My mate works for as part of a player management company and he reckons most player managers are asking their clients to sign their power of eterny to their folks. The reason for this is so that the players are not lying to the media or their clubs about being approached.

Don't know if this is happening with Scully but I would suggest where there's smoke there's fire.

Scully has said that there's been no discussion with his family, himself, or his management, so which third parties do you refer ?

The only information Sheahan has from the MFC is that they believe he'll stay.

Is there a remote chance that people will take Scully's comments on face value ?

I didnt refer to any third party - Mike Sheehan did. I presume he means solicitors or a trusted family friend or something? I must admit I find it incredible that GWS wouldnt have done some form of sounding out yet.

Others would contend that Melb are so spooked at the prospect of losing him that Scully's market price is already at a premium. And it's a valid point.

I agree with this - I cant see an offer from Melbourne getting significantly better by the end of the year. I cant see him waiting all season just to re-sign with Melbourne.

He is already under plenty of pressure why on earth would he want to play with the contract cloud over his head all year?

He does not have to do a 4-5 year contract just a 2 year one to take the pressure off and get out of the danger zone.

Am I the only one who can see why he's putting off contract talks?

He's a young, up and coming star worth a lot to the club. He's only going to improve as a player and he's only going to become more valuable to the club throughout the year. Why sign now for one amount when in 22 weeks he'll probably be worth paying a lot more?

Doesn't mean he's planning on leaving, just means he and/or his management are smart enough to wait till he'll get the biggest contract he can get from Melbourne.

Exactly right

I don't know if he'll stay or go (gut feel is he'll stay)

But this point is glossed over by those who WANT Scully to be leaving and have made up their mind

All the talk of ".....whatever helps you sleep at night" from a personal perspective is crap. Football does personally not worry me in that regard.

I'm stating my point of view because it's what I think - not what I hope

That's simply not true - the new media deal will be negotiated this year which is expected to increase revenue to the AFL and the clubs and therefore enable an increase in the TPP. And the AFLPA is on record that they want a bigger share of the media deal money which will increase the increase in the TPP.

Right now it's roughly $8M and Scully's new contract with MFC right now would have to be negotiated within that limit. The TPP may rise by $1M or more depending on the media deal and the AFLPA demands - the AFL knows it's sitting on a restraint of trade time-bomb and will have to negotiate generously with the AFLPA. Scully's new contract is certain to come out of a bigger pie - we don't know how much bigger yet - it could easily mean at least $100K/year more to him. Why would he rush?

Tom Scully may be tempted by mega-bucks from GWS that MFC can't match but the final MFC offer can't be tabled until the new TPP is known. Scully would be mad to sign now under those conditions.

Then why are your opinions more credible than ours?

i think he is approaching the topic a lot more reasonably then many people

you know, thinking rationally and not making any assumptions :thumbsu:

I doubt Scully would sign any contracts with GWS until someone else notable did. Would you waste five years at a dead end club being the no one player tagged every week. So far I doubt western sydney have actually signed anyone that is decent if anyone at all, Murphy won't go, Swan and Thomas won't go and I doubt Pendlebury will go either.

I understand this but there are some very simple ways around it.

If Scully's new contract is say 7% of the entire salary cap, he could say that he wants 7% of any future increased amount under the cap.

He could also put a clause in which allows him to negotiate for more money once the increase is announced.
