SEASON 2024

When are the league going to grow some balls and force powelltown to pull the pin. We will get to 3 days before round 1 and there will be a new fixture and it will completely screw all Div 1 clubs

6 players at training the last few weeks.
No netballers
Lots of clearances out. Just call it already
The biggest issue is whether Powelltown has 55-60 senior players committed and ready to go right now.
If not, pull the rip cord and put them into recess for the year.

Clubs had up to March the 1st to submit their teams for the upcoming season. Powelltown must have strong confidence in the ability to field two teams for 2024, or at least a strong indication.

Has any BF posters actually been out to a Powelltown training session and seen first hand how many are training.Hopefully a Outer East official has and the reason why they are still on the fixture.

From what I Understand YG haven't got an issue with numbers however depth could be the issue.

Their depth wasn’t great the last couple of years either and doesn’t look like they’ve signed a lot of walk up 1s players + I presume a couple more of the ex-Lilydale boys have dropped off/retired.
As someone at the club said to me last year - we have guys playing seniors that would have struggled to get a game in the reserves 10 years ago.

Powelltown done
Announcement on Tuesday
If this is the case, and for Football in general I hope it isn't, I think there are a couple of regular contributors to this forum who need to have a good hard look at themselves!
The glee shown in a lot of the comments previously when ANY club is in trouble is quite disgusting!
All clubs have hard times, and when others pile on it isn't helpful in any way, and has probably caused more harm.
How about instead of openly clapping your hands with joy, put yourselves in that position and imagine how you would feel.
It is a truly sad day for everyone when a club has to make a decision like that - at the very least have some compassion for those long term, hard-working club people who have given their all for their club to survive - premierships or no premierships!

Isn’t it a case of “play stupid games, win stupid prizes?”

While I feel for the community and supporters at the club you reap what you sow

They took the piss out of the salary cap and bought in questionable characters all out of desperation for success.

This is not a new phenomenon either.

Coach gets senior job based on the players he can bring to the club.
Coach brings in a bunch of his own loyal players, most commanding decent coin.
Club goes well with these guys and rises up the ladder.
Then the coach departs (usually another club has head hunted him with a big bikkies offer to get him so he and his mercenary crew will come across).
Loyal mercenary crew depart and join coach's new club.
Your club now has a dearth of quality senior players and you have to spend up to replace them.
In some cases, fringe players have walked because they got pushed out and have found a new home and the bridge has been burned so they don't come back.
The club slides down the ladder ... unless they can find a coach with his own little army of mercenaries.

Unfortunately, the supporters of these clubs feel the greatest effect and it hits them hardest when their source of winter passion is threatened like it is for Powelltown supporters. Then again, local football stopped being a case of players from a suburb or town squaring off against their local adversaries long ago when clubs started buying up players back in the 80s or 90s.

Yep pretty good summary but will continue to happen 😊

Not a bad summation but I would venture that in the case of a club like Powelltown, the route was probably taken - at least to some extent - by necessity.

The true causes of these issues goes a long way back before hiring a mercenary and his team. Really, that was probably just buying time.

Powelltown is a tiny speck on the map with no population and no juniors. Any surrounding areas with population have multiple clubs of their own.

We’re probably getting toward a century since when the town peaked. It barely exists as a place, let alone having a football club that represents it.

I think this just is a case of sad inevitability and they’ve probably done very well to last this long.

Their focus should be on finding a nearby club through which they can keep something alive - perhaps not a merger, but somewhere their records and history are at least kept and preserved. And most importantly, that will actively welcome the supporters and people that are left. Most clubs are rapt to get any new people or volunteers through the door, so it should be able to happen.

Seriously if powelly shuts up shop who is to blame?
They have battled on for many many years and always found a way to get two sides up, if true this could be the end no coming back. Two flags in Two years now nothing someone needs to be held accountable.
You always knew you were going to get a smack in the head when you went up to powelly to play back in the day

According to players there was a committee meeting last night to make the final decision.
Its very quiet out there.
