#16 was my first NFL idol when I started following the NFL. By all accounts he's a cracking bloke, and this was an enjoyable read :

I love this part of it :

A "SportsCenter" poll asked viewers to vote for either Montana or Brady as the greatest quarterback and this set Jordan off. At that moment Brady only had three titles and Montana had four, but the idea of the undefeated nature of time hit Jordan hard. "They're gonna say Brady because they don't remember Montana," he said. "Isn't that amazing?"

Doesn't count they had the week off. If it does count then the whole thing is mute as KC won after having the week off after playing the niners.

Does that mean I don't have to cheer for both the Seahawks and Cowboys to lose week one now?

You mean I don't need an excuse?

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports ex-Broncos QBs coach Klint Kubiak has accepted the "top role" on coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive staff in San Francisco.

Whether that "top role" is offensive coordinator or passing-game coordinator is unclear. Shanny went without an OC in 2022 after Mike McDaniel departed for the Dolphins. Bobby Slowik was the passing-game coordinator but has since accepted Houston's coordinator gig. Gary's son, Klint served as the Vikings' OC in 2021 and is obviously well-versed in the Shanahan/Kubiak system. It should be a seamless transition for both parties, but Shanahan will obviously remain the 49ers' play-caller.

Ok who you got coming back....

Free Agents:
  • QB Jimmy Garoppolo
  • DB Jimmie Ward But this depends on what happens with Gipson
  • EDGE Samson Ebukam
  • CB Emmanuel Moseley Coming off ACL maybe a 1 year prove it and also makes him more affordable.
  • OT Mike McGlinchey Someone will pay him and that's fair, he ain't as bad as people make out, but out of 49er price range regardless.
  • LB Azeez Al-Shaair Too much money invested in LB to bring him back
  • K Robbie Gould Risky but time to get younger and cheaper at the position.
  • OL Daniel Brunskill
  • DT Hassan Ridgeway
  • DE Kerry Hyder
  • TE Tyler Kroft
  • DT Maurice Hurst
  • DB Tashaun Gipson
  • QB Josh Johnson
  • DE Jordan Willis
  • LS Taybor Pepper
  • TE Ross Dwelley
  • C Jake Brendel
  • CB Jason Verrett Would love to see it but I think the journey ends here.
  • DB Tarvarius Moore
  • DE Charles Omenihu Most productive of the outside guys who can play inside so is versatile for the money.
Restricted FAs:
  • LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
  • DT Kevin Givens
  • OL Colton McKivitz May end up being the clear RT starter if McGlinchey is gone and they can't see a better more affordable FA.
Juan Jennings is an ERFA so he is an automatic return.

I've bolded who I hope they can get back and some comments on why I don't think they should re-sign some others.

The challenge will be filling out both lines. Once again they have starters on the offensive line hitting FA, but the line needs upgrading and I'm not sure they have the cattle in the barn to come in and be automatic starters let alone upgrades.

Defensive line was a little bit overrated down the stretch. They pooled a lot of resources there but other than Bosa and Armstead no one was better than average. They probably bring a few back from Hurst, Hyder, Givens, Willis etc, depends on what the market says, but they do need Jackson to come on and a big fatty in the middle (and for Kinlaw to rip off the bust tag).

49ers have not a lot of cap (8M, but they were 6M over at this time last year), lots of draft picks but no premium ones.

Think they will hit safety, space eating DT and offensive line in the draft early as there are openings for starters. Probably bring in mid priced FAs to address these same positions as well.

After that who knows, Shanahan might draft 3 rbs in the 3rd.

Edit: I've marked Ward as a want to come back more than I think he is back guy, Bosa has his extension to consider and maybe Aiyuk's as well.

Sudfield and Mullens maybe...but it would be a waste of cap if they are 3rd stringers.

Put them on the coaching staff for 3m each and sign them as street FAs when inevitably when the injuries start to mount.

Draft a couple rookies late I reckon.

Position of need this off season, walk out boom box holder guy

Get the next running back they select in round 3 to do it since he never does anything else.

QB update.

Purdy still waiting for the swelling to go down before he can have surgery. He can throw 3 months after his surgery with a 6 month recovery.

Trey will get all the snaps OTAs and mini camps and all things going well he'll be the starter with Purdy being ready for his chance when it arrives (cause we can't keep QBs healthy).

49ers are pretty much exactly where they were 12 months ago with the exception that Brock Purdy is a thing.

Lance still has to prove his franchise QB prospects. Purdy's injury/delayed surgery has Lance as the anointed starter now going into training camp.
Jimmy is gawn.
No veteran behind Lance.
Purdy is now known to the NFL world.

Need a rookie and a vet.
