A guy got fired from my work on Tuesday, for reasons unrelated to his work output (compulsive liar and a creep among other things). But they ended up going through the work he had done over the 5 weeks he had been employed here and found that he had not actually done any work in the 5 weeks he was here

Those of us who actually had to interact with him had figured it out pretty quickly. We expected his manager who sits next to him to have figured it out or how boss to have figured it out. He was lying about what he was doing, why something hadn't been done yet, or that something had been done or that he was working on it etc. But the team I work in, we are fairly close knit so we don't grass on each other, cover for each other, help each other constantly etc even when that isn't out job, if one of messes up (through actions or work etc), even if it is major, we handle it within the team. So even though we didn't like him and could see what he was or wasn't doing we weren't sure whether to take it to our boss or not.

Me and the guy from Spain or somewhere who took a sickie and they kept paying him for ten years despite never rocking up have regular lunches
I mean I imagine he has lunch too but we both have mastered the artform

You'd be surprised.
I've had to deal with people putting in more effort to hide they are not doing their job, than actually doing their job. If they'd focus that energy on doing their job.... there would not have been a problem.
