Been watching all the Best Pictures with the missus, there's some surprisingly good classics.

Some surprisingly woeful winners also. Forrest Gump and Crash at the top of my head.

Crash is truly awful. Wasn't a strong list but still the worst choice.

Yeah, can't say any of the classics have been shockers, which is good, but even something like Rocky feels like a really weird best picture winner.

Thought Crash was over rated, can't believe it won

I like Forrest Gump for what it is, but can see how others would see it as cheesy.
The Jenny story line saved it from that for me.

I always thought American Beauty was over rated. Being different doesn't necessarily mean better.

Life of Emile Zola which we watched recently was particularly poignant with what's happened in the world in recent years. The real stunner was Mutiny on the Bounty - thought that was going to be a boring historical but was actually very funny and easy to watch. The Apartment is a great one as well.

All old black and white flicks.

Of recent films Kramer vs Kramer, The King's Speech, and Birdman were all great.

I'm still filthy about King's Speech beating The Social Network.

Birdman is fantastic.

Rocky as a stand alone movie is really good.
The direction the series went changes how we see the first one.

Agreed, and I love Rocky (all of them except V which is trash) - but it’s certainly not an Oscar winning film for mine.

Braveheart is another for mine, it’s a fun action film at best. Controversial call but Gladiator is a painfully average film that really didn’t deserve to win either.

I haven't seen that, but that's been next on our list for a few weeks now. We've been sidetracked with our binge of Doctor Who.

Gump isn’t the worst movie by any stretch - but in terms of a classic Oscar winning film The Shawshank Redemption is by far the better film. Pulp Fiction should have won however.

Edit: Agreed on American Beauty - however it’s a Spacey masterclass. I miss getting to appreciate his acting prowess. The Insider would have been my pick that year.

Pulp Fiction is another on my list of filling in blank spots.

Rocky II is pretty much Rocky I with a different ending. Rocky III and IV are just excuses to make great montages. Rocky IV is my favourite - honestly not going to spoil too much but there’s a talking robot and Rocky ends the Cold War.

I like that he loses, Iike that he and Micky are both a little grey and are imperfect, I like Pauly is flawed but loyal.
The rest of the series is really enjoyable but is more typical under dog winning and the characters become more black and white. Good v evil and all that.

Oh the boxing plot is good, I like that he loses.
