Scully's Already Signed with GWS: Eddie

And if I was a President hoping to deflect attention off the far likelier possibility that one of my own players will get snaffled, I'd be doing the same thing.

Eddie is shrewd.

As for Scully, not happy with his management, if he is at all human this will affect his football.

It's actually a good point you make.

If this continues to grow legs it will really put a young player under the football world's microscope and couldn't be beneficial to his football. And in those circumstances someone close to him would surely advise him to recommit to the footy club to ease the pressure. He'll obviously be able to negotiate a good contract from Melbourne, so there'll be no reason not to sign - unless he's going.

I reckon if he doesn't sign soon he's gone. I feel it in my bones. Frankly, if he doesn't give an indication soon that he wants to stay then I wouldn't play the ****. **** him. I know the club won't do it, but I'd have him run around at Casey.

The way Dean Bailey stormed out of the coaches box while your team WAS IN FRONT, I'm sure the coaching staff would have conjured up a loss to Freo if Jordie didn't slot that goal.

Glad YOU are sure, must make it so

Humourous how Melbourne were the laughing stock AND the easy beats, yet they also tanked

But you were wrong about the mcmahon thing..you had another out the next week.

This is what you get for cheating.

Justice for mine if he goes.

Hopefully it is a distraction all year with his manager refusing to confirm or deny the rumour ala Ablett!

Cool story bro - only problem is we would have got Scully with our first pick anyway, as we were no doubt the worst team in the league.

Anyway, what a surprise to see the Collingwood president fueling the media fire surrounding a player from another team thus taking the spotlight off players from his own team.

No doubt it's a smart move by Eddie - the distractions that would come with SWAN TO GWS or PENDLEBURY TO GWS would have been quite damaging to his teams season.

how would the afl justify not giving mebourne at least the number 1 draft pick. Here is a guy who was a number 1 draft pick, and a good one at that, only going into his 2nd season.

How stupid are some of you. You will very likely get tier 2 compensation. So a pick directly after your first round pick in the year you choose to use it. So in reality if you decide once again to go the tank for a whole season (again) it will effectively be what you got in 09.

However the reason why you wont directly get the first pick is because it's not one of the tiers of compensation. TBH i think its very fair indeed considering how brisbane got ripped off with an end of first rounder on rischa and adelaide on bock.

Who the hell else would tank? It is the easy beats that tank to ensure the draft bounty. Funnily enough this year the easy beats pushed to win games like they did pre draft and PP.

Rumour and innuendo.

So far there is no evidence at all that he has signed, and to further prove my point last year the rumours floating around were that Petterd had signed with GC halfway through the season, and we know how that turned out...

We can't do much about it if he goes, Tom is entilted to live his life the way he wants to, a lot of people seem to have forgotten this. But we don't even know how much he has been offered (if he has been offered which we've seen no proof of either, although chances are he has). But, if he has been offered a huge contract and he accepts it then there is going to be massive pressure and expectations on him right from his first game to live up to his salary. At Melbourne he will still get a great salary (admittedly not as much) but the pressure won't be the same and he'll be adble to develop naturally.
It's a huge risk for GWS to tie up so much of their salary cap up with what is effectively a first year player, it's a massive risk.

If he goes I'll have a cry in my wheeties because I think he'll be a gun, but all the clubs agreed to this so there isn't much we can do.

Out of interest when was the last big name first year player who left their club for huge money after just one or two seasons?

It very rarely happens

I can think of Frank Marchesani and Phillip Walsh......both well before the days of salary caps and drafts and both turned out to be duds.....

Any others?

Nathan Buckley?

Be staggered if Scully was signed. GWS have dibs on the best youngsters in the land and would have thought the big names they would be after would be more experienced....Swann, Pendlebury, Montagna, Bartels...types.

I reckon Lenny Hayes is an outside chance, spend the last couple of years in his home state.

It would be amazing if any of those you mentioned would ever play a final at GWS, too old.

Scully is exactly the target they should pay big $$ for, has his best in front of him and has 10 years of footy left.

Was Scully a 'tainted tanking' priority pick?

Would be justice IMO if they lost him for a normal end of first round pick, he isn't G Ablett Jrn.

“They (GWS) are probably geeing up my boys (Dane) Swan, (Scott) Pendlebury, (Dale) Thomas (too).”

and thats's the golden point in extra time.

the clubs signed up to it and essentially thought "it will happen to someone else, another star from another club will be signed up. not ours".

All the GC signing rumours last season came true, to my supprise I must say.

Sheeds may have a 'baby bomber' strategy?

I dont think any supporter likes the process.

No they didn't. Riewoldt, Pavlich, Hurley, Beams were a few of the players that were linked to the Gold Coast throughout the year.

You're right in that the rumours that still remained at the end of the season mainly turned out to be true, but the majority of the rumours in the early days were incorrect.

nathan buckley??

rischitelli and bock were only worth a first round pick, i actually thought that was very fair compensation

ablett's was questionable as he was the best player in the league for three seasons

the thing with tom is that he could be anything, he might even be the best player melbourne has ever had.... yet a number 1 pick taken the draft prior gains a club a compensation of pick 18 or something?? that is ridiculous

Boom tish!!

Didnt quite turn out to be a dud either.

Although to be fair he did tell the Lions from Day 1 that he was only going to be there for a year.

exactly, nothing wrong with what buckley did, he didn't want to play footy there... which was understandable

but at least he told the club

if this turns into another ablett saga and fractures melbourne, i don't think i'll be able to forgive tom

him leaving will be bad enough

I had already listened to that thanks. There's quite a difference between saying GWS might have being 'geeing up' a list of players and that a player has signed for 3 million in his first year - I wonder which comment will receive more attention from the media and create more headlines?

Yup, that's true, but I was just pointing out that Eddie didn't distract from his own players, as he did in fact mention them, no matter how small a allusion.

As a Melbourne supporter with all my natural bias showing I will be devasted if Scully goes to GWS - we've been bereft of stars since Flower and Scully is a certainty to be the star we've longed for. There is no doubt that it would hurt our future premiership chances in a big way and that's all I care about.

I don't think it necessarily helps Eddie's case reporting this - surely, if true, it makes GWS a more attractive option for his players.

If Scully leaves it will be for massive coin - Tier 1 compensation is a certainty. But even that is not really adequate - Port offered us pick 8 & 9 for pick 2 (Trengove) in 2009 and we turned it down, as Richmond did with Sydney, picks 6 & 14 for pick 3 (Martin). There's a premium on stars and everyone knows it.

I can understand the "karma" call, Melbourne did exploit an imperfect but well-meaning AFL rule to get Scully to the club no matter the denials people post here. I fully support our approach - we would've been culpable to do otherwise. But what the AFL giveth ...
