IIRC jesse smith was already a crock when St Kilda picked him up. Gumbleton is fit, and he is a key forward. Worth a lot more.
Jesse was completely ****ed when the Saints got him. They thought they could inject his screwed ankle with a gel to replace the cartilage only to find he was beyond help. Poor bugger.

Ive mentioned it before but I'd spew if we lost Gumbleton for anything other than something tied in with the Caddy deal. There's too much potential to be thrown away for another teams rejects or dud picks. He is integral to our structure in the years to come, especially if plans of Hurley going back come to fruition. If the club plans to stick with Hurley playing forward a 3-way trade for Caddy could be an option, something along the lines of:

Gumbleton + Bombers 2nd rounder + Gold Coast 2nd rounder to Adelaide
Tippett to Gold Coast
Caddy to Essendon

If anyone owed a club something it is Gumbleton.

And if, in your opinion, other clubs only rate him enough to offer effectivey a third rounder, then they likely would not be offering much money or incentive to leave.

So which is it? either clubs want him and will offer him incentive to leave and a decent pick to Essendon, or clubs don't and he'll stay at Essendon?

Not a bad option to test the waters, as he is surplus to our requirements.

Essendon offered Gumby a one year contract - Do you expect clubs to give up a high draft pick.

If the care he has received at Essendon is anything to do with his lengthy recovery, maybe not.
I thought there was talk that a couple of the earlier procedures weren't done well?

Think you are referring to the club taking two years to detect his back injury that caused recurring hammy issues - probably should have been picked up in the first year.

I think this is a relatively win-win trade. Both players fill a void and would be afforded more opportunities.

Gumby strengthens our KPP stocks and Suban gives you a classy ball user. I've said it before but Subes is best suited as an inside mid, has the mongrel and the booming kick to send the ball forward with great effect.

That said, I do have a soft spot for Suban and he too has been cruelled a bit by injury. With some continuity and a consistent role I think he could really be something quite special.

I would do this trade in a heartbeat.

Will become one of our most important players next season, with Hurley likely to switch back into defence.

Wouldn't accept anything less than a first rounder, due to his importance. Is probably worth a second rounder all things considered, though.

This is how I see it playing out:

Half the comp will offer essendon their second round pick for Gumby.

Out of fear of missing out on him, the remaining clubs will offer essendon their first round pick.

Don't be surprised if in the end you land draft pick 1 (as well as Caddy and Goddard) for him as the entire league goes into an unprecedented bidding war for him because of his perceived importance to essendon in 2013.

I have it on authority from a very reliable source so bookmark it etc.

If you wana get in early and avoid disappointment we'll take Murphy and your first rounder

So essentially this is the same trade as Cale Hooker and pick 31.

And Essendon fans wonder why nobody takes their ideas of getting Caddy seriously. At least we've progressed from Essendon fans expecting Gold Coast to just bend over and take it. Now you're expecting a 3rd club to be the one that gets completely done over.

Ok here's a tip. Substitute Gumbleton for Mitch Brown (Geelong first round pick in 2008, probably played as many games as Gumbleton in the AFL and would have considerably better VFL performance) in this scenario and see how ridiculous it looks.

Needs to go somewhere else and hard-reset his career goals/expectations.

I reckon he MAY still have something to contribute, somewhere, but at Essendon he'll never be what they drafted him to be, and that's got to be hard.
Huh?
This was the first time in... umm, ever... that he's shown any signs of being a goal-kicking forward. When he came in in 2010 he was woefully rusty but eventually found a niche as a wide-ranging leading target. Has always had the hands & pace; now he's got the size & boot to match. And I don't think he'd have any trouble pinch-hitting in the ruck.

IMHO there's a good 10-12 sides that a fit Gumbleton would get a game with most weeks. The upside is large; at least as large as the risk/s.

Gumbleton is not fit...he played 6 games this year.

He might be fit for Gumbleton standards but thats not saying alot.

I think Essendon would get a pick in the 30's to 40's.

Played a total of 10 games bendigo and essendon combined. We were extremely conservative with him and with a full pre-season in him and that back issue behind him i'm excited.

And didn't they screw poor young Allen out of his medical bills, in order to get Smith across?
One screwed-up club.
I guess some clubs will do what they think needs to be done when pushing for a flag. Blokes like Allen get the short end of the stick. Screwed/

I'm in the camp that thinks Gumby doesn't owe Essendon anything. For all he knows, they mismanaged his injuries and he might have had better luck at another club. If they delisted him, I bet you WC or Freo would have picked him up.

The only person Gumbleton has to look after his himself, and that means he should get the best/longest contract he can, at a club he wants to play for.

If he was to be traded (and I hope he doesn't), I'd imagine we'd try and package him to get a pick upgrade to try to get the Caddy deal.

Gumby+2nd for a first rounder for example. Something like that.

The only way you will obtain a first round pick eg top 12 which is want the Gold coast will want is to give up something of Quality, not players like Gumbleton/Hooker etc, Geelong/Carlton/St Kilda are probably in a stronger position depending on their level of interest in Caddy.

Why won't Essendon give him more than a 1 year contract? They must still have concerns. Gee they offered Mark McVeigh a one year contact for goodness sake.

No, and that was not my point.

Someone suggested that clubs wouldn't be prepared to offer anything for him, yet pay him a large salary.

I was suggesting that that was a bit contradictory.

Of course they have concerns. The guy has played 28 games in 6 years. He is likely one injury away from the scrapheap. 1 year is fair enough. But obviously I can understand Scott wanting more security, especially if he has had other offers of it.
That being said, I'd like to think if all it took was 2 years to keep him happy, they would bend and offer it to him. Scott would be pretty nervous of Danihers's impact 12 months from now.
