With McCartin possibly in the forward line then Cox must have a lot of faith in one of our key defenders who has not played yet.

Also we need a bigger emphasis on winning the clearances. In the big games our lack of emphasis on that really kills us.

McCartin refreshing his forward experience during preseason aims to improve him as a key defender.

No it's not you don't land the ball on the goals , you'd be a real deefence type
With all due respect...

Just back on the TMcCartin forward thing, perhaps it is just an insurance policy, given it sounds like Logan hasn't even started full training yet, and unlikely to for a few more weeks yet, and McLean is only just running and doing laps (no matchplay). You could also apply this to Ladhams as well, given he played forward in the match sim yesterday.

I wonder how much, if at all, this line-up in the match sim is indicative of Cox's plans for the Opening Round game.

There's a lot to like about it IMO.

Have made no secret I'd love to see Mills, Heeney & Rowbottom being our main midfield trio, with Warner spending more time forward. I'd like us to be more open to a smaller forward line with more speed and pressure, so the Cleary inclusion with only two talls is promising. And McKirdy suggested that Paton & Florent will be vying for the same spot, and whether that's true or not I don't know, but if nothing else it will surely mean someone like Florent is made more accountable for his place in the team.

I suppose the questions that remain would be over: the talls in the forward line if, say, three of them are available; all of the flankers, most of whom aren't even named in this starting 18; and the 'surplus' mids like Sheldrick & Adams, and whether there's a spot for either.

Fox > Paton
Jmac > Lloyd
Grundy > Green

Logan, Campbell, Florent, Jordon, Sheldrick to round out the 23. I'd have Lloyd, Florent fighting for the backup wing/HB spot and Jordon might miss some when there's not a role.

That midfield, and Chad at HF is good to see.

Hope Paton puts pressure on Florent

Been gifted games at times imo and isn’t a defenders arse
He improved when moved up to the wing. So I think it's out of him and Lloyd for the backup wing (to Gulden/Jmac) and HB (to Blakey/Roberts) spot.

With a defence of 3 KPDs, Cunners, Blakey, Roberts it probably leaves a spot for another small/med actual defender, if we're serious about boosting our contested edge, which in the short term should be Fox imo, but Paton might be a medium term solution (hopefully Leidler long term).

Obviously form should dictate but I'm not convinced that Paton's going to be any better than Robbie, if he was left down back to do his job consistently. They can both probably slide onto the 3rd tall when KPDs are off the ground too.

You would think an extra tall down back whether that be TMAC and a forward replacing or just a Snell. Add JMAC on the bench, then could add maybe a Sheldrick and JJ to the bench to round it out?

Thoughts?

Yeah I said in the other thread the worry for me is that if McCartin isn't down back, he has to be replaced in defence, it can't just be Melican & Rampe, much as I like those two. Whether that's a Hamling or a Snell, I'm not sure.

McInerney is definitely in for me - him, Gulden & Lloyd is our best wing rotation I think, and I can't see anyone proving better, unless Lloyd has some major drop-off. But beyond that, I'm not sure I'd want another flanker in unless they're versatile. I think if Warner spends more time outside it mitigates the need for someone like a Campbell or a Jordon or a Florent, unless they can prove themselves useful in another role, like as a small forward or something. But I feel like you and I might've disagreed in the past about whether we have too many outside flanker types in the team or not.

Bit of a weird thought I had the other day, but I kinda like the idea of Florent being a utility for us. He's had match-winning performances in nearly every position he's played in, but the problem for him has always been his consistency. Giving him 2-3 matches in a particular role or position - whether it's half back, wing, inside mid, half forward - and then rotating him around into a different role or position might be a way to maximise his output. Get the best of Florent for a few games, and then switch things up for him before the seemingly-inevitable drop-off occurs.

Just a thought.

I agree with you with respect to too many half back/winger flanker players but JJ i feel like plays a role noone else in the side can do and can also score some goals.

But yes take that 18 plus a bench of Snell, JMAC, Sheldrick and JJ and id be very happy

I wonder as much if the push for Tmac to develop as a forward is to prolong his career?
Definitely not the reason. More likely to get concussed in the forward half when you're presumably playing in front of your opponent.

Hope McCartin isn't forward. I only say that due to the concussion issue.
Having said that, it would really leave us short in KPD with only Melican. That won't get it done against pretty much any team in the competition.

I find the lack of faith in Florent …. disturbing.
For me it's more that we should boost the midfield with Mills, Sheldrick which pushes Chad out to wing/HF a bit more. And on the wing, Jmac is back. Blakey, Roberts probably locks in D50 (Roberts was pretty consistent and should only improve).

So Florent and Lloyd probably battling it out for the remaining backup wing/HB spot.

Of course we may just go with the extra wing/flanker, but think that's wrong direction.
