Season 37, Round 20
We have made it. 118 days of match threads, spam, media, and drama. We opened season 37 back on February 4th and this Monday will be the last game of the home and away season.
Now, to stay in the hunt for the premiership, teams must Qooty to Survive.
A recap of the path to a premiership, so far.
EPISODE DRA
The Dragons have a problem and it all started in the off-season when their star rookie, King Tenz, chose to depart to the Old Boys. Add the departure of Strigoi to the new-look Hawks and you have Dragons supporters across Sweet panicking about the status of their favourite fantasy team. Can Greenery keep the ship floating? Or will in-fighting put the Dragons season in risk.
It was a win against the now ladder leading Royals to kick start the Dragons season but a win-loss-win-loss opening four games that included an eight goal haul from new recruit, and full forward Bonz against the Bombers.
After five rounds, the Dragons were sitting ninth and were threatened with another disappointing season. Back-to-Back wins put their season back on track but drama was brewing yet again in Ljp86's Lair with disagreements around team selection and overthrow attempts being named. big_icky became a yapper this season, but has the yapping got too yappy for Greenery?
The results fell away again. A heart breaking one point victory started the snowball with a month of losses seeing them tumble away from finals again. The Dragons have won just three games since the attempted coup from big_icky, with their season saving win coming yet again from the foot of Bonz.
Although there was turmoil, The Dragons are nearly in finals. They just need a win against the Gumbies to lock away that spot.
EPISODE GUM
The Gumbies were the season 36 premiers after beating the Las Vegas Bears convincingly in a grand final showdown and there were great expectations on them for season 37.
Falconista was set to lead the Gumbies into another season and they were able to retain the majority of their talent while also picking up a rookie and two returnees but they had to wait until round two, after an opening round bye, to see if they could do a better job than the Old Boys of going back-to-back.
It wasn’t the start to the season that the Gumbies needed with just one win in their opening month of games but they knew what they had to work on during training to get into premiership contention. They’ve been in this position before.
The build was slow with a 72-point victory against the Demons and a 14-point victory against the Bombers to begin to drag them up the ladder but losses sprinkled in against the Royals and Warriors made movement hard. That was until they faced the Dragons in round 11.
Barrybran kicked six goals next to Mop ’s four while cats_09 worked hard to get their team across the line by just eleven points, but it wasn’t just about that victory but instead what it kick started with three wins and a draw to start to make them believe the back-to-back dream was on.
The Gumbies have clinched their spot in finals, even though they’ve lost their last two games, and currently sit 6th on the ladder going into the final round. They’re too far out to have the double chance but a home elimination final will help them in their hunt.
Captains, please be aware that the team sheet for your team must be submitted by 11:59 AWST on Thursday.
