ignorance to indigenous people.

Yep, this is the same bloke who bailed out Polly Farmer years ago and he was not only his idol, but also an Aboriginal, Newman said of Farmer "he was my great inspiration in my football life — and almost my life — if you look back at where he came from, what he achieved, how he achieved it and why he was the person he was, he had a great love of the game and what he brought to it from his indigenous background was absolutely amazing". This doesn't sound like the words of a racist to me. I think people just love to hate Sam and the hysteria on here is extraordinary. I've already posted this one on another thread, but it rings true yet again "No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth" - Plato.
I wonder how Sam would react to Polly if he welcomed Sam to his country?

Australia is far far down on the list on what the rest of the world is thinking about.

Most wouldn't even know where it is on the map.
It will make headlines around the world.
What, all of us, or are you planning to name names in a subsequent post?
I don’t think I can name 10-12 million people.

I've been to last two Friday nights where people have stood quietly and respectfully for the Welcome to Country which lasts, what ?, two minutes maximum. It's actually quite a nice moment.

What I don't get is why people care, soooo much, about those two precious minutes to go as far as to boo ????
Booing is too far, and quite frankly juvenile. It doesn't matter what your reason is, it's a childish act.

However, and I can't speak for everyone here, but I believe a lot of people's critiquing of the 'Welcome to country' is due to the apparent virtue signalling.

I don't think the vast majority has a problem with Indigenous Australians, or a traditional 'Welcome to Country' ceremony. There's obviously some racist idiots out there like always, but I don't believe they're in the majority.

It's a moving event, and anything that allows the masses to be greater educated on the history of our country is to be celebrated.

For me personally, growing up in a low socioeconomic and multicultural area, it's fascinated me since I was a kid. I feel blessed to be able to say that I grew up never seeing 'colour', I only ever saw people, which is a lesson that so many never learn, and I'm grateful for that everyday.

From what I can gather, the backlash from many is due to the alleged 'tokenism' by the media, and in this case, the footy industry.

Past players, commentators & pundits alike who have proven/allegedly been racist in the past, now pretending to care about a ceremony and the significance it holds. It's like having Wayne Carey on white ribbon night (Nice one Seven)

Alternatively, past players, commentators & media alike who have never actively shown any care or interest in the history of Australia, Indigenous Australians, or the struggle they have faced/facing. It comes back to the belief that you're only pretending to care now, because you'll be crucified if you don't.

Basically, to many the whole thing feels disingenuous. I'd liken it to how many approach the topic of asylum seekers in this country. The belief of "I'm all for refugees...just not near me", which is a belief held by so many.

Unfortunately, people hate being told what to do. It's incredibly difficult to get millions to peacefully co-exist at the best of times, and particularly in today's society where everyone has an avenue to voice their opinion, people are very quick to call out what they see as hypocrisy.

I don't think there is a fix to these scenarios. You're damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The best we can do is continue to educate ourselves and the next generation on the history of this country, and hopefully we can one day reach a point where division is a monarch of the past.

Ah yes the old “one of my best friends is <insert race here>, I can’t be racist!!”
I always like to spin that one around to those types of claims.
”One of my best friends is a racist, that proves I like racists!”

The dispossession of much of Victoria from 1835 onwards, was so quick and near absolute, murderous and savage, that it astounded most other parts of the empire at the time. It was like an unstoppable genocide machine rolling through the state, demolishing aborigines, their lands, their gathering sites, their children, their elders, their world.

An aborigine visiting Melbourne CBD today, for the first time, Marvellous Melbourne it was once called without irony, an aborigine who knows their history from their ancestors, and even reading some white folk history, would be further insulted to see the streets named Latrobe, Lonsdale, Swanston etc. As if the dispossession is celebrated.

I'm not sure from my white bloke mates that dispossession is celebrated. Perhaps worse, they don't even know about it. Ignorance. Lack of curiosity. Lack of care. Not even forgotten history. It's a covered up history.

So when you see that fella welcoming you to his country, that was stolen by means catostrophic murder of people and culture, why not feel inspired and grateful that despite everything, they still extend the welcome. What a fine and honourable gesture. Be grateful for it.

Sam is an horrific racist. End of story.

He is honestly a shit bloke. Needs to stop having his opinions broadcasted, obviously has no empathy or sympathy for other people.

I don't care too much about the Welcome to Country and I feel the same way about the National Anthem (imo these both should be left to international sports, not national ones.), but I understand why we have them. Also, it causes no one harm to have them there either, no idea why people like Sam get so outraged over it. Neither go for that long and you're not forced to watch it.

However during any Anzac ceremony you 100% must observe it, stand up, remain silent and not dare do anything else lest some bootlicking bogan abuses the sh*t out of you. What if you don’t agree with Anzac Day? Tough luck - stand up or be abused.

Last year, an NRL fan spoke during the minute’s silence and was punched repeatedly and was ejected from the game
He did more than "speak" during the minute's silence.

He screamed at the top of his voice "LET'S GO SMASH THESE C****!!! WOOH!! YEOWWW!!!"
